They aren;t in the FAQs its in the codex. We aren't your personal rule book substitute. You can't just ask us for rules.

Go read the codex.

on the forum. Obviously

Read your codex. The YMDC sub-forum is not for rules digging.

lol, apparently it is pretty handy for being a jerk though. Seriously?

Can't just be like "haha noob, thread moved" and get over it?

Seems like the most fun I have with this stupid game is reading the bloody books. I mean, thanks online community of wargamers. So I asked a silly question. I kind of got that from the first reply.

Feel free to pile on more scorn though, it's not like we want any new players anyways right?

AND for the record, I was asking because someone was trying to tell me they unlocked an elite as troops with a Demon Prince. Often I'll lead with a question, it's kind of a conversation thing though I guess hey? Not really the sort of thing that comes across on a forum.

I completely forgot about this thread cuz I did go do some reading and answered my own question, and yes, saw the futility of asking in the first place. Though it is nice to see you guys helping the Mods by being so asinine.

The problem is that your question doesn't really fit into ANY of the threads. Maybe 40k general discussion...but they have the same rules YMDC does: the forum isn't a replacement for the rulebook.
There are a variety of reasons you'd post in YMDC, the most common of which is that you had/have a problem understanding a particular rule or rules-interaction. Perhaps it was sparked by an argument in a game you played, and you want to get it resolved so next time the same argument doesn't erupt.
But you have to at least have read the pertinent rule(s) in order to not understand them. Your question had nothing to do with rules, and isn't the type of question that belongs on YMDC.
By asking for someone to give you 40k rules that you do not have access to, you are breaking the explicit forum tenants, which can be found stickied at the top of YMDC. (Did I spell "stickied" correctly?)

AND for the record, I was asking because someone was trying to tell me they unlocked an elite as troops with a Demon Prince.

If you had opened your post by saying something like, "A friend told me you can make Thousand Sons a Troop choice by taking a Tzeentch DP, but I wasn't sure that was true," then the forum users might not have been quite as blunt/brunt.
But you still would've (should've) gotten the answer, "Ask to see your friend's Chaos Marine codex. The answer lies within."
OR even better you could've said, "A friend told me you can make Thousand Sons a Troop choice by taking a Tzeentch DP, but when I read his codex I didn't see that rule anywhere. Is he right?"
THAT question would've shown that you did your homework, and wanted to make sure that you're on target and missed nothing. THEN someone would've responded, "Nope, your friend was wrong, DPs don't unlock troops. That's a job for other HQs."
And then everyone would've been happy.

OP - Your initial post does not specify whether you are a Chaos player looking to circumvent not having a book, or someone who might be getting hosed by a Chaos player looking for confirmation or denial of what you've been told. The first is an unacceptable use of the forums, and is tragically also a daily occurrence, which is why you see so much negativity towards it. In the defense of at least some people, the majority of people seem to feel that an answer of "it's in your codex" isn't rude. More clarity in the initial post will help to alleviate this problem in the future. If you can't find the appropriate reference in a book you own, it helps to mention that. (You will probably get someone who will tell you the page number without quoting specific text, in order to keep on the good side of the powers that be. It might seem stand-offish at first, but they are trying to cover their own butts.) If your question is about an army you don't play, it also helps to mention THAT, so people don't think you're trying to use the forums as a substitute for a rulebook.

That being said, there's no reason for us all to get up in arms. Alpharius is totally correct. Lest we forget:
Rule 1 wrote:This seems obvious, however many folks can sometimes forget that common courtesy goes a long way to lending respect to both you and your opinions. Just because you don't see the other users' faces doesn't mean they don't have feelings and won't be hurt by rude comments or offensive images. When you see something that you find silly, rude or insulting first assume that perhaps there is more to it than you initially thought. Look at it again, keeping in mind that tone and inflection is difficult to convey in a visual format. It may be that the person is attempting a joke or is exaggerating on purpose. It is best to politely request clarification before accusing someone being ignorant, a liar, or worse.
