I'm already working on a similar project. Follow the link in my sig to see where I'm taking it, but here's what I know. It all depends on what you want to do as far as Bluetooth. Bluetooth will let you keep your playlist or soundboard or whatever on your phone or other device, and there's no pesky cords to get in the way.

The Phillips Soundshooter series is a good option for only about $20. It's relatively small, very loud for its size and easy to take apart with some tiny screwdrivers. There are bluetooth and non bluetooth versions, as well as a dual version, which leads to the next question.

The other big question is what model are you trying to mount this in? Even a Rhino is a little bit small for the Soundshooter, unless you're going to try to convert it to be a "sonic tank". A land raider would be the ideal size, I think.

I highly suggest that as you plan this project out you follow my project log as I am getting to the portion where I'm going to be rigging up the sounds and testing them soon. A lot of hurdles might be avoided by watching me bungle my way through this mess.

I'm going to rig up my converted stormraven/landraider(think the image) below, and my vendetta. If those projects go well ill try to convert one of my lemon russ vanquishers to mimic the one IG hero from IA 1 second edition. {edit} If you mean the speaker you have on the tau hammerhead, yeah that's still to big, I already have speakers that are smaller than that, I would prefer for my Valkyrie something even smaller. though my mp3 player had issues getting the volume up higher, any advise?

For effects sounds, you could use the kind of circuits you find on musical greeting cards and the like. The sound quality isn't high enough to do music with any kind of high-fidelity, I believe, but by contrast the hardware is much easier to stow inside a model.

They're also pretty damn cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/120s-GREETING-CARD-RECORDABLE-voice-chip-music-sound-/230503778651?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35ab18895b

I did some research into these devices when I was building my Emperor and Golden Throne diorama, because I wanted it to be able to rickroll people. I'd've called it "His Eternal Vigilance", because he's never going to -- you get the idea.

The supply does not get to make the demands.
