I'm trying to put the final touches on my Necron army and wanted to get opinions about the Annihilation Barge. Is it worth the time to build and paint and is it overly useful in games?

I fear it every time my buddy runs one. As long as you can set it up with a nice LOS you can drop str10 ap1 blasts left right and centre plus its got a range of 72" so I run from cover to cover hoping for the best.

wait sorry i was thinking doomsday ark. The annihilation barge is pretty decent though with the tesla set up give you extra hits on 6's plus a chance to hit units within 6" with that arc special rule.

Each annihilation barge gives you an average of 4.88 st7 hits off only 4 shots. That is not including the arc rule. Also when it snap fires its accuracy only reduces marginally so it is an excellent anti flyer too. You then also have its secondary gun which I usually have as a gauss cannon. Run in this way, it can deal with horde, tanks, flyer and meq. It is useless against av14... but everything else in your army will eat av14 for breakfast. To top this off, it is a skimmer so has a jink save if you move it, has av13 until you score a pen against it and only costs 90pts. YES its worth it! I own 5... wish I had 6.

Three. That's the magic number. It gives such a useful wait if fire. Av13. Mobile. Jinn save. And only ninety points. It's much easier to use than a scythe (never flies off, there turn one, can turn 360 etc). Great for supporting ground squads and killing stuff.

One of the better units in the codex, you should never leave home without one.

Double force org, take 6, laugh your ass off that you have 1460 points left over to make a stupid overpowered list.

Yeah you should always have 3. The only exception is if you're running double force or in which case you'll want 6. Stupid good for its points. VERY close with the Wave Serpent as the most efficient tank in the game. For instance it gets more S7 hits on a flyer per point than a Hydra Flakk tank which is a dedicated AA platform. Plus it puts on average 1 S6 hit a turn on a flyer too and against ground targets its even better. If it was 120 points it would still be an auto include. At 90 points it is ludicrous!

Annihilation Barges are absolutely worth it. Never go out without two or three, unless you plan to field Doom Scythes.
They are very cost effective and have a decent damage output. You hardly get more bang for your bucks.

A better question is whether you should build your second without the pilots, to give a bit of variation?

As a long time necron player the A-barge is without a doubt the best heavy support option assuming your goal is to have a list that isn't flyer spam. The 9 flyer list is the most competitive non forgeworld list I have seen but the downside is it's not very fun to play in my opinion, the coms relay with scarabs allows you to hide out of line of sight and then roll 2+ for all your reserves and arrive to overwhelm any AAA. But I digress, the A-barge is consistently the best 90 points I can spend, I always bring 3 giving me significant AAA capability as well as light vehicle killer. It also serves as a phenomenal wound generator vs regular inf and monstrous creatures. Other options I have found success with is doomsday archs, but only when on skysheild(and you're sure you won't see many flyers) and if you're including forgeworld sentry pylons can be good if you have a tournament that will allow them to be fielded rules as written. When I say that I mean they allow the death ray to be fired without line of sight restriction, which is how the weapon is said to fire. The gauss exterminator option is also nice for anti flyer spam, albeit much more expensive points wise than an A-barge.

Also when you take it do yourself a favor and do not take the gauss cannon, all tesla all day. Better for snap shooting on the move, S6 gives you enough to glance on 6 vs armor 12 which is the best most flyers will have to offer.

This, this a thousand times this oh and QTF. As the Tesla is also great against FMC. Whilst the Gauss Cannon is IMHO the better gun the Tesla Cannon suits the A Barge role much better and is the obvious choice.

After all of that - played a list today with three doom scythes instead. The results were acceptable.
