Hello all, I am new to the game. I have played with two games at my local hobby store. I picked up the space wolves codex and have the rule book. I love the back ground story of them. I do not like the yellow color on the shoulders. so I think I am going to make my own space wolves chapter.
Here is the color lay out that I want to use.
I hope it will still look like space wolves. most of the models will not have helmets. I plane on making them look more wolfy then most of other space wolves army's.

Firstly, welcome to both the hobby and Dakka!
Your colours look cool and could work as a wolfy theme I think.
Altough robes of any kind aren't their cup of tea.
But how does this relate to army lists? Threads like this would do better in General Discussion.

The codex has a lot of official variants of shoulder colors you can use besides yellow. AFAIK there is white, gray, black, and red. Most people don't do the split colors on the armor, but it is personal preference. I personally went medium/dark grey armor drybrushed with light grey and red shoulder pads which I feel fits them better thematically than the light blue and yellow..

For a space wuff army these things are a good idea:
1) Does your local game store play apoc, escalation, or any other forgeworld rubbish.
2) What units do you like, want to play with.
3) Whats you budget?
4) How many points are you looking for?
5) Did you want allies?
Also side notes your SW chapter looks great (though i don't like models without helmets (they get shot in the face).
After these 5 questions are answered I and my fellow dakkanaughts will be able to help you to our fullest.

I personally went with a part of the chapter that had the red wolf breathing fire. Don't have my codex in front of me at the moment.
Things I would look at on here is previously posted Space Wolf Armies. That's going to give you a better idea of point cost and general monitory cost.
I don't believe them to be a heavy number of models to run a good army, sigh, unlike my Orks.

fist I want to thank every one who has helped me out. I do have answers to all of your questions
1) Does your local game store play apoc, escalation, or any other forgeworld rubbish.
Not that I know of. I have only played there about 3 times. There is only 5 or so people that play and I will be playing just for fun.
2) What units do you like, want to play with.
I like the loan wolf and r.p
3) Whats you budget?
about 200 but it might go over
4) How many points are you looking for?
1500
5) Did you want allies?
no I don't mind if I have allies
I want to make my list first before I go and buy my army. so here is what I have thought up. any ideas that you can think of or comments that you can make to make it a better one that would be great. I love the L.W. and R.P.
HQ - 170
R.P. with Living Lightning and jaws of W.W.
runic armor
elites
wolf scout QT 10 --170
1 flamer
5 snipers
(question about how they come into battle do I start with them or are they a reserved troop that comes in latter ?)
L.W. --- 105
with two wolves
T.A. , Chain sword, and storm shield.
3 thunderwolf cavalry all with storm shield -- 240
1244
Troops
3 sets of 10 grey hunters -- 213 * 3 = 639
each set has two meltaguns, and one standard
they also have one wolf guard pack leader with storm shield
9 blood claws with drop pod -- 175
with flamer, meltagun
Total points are 1499

Drop the flamer from the scouts, you'll never use it. A heavy bolter would be better for the same points, but the best would be a missile launcher. That way the scouts can camp out 36" away and use all their weapons. The Lone wolf could work, but it entirely depends on the army you go up against. If all he has is a SS, he is going to get ignored. Thunderwolves sound and look cool, but they tend to be bullet magnets. So unless you have a charge army that can keep up, they will draw all the dakka and get blow away by turn 2 before the rest of the army can charge. The Grey hunters need to have some sort of transport or they will be shot to pieces before they get into range. Get rid of the blood claws entirely, they are completely useless since they cant charge from deepstrike. Switch them out for grey hunters with Melta. What I think you should look at is getting a box of Devastators. Long Fangs and Rune Priests are the best units the Space Wolves have right now. For 140 points you can have 5 missile launchers that are extremely flexible ( Str 8 Ap 3 rocket or Str 6 Ap 5 Blast and if you want you can fire are two different targets with the same unit). With some small tweaks you could have a great 1500 point army.

Yes I would second the suggestion towards getting transports for your guys.
Also while I fully advocate playing with what units you like, and to not just take cookie cutter lists: the structure behind most competitive sw lists is a solid core the grey hunters, backed up by (Usually ml wielding) long fangs and rune priests with jaws

why would I but devastators when they have a box of lang fangs? and can I have more then one rune priest in one game. like make them a commander of gray hunters ? or long fangs

You can have more than one RP, they just cant have the exact same powers or weapons. So if you have a RP with LL and Jotww, and another two BRB powers that would be legal.

Scouts can come in from reserve or start on the table - your choice.
I agree with a lot of what Eisensapper wrote... Though I'd add...
Rune Priests can benefit from two shooty powers (Jaws can be very useful or of no use at all. Living Lightning is always pretty good), but that's situational. It is better to pick one shooty power and one blessing (usually going to be Storm Caller for the cover save).
I'm not wild about using Scouts at all (though, admittedly, the army I play most is Eldar... I'm sure there are others against whom they're more effective). As far as I know, they're the only unit which can enter from your opponent's edge, and you have a 4 in 6 chance of that happening - which is also re-rollable. Not great armor, though, so they can be hard to keep alive. If you're making them snipers, then you'll probably want to keep them on the board to begin with, and likely Infiltrate with them.
I'm not sold on Lone Wolves at all, though they can also be situationally spectacular. Against heavy armor and Monstrous Creatures, they can be great (or at least great tar pits), but they are pretty slow and reasonably easy to avoid, if your enemy wants to. Plus, in kill point games, your enemy gets a free kill point simply by avoiding your Lone Wolf.
I do love Thunderwolf Cavalry, but Eisensapper makes a good point. Against shooty enemies, they're going to get focused on and cut up. Options: 1.) a Wolf Lord in Runic Armor on a Thunderwolf will at least give you 2+ armor, which the rest of the unit lacks. And you can "Look Out, Sir!' him if need be. 2.) Cover - if you've got terrain, use it. TWC can move pretty quickly, but when you've got more than 20" to your nearest enemy, they're still going to get at least one round of shooting at you. If there's terrain that will block line of sight, get them behind it. 3.) (or perhaps 2a) Fenrisian Wolves - FW are cheap (8 points), and you can put in 15 of them (120 points, or 128 if you want to use a Cyberwolf). Keep them ahead of the TWC, and they're intervening models, giving cover to the TWC. Keep them within 12" of the TWC, and they can reroll their (admittedly poor) Leadership. Upgrade one to Cyberwolf, and you've also improved that Leadership. Also, giving every TWC a Storm Shield isn't really worth the points. In a three-man unit, 2 SS or even 1 is reasonable. 1 SS per 2 TWC, 1 for every three, or even 1 for every 4 are all reasonably choices.
Grey Hunters should use a Drop Pod or a Rhino (I favor DPs, but it's another situational thing).
No Blood Claws.
Devastators (made into Long Fangs) are the backbone of most SW armies. You can keep your Rune Priest back with them to buff them with Divination Powers (or Storm Caller, and then using Living Lightning when you want to shoot), or he can be with one of your Troop units, since they've got one of the best Psyker blocking powers in the game.
Something else to think about is a Land Speeder squadron... It doesn't seem like a lot of SW players use them (I don't actually have any, though I'm thinking about it). If you've got a unit of Long Fangs in your back field, a unit of snipers in midfield, a couple units of Grey Hunters Drop Podding in, a unit of TWC and a unit of FW charging up the midfield, and a squad of Land Speeders coming in on their backfield (or the midfield, or your backfield, as needed)... that's a pretty decent way to spend 1500 points. Also, Drop Pods allow you to bring in one half of them on your first turn - rounding up. Meaning if you've got 2 Pods full of GHs and then dedicate one DP to the Long Fangs (which they don't have to use), the Grey Hunters come in round one and the Long Fangs' empty DP can come in on turn 2. (This also works well with 3 units of GHs and 2 LF units with empty Pods).

updated list.
Thank you for all your help guys and girls!
I thought about what you said on the cost of a 1500 army. I am not getting one for 200 lol unless I find a crazy deal on ebay.
so with that said I put together a 750 point army that I can use at my local game store and if I want to make a bigger one then there is a person there that plays space marines so I can proxy some stuff in.
Here is the list.
HQ
R.P. with LL --100
will stay in back with the long fangs
Troops
2 sets full set of 10 GH in DP with meltaguns -- 195
Elits
LW with two wolf claws --65
Fenrisian wolf pack
I have 4 with one cyberwolf ---
(plain on putting them in front of the LW)
5 Long Fangs all have missile launchers -- 140
1 long fang captain.
total points -743
I want to have the most fun with this list. I know that the wolves are going to die very fast but that si what they are meant to do. I think I can get this list for around the price I want. I am going to look at pricing it out today.

I like it, only thing id change is a SS on the lone wolf rather then double claws.
Ps. Ebay seems to sell a lot of space marines, which could be converted into SWs with a little bit of effort .

Decent list for 750, and you may well be able to do that for under 200. I agree that a Storm Shield would be a better build on your Lone Wolf than a second Wolf Claw.

If I were you I wouldnt buy the Fenrisian wolf pack.
With a 6+ armor and no ranged attacks, they will get chewed up on turn one and/or two as they charge ahead of everyone. Even against an Imperial guard squad they will have to run through 27 shots of lasgun fire before they hit. If you lose more than two wolves that's a leadership check with a 59% chance of failing and having to run away.
I think you should get:
Rune Priest
Battle Force
2 GH units
1 Drop Pod
5 Scouts (Proxy the bolters for sniper rifles)
Devastators
Then get a box of 10 space wolves.
It's a little over your budget, but you'll end up winning more games, then if you had the Fenrisians.

To be fair, the Cyberwolf bumps the unit's leadership to 6... Saga of the Wolfkin makes all your Fenrisian Wolves to I5 Ld7, but Rune Priests can't use it... FW are best taken with Thunderwolf Cavalry, though - giving a cover save to the cavalry, taking the overwatch, and getting a morale reroll if they're within 12" of TWC. In this case, they basically are giving cover saves or ablative armor to the Lone Wolf, so not a bad idea. He's got a long slog across the field.
I'm never entirely sure, though, if people want a fluffy list or a competitive list... also, your enemy's list should be taken into account when planning... a good list against Orks won't necessarily be a good list against Eldar. Though Eisensapper's purchase list is an excellent small army and an excellent core for a larger army that you can build along the way.

Here is what I have so fare. This is my first time ever painting some thing this small. I am looking for ways I can push the model. I like how it looks. I am going to add a wash over lay to make it pop. It will not win any painting contest but I like how it is turning out for my first time.
Still do not now what colors the shoulder pads are going to be. I am not going to be using the normal yellow.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Its looking good, definitely a wash on it though to get some depth on the white, then thin layers of grey/ white up to a nice white finish
Maybe black would be good, not sure if devlan mud or agrax earthshade would make it more of a bone colour like the deathwing.
Blue might make it too close to a novamarine or something.
But a solid start

Bahahaha, unless you would have said something I would never have guessed about the middle guy!
Also when doing the wash you can do what locals around my parts call a split wash, hit the blue with a light/dark blue wash mixed with maybe a little nuln oil (blackish) and for the white use a bit of ogre flesh wash (I don't remember the new version of it) and you should be fine running that plain, but remember you can always highlight afterwards.

Thanks
I never noticed the hand on the middle guy either
I do my guys fenris grey or fang as its now called, then washed down with nuln oil and drybrushed with fenris grey/ fang to pick out all the details leaving the black to create a shadow. Its a lazy method but because the Space Wolves have so much texture it works really well and you get a nice look in just a few minutes
You could do the same with yours too, just make sure to mask off really well down the middle to stop the colours bleeding into each other.
I would go with just 1 wash on the whole model as it will help tie all the colours together, maybe a dark brown like agrax earthshade would work.
Like I said you are off to a really good start, nice and distinctive

i am going paint one and see if i like it.
so i have decided to paint them like this
