I am considering making a 1500pt Blood Angels list and was wondering if a semi competitive list could be made from the following?

Assault squads/Vanguards/ Sanguinary Guard
Sternguard in drop pod
Dreadnoughts in drop pods
Death Company either land raider or drop pod
Tacticals in drop pods
Baal predators for outflanking (can they still do that) with flamestorms

HQ wise probably commanders, chaplains or librarians.

Not really into any of the special characters, not even the uber beatstick Mephiston.

BA is decent by itself, but better as an allied detachment. The only reason you would make an BA army is for -1 dice on DS and Scoring jump units, and that most, if not all your tanks are Fast, and you have access to hand flamers/Infernus pistols. I used to play BA, then switched over to Vanilla SM, cuz the point difference is really noticeable in small-medium size games. Only really viable i have seen BA played is alot of Death Company, and DC dreads (NCSMW is sweet) and their libby's can choose psychic powers (5th ed ftw), then DS some Assault squads w/ infernus pistols for some tank popping. You also have the only units in game that can still assault out of deep strike (vanguard veterans) untill BA gets a digital update and they change the wording.

There are still a few semi-viable ways to play BA. You'll never get to a top table at an event with more than 50 players, but you can compete in small RTTs with certain builds.

A few notes:

You have the best AT/AA Stormraven variant.

You have fast transports that are discounted. So, you can go old school MSU with lots of cheap scoring units in free or nearly free transports, and because they're fast, you can reserve them and zoom onto the board 24" in a turn.

Outflanking Baal's with the all-flame loadout are still good.

I would discourage you from going heavy death co. Armies like Tau and Eldar will whittle down a 30-man DC blob to almost if not nothing in 1-2 shooting phases. They die just like marines.

Sternguard in Drop Pods are good in any codex, as are your AWESOME AV13 dreadnoughts. However, if you're going to employ these, I would take many or none. Either go for an alpha strike army or employ a different build.

Mephiston is still useful.

Corbulo is still useful.

Don't discount the use of allies.

In most lists a core of 2x 10 Assault Marines and a Librarian with Jump Pack is good. For Librarian take Shield of Sanguinius (note that this played on enemy's turn so you kinda get lvl2 libby for "free", even tough we pay a lot for it ) and Fear of Darkness, Unleash Rage or The Sanguine Sword.

Outflanking Baal Predators are golden, always use them.

Third good element would be Sternguard in a Drop Pod with Corbulo. Corbulo will tank most of the shots and turn the suicide squad into game-long threat.

Sanguinary Guard/DC will be painful in CC but it's rare they ever make it there. With Sang Guard, a Priest will do miracles.

Speaking of which, I don't see priests in your list. You should get one or two, they are important part in a succesful BA army.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I also meant to include Storm ravens and sanguinary priests on that list.

Could somebody knock up a rough 1500pt list for me?

I am not particularly interested in including special characters, even if they do make the army better.

I am a casual gamer and don't play in tournaments.

Which unit do you intend to ride in the storm raven as I gather all the assault marines have jump packs?

Also that seems like a lot of power axes. I am a bit concerned about all the unwieldy weapons, especially on characters that can be challenged and have no invuln saves.

Thanks for the ideas though. I think if I go ahead a jump libby and a core of assault marines will be a must.

Well, the decision between PS and PA is yours alone to make. I simply prefer the Axe more.

And Storm Raven doesn't need to have any passenngers. It works well as a gunship. If you intend to assault from there, the Raven must go on Hover more and will be shot quickly. If you drop from there, you might as well Deep Strike.
