I remember a while escalation and stronghold assault as being optional supplements. I took that as meaning that you had the choice of using them and the special rules within them or not.
When I look at them not, they are listed as supplements but the word optional is no longer there. does ean that they are not optinal but instead the new mandated rules to play by?

All supplements are automatically optional, including codexes.
No-one can force you to play against their BA, GK or whatever. If you are doing so, it's because you agreed to do so.
No-one, outside of a particularly rough FLGS, will hold a gun to your head and demand that they be allowed to bring a Baneblade to a regular game.
If your opponents and you want to play with the Escalation rules, do. If not that's cool too.
Tournaments are another matter- check with the TO

I think that that would no longer qualify for the F in FLGS.

Just play how you like. It doesn't matter if your "homeruling" Escalation out or if everyone is shoe-horning an optional supplement into the game - just play with the titans if you like them and without if you don't.

Well I think it would be F(irearmed) FLGS.
It is as optional as Tau and Space Marines. Which is to say as optional as you and your friends or TO make it.
After all, only I am allowed the use of cattle prods to enforce the game as I want

What is it with the deluge of threads about what's official, whether GW says what about who and when and if it's optional or if it's mandated by the Glorious People's Committee to the Enjoyment of Workers?
Are people really that unable to enjoy their hobby without guidance of the one true path?

Some people play pickup games, and in that situation there's an unwritten rule that you don't insist on veto power over your opponent's list as long as everything is legal according to the standard rules of the game. So whether Escalation is official and part of the standard game or not is the difference between the default situation being "no titans" and having to be TFG and tell your opponent what they're allowed to bring.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

too dam true
Its this issue which is hacking me off big time. The minute you see that the 'person' has brought the big guns and you haven't etc in my humble view depending on what the big unit is its either worth it, or just a waste of my time. It why my whole outlook changed after the one game, it made me 'flip' in one sense.
Its annoying but personally form now on if it gets sprung on me again, the flat answer will be 'no' . I'll get abuse there is no doubt about that but the rub is i'll get a match of warmachine in no time with far less agro, their loss not mine
remember if they are offended when you say no, personally its their problem not yours
