I have just recently got back into 40k (not played since 4th ed). At the moment I'm playing a lot against a nid player and I keep getting beaten...badly. He plays his nids very well, if not a bit beardy, and we always have fun, but I would like to win every once in a while. I have tried all manner of different lists, but he always has a counter to it. He often take a winged Hive Tyrant with two twin linked death splitters with brainleech worms (that's assault 12 with re-rolls!he has started playing a full Carnifex brood with the same get up recently as well) the hive tyrant is often enough to finish of my long fangs in one turn(as a Maine player I seem to fail more armour saves than I make) then it flys off and takes out some grey hunters. If I take a lot of terminators they either get bogged down with hormagents or jumped on by a mawlok, who's deep strike special attack is good at killing terminators. Last my armoured support gets demolished by a 30 strong, out flanking hormagent blob squad. I usually wipe it out with a sky claws assault, but not before it takes out a whirlwind or something.
Any advice or army lists that anyone finds works well against nids would b good. Thanks.

If you are tailoring your list specificly on Tyranids, focus on taking the synapse creatures out. With the synapse dead, all his gribblies lose fearless and are easy to break with their Ld 6.
As most synapse is carried by MC's, try to bring enough weapons to take out these MC's. Almost all Tyranid MC's have a 3+ save so anything with AP3 is useful. For example, Missile Launchers are a pretty cheap way to chip away a lot of Wounds from a MC.
Also, remember to focus fire one MC down at a time. It's no good to have reduced two or three MC's down to a few wounds when you could've killed one. If you take down a Tervigon (don't know if your opponent runs them) the backlash will kill a lot of Termagaunts.
Perhaps you can give us a run down of your list and your opponent's list?

This cannot be said enough take out the synapse creatures. Even the strongest nid army falls apart without em.
Go for double squads of maxed out long fangs with all missiles good for the swarms of gribblies with the blast template and like Hansisaf said AP3 to chip down MC's.
Also as a SW player I love the skyclaws but they can be impractical with their lower WS/BS and you need someone to babysit them all game. If you've got the points/models try some thunderwolf calvary, also rune priests are your best friend for taking out carnifexs you could take a whole brood in one shot if you can line it up right.
As for the flyrant unfortunately SW's lack of anti-air make him hard to hit but a ADL with the gun would help. otherwise keep making him take grounding checks and hope you can charge.

As a veteran bug player...I am not worried about losing synapse.
Almost never happens...If you see that he's taken a very synapse light list...this might be viable...but most opponents will have synapse foaming out of their ears.
Never drop a pod on bugs unless its got 2 flamers...and even then, those dudes are probably dead.
Jaws is a solid option for now...going to nuke some fexes/tervigons...and make sure you take that 4+ deny powers gear.
You definitely need 2 long fang squads...missiles are underrated right now.
Also, don't try killing a tervigon unless you have a dedicated assault unit that can get there...thunderwolves or grimnar and the gang.

I'm not sold on jaws, its needs an initiative test and most the things I want to nuke have fairly high initiative. Every time I take it I nuke a few hormagants and that's about it. That said I ain't used it against any fexes who I have just noticed has initiative 1.
His list usually has a winged hive tyrant, a mawloc, a tervigon, some raveners and 2 30 strong hormagant squads. But varies a bit, some times he will bring some fexes and no raveners(I thing a prefer raveners,I can kill them!haha).
My core list will have 2-3 grey hunters units, usually with a plasma gun or two thrown in, a wolf lord in terminator armour with a pair of wolf claws, a unit of wolf guard in terminator armour 2 with wolf claws and two with thunder hammers and storm shields, a long fang you it with 2 heavy bolters, a missile launcher, and usually a plasma cannon or lascannon. Then depending on points I'll take a land raider, a venerable dread, a rune priest with some wolf guard body guard(one with a cyclone missile launcher), some scout snipers with a missile launcher and last of all I'll have some sky claws being baby sat by a wolf priest. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yea, and thanks for the advice

Things Jaws are good for: Tervigons, Mawlocs, Cranifexes, and Tyrannofexes.
Don't use it on Tyrants, Trygons and most any unit on a 40mm or smaller. Automatically Appended Next Post: All right... well fangs are best with full missiles...especially against TMCs as they're almost exclusively T6 3+...Plasma is fantastic as are flamers.
Personally I think you should go search for loganwing lists and add the core of it to your army.
Otherwise get the saga where you reroll wounds against T5+ on your character.
Saga of the bear might be nice against fexes too.
Also, try playing the Venerable as Bjorn and see where that takes you. He's fantastic for alive or dead on the field. Automatically Appended Next Post: (Bjorn is for my personal flavor, not all that competative.)
