Hi Guys,

I'm starting Infinity over the Xmas period and have been taken in by the Combined Army models.

Which starter set is best to get, I'm liking both the normal Starter Set but also like the look of the Shasvastii Expeditionary Force.

I’m brand new to Infinity so still learning everything.

Do you have to focus on one sectorial of an army such as Shasvastii Expeditionary Force or could I have a mix of the full Combined Army units?

Cheers!

If you want to do a Sectorial, that is basically a "focused" force.

To use your Shasvastii Expeditionary Force example then you would be giving up the ability to take things like the Avatar or Morat forces because you are choosing to do a Shasvastii force.
The Shasvastii Expeditionary Force starter is one that is kind of difficult to actually make a playable force from and the SEF suffers from lacking a "boxed set" for a Linkable unit type that allows for you to make an alternative force.

Also worth mentioning that the Morat Aggression Force are getting their starter box soon and we should actually be seeing it this month.

Cheers, so if I get just the general Combined Armies Starter Set can I create an army list that includes some of the Shasvastii units too?

So basically be able to choose and build my list from any of the units on the Combined Army page on the official site?

I collect a Morat force. I tend to gravitate to a more straight forward gameplay style which the Morat Aggression Force has been attributed to a brick to the face style of gameplay.

I would actually wave you away from the generic Combine Army starter set as well. They're older sculpts which, while not terrible, are easily avoided.

An important thing that I forgot from my first post is that the availability of models(and in some cases, their point costs/SWC) is different from "generic" lists to Sectorial lists.

A good example is the Shasvastii Seed Soldiers. In the Shasvastii Expeditionary Force, they are AVA: Total(no limit) but in generic they are AVA: 2.

Do you have a specific list of models you like or is it just "I like the Shasvastii"?
I understand that this is a bit complex and intimidating, but Infinity can definitely come off as too in-depth at times for my own liking.

Basically this is a system where multiple armies/collections is encouraged, if not necessary in some cases. IF I were you, and I really wanted to do a generic force with some Shasvastii stuff too?

I would wait for the Morat Aggression Force starter box and then use that as the start for my force. Morat Vanguard are the bread and butter of generic Combined Army, so you cannot go wrong with that.
Add a few Shasvastii blister packs and then some other items to season and voila you've got yourself a pretty nifty force.

Wow thanks for help guys!

In regards to the models I'm liking the look of there are quite a few from the full Combined Army list;

The Anathematics - Plasma Rifle
Shasvastii Corax Spec-Op - Comes with Weapon Sprue of Multi-Sniper Rifle, Boarding Shotgun, Spitfire
Shasvastii Light Support Unit Haiduks - Multi Sniper Rifle
Shasvastii Tactical Domain Special Wing Noctifers - Missile Launcher
Rasyat - Spitfire
Kurgat - MK12
Skiávoros - Plasma Rifle, Nanopulser
Agent Cadmus-Naish Sheskiin - Nanopulser, DA CCW
Sabotage And Destruction Unit Caliban - Feuerbach
Avatar - Mult HMG
Malignos - Sniper

Plus a couple more....

Though to be fair I could probably see me getting quite a few of these just to paint and marvel at

Got to admit the Infinity models are amazing and really draw you in. Half of the reason I'm wanting to start playing, the other is a lot of people are just starting at my LGS so thought I'd start too.

I hear you on the nice models part, I own at least half dozen starters just because I like the models.

Can you go back and point out exactly which weapon some of those items had?

We can work up a list for you with the Infinity Army Builder and go from there. Be warned though that the Avatar is really expensive, pointswise.

Posted the weapons that were mentioned on the product page of each model on Infinity website.

I know there are quite a few Snipers there so they're not going to be feasible.

Yeah the Avatar I know is a lot of points, it's more for a painting project to see.

Part of me is thinking getting the Shasvastii Starter set now and then when I fancy a second army get the Morat Aggression Force starter box.

I'm really wanting a starter set ordered tonight so it'll arrive before my week off work next week for Christmas!

One thing you need to really be aware of is that AVA: Total units are pretty important. With Infinity there is no real issue with your generic rifle toting model being able to down a big bad hero type.

Going for the Shasvastii Expeditionary Force now, alongside of the Anathematic and the Cadmus Agent would give you a potentially playable force for both generic and Shasvastii. You would not be able to use the Anathematic in the Shasvastii force though.

I hope you do not think I'm trying to shove a specific build at you or anything of that nature. The Shasvastii list is a very bizarre one in that it has a large number of high SWC Lieutenant options and gimmicky builds that can take some getting used to, especially for someone just getting into the game. The Shasvastii list also is not one that really lends itself to someone interested in doing a generic Combined Army force as the units from the Shasvastii list take a fairly significant hit to their AVA numbers when going from Sectorial to generic.

The main reason I was encouraging waiting on the Morat Aggression Force set is that the Morat Vanguard Infantry are the models which would end up being your 'best bet' as low point cost high AVA rifle toting order generators.

Not at all mate I'd rather get some honest opinion rather than jumping in and being out of my depth straight away!

I think the Morat Aggression Force Set, when it comes out is a definite purchase right away.

I might just get the Shasvastii Expeditionary Force ordered tonight and then it'll give me something to paint up over xmas with no real end goal of making an army with them at the moment and then make a concetrated army when the new set launches.

Thanks for all the help!

Tell me about it. The reason I have Tohaa right now is I noticed that with the starter (of which I like most of the models), and both of the Gao Raels and Gao Tarsos, I could make a nifty 300pt force. Now I'm looking as Shasvastii as well, but they're a bit harder to figure out.

So ordered the Shasvastii box, arrived this morning and the models look so nice.

Looking forward to getting them built and painted next week.
