was reading the manticore's covering fire rule which reads. "place a 3" AOE anywhere completely within this weapon's RNG. the center point must be in this model's LOS, ignoring intervening models. a model entering or ending its activation in the AOE suffers a damage roll with POW equal to the POW of this weapon. the AOE remains in play for one round or until this model is destroyed or removed from play." this read to me as if a model starts or ends its activation in the AOE it would suffer damage however this would mean models just passing through would not suffer damage. can anyone clarify this for me.

I've done things like walk Eiryss up to a group of Mechanithrals to shut-down a warjack with a crossbow shot at long range and then drop with Covering fire right on her head so that the mechanithrals get fried if they try to swing at here. The next turn during upkeep the template goes away so Eiryss never moved while within the covering fire area.

If the mechanithrals surround her, a few crossbow shot can clear a path for her or I just trample a large jack through the middle of the pack of mechanithrals. There's a number of interesting things you can do with covering fire.

Note also that models that begin in a covering fire template and which move out of it will not take a damage roll.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."
