hi all,
my main army is dark angels, and i am thinking about making 1 of the successor chapters either angels of redemption or angels of absolution, to join my dark angels army.
anyway i was wondering if i was to play would i need the hq plus 2 troop choices to be able to use them or can i just paint a few units/tanks/dreadnoughts what ever and play them with the dark angels? plus if it does have to be a new army do they have the deathwing, ravenwing or do they have there own terminators and bike squads?

any info on this would be great thanks

You can paint your models however you like. It is completely irrelevant how they are painted.

It doesn't matter if you are representing a successor chapter, a "parent" chapter or a chapter you have made up yourself.
You can paint various parts of your army in various colour schemes to represent a "crusade" of Dark Angels and their successor chapters coming together to hunt the Fallen.

It is all up to you. Just make sure your opponent is completely clear on what you are fielding. A simple; "this army is made using the Dark Angels codex" is enough.

I could make up a chapter called the "Pink Unicorns" and, if I was using the Dark Angels codex, I would have access to Deathwing and Ravenwing.

I was running Dark Angels with Consecrators for a while as my primary army, both out of the same Codex and in the same FoC. I thought it was a GREAT concept as it allowed me to field a few units of Heresy Era models. The idea whas that I'd magnetize the shoulder pads of the Consecrators so they could swith to Heresy Dark Angels Legion....but that never came to fruition.

The only time you'd want to use them as allies with regular HQ etc. is if you're playing them out of another Marines codex as full allies.

Personally, though, I'd be sure to make a cool HQ or at least veteran sergeant to represent whoever's in charge of the successor group even if they're not officially another army.

As said, if you are using a successor chapter alongside your normal one, and you are using the same codex for both, there is no reason to build your army any way other than the normal way. There isn't anything different about your "allied" detachment other than their color scheme and your personal fluff.

Successor chapters, when they don't have any unique rules from the parent Chapter, are just an excuse to exercise your creativity.

Rules-wise, if you are playing a Dark Angel successor who very closely follows the Unforgiven tenets rather than the Codex Astartes, you are supposed to mix the chapters in, because Dark Angels cannot ally themselves.

Successors who share the same doctrines as their parent chapters are "similar enough that they can be considered the same army" according to GW.

If a DA supplement comes out, you can then make an allied list with Dark Angels and their successor, or if the successor is more similar to a normal chapter you can use them as allies with the Codex: Space Marines rules.

Hail the Emperor.
