Can anyone identify this cactus for me? A friend is doing a biology project, and I'm trying to help her identify this cactus. So far, I am not having any luck.

Don't quote me on this, but I think it's a cactus.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

It is actually kinda hard to ID things without knowledge of the native range. You also don't have anything for scale in the pic, so that makes any ID via photo very difficult too. Finally its hard to tell if the plant is growing oddly because its potted, i.e. is it half dead? Are those two long, flopped over arms growing weird due to light/nutrient/water being different from its native environment?
So, those disclaimers out of the way, this is my guess:
Echinopsis thelegona

You should account for the variables I mention at the top of the post (as much as possible), and check out this cool ID guide, which starts here:
http://cactiguide.com/habitsearch/
Hope that helps!

I have absolutely no idea! The photos were taken by aforementioned friend, and she didn't give an awful lot of background. When she comes back, I'll let you know! Thanks.

Does it have pointy needles?
If so it could be a cactus.
