As the title says, I'm fanatical about my 40k. Or at least I used to be. For many years, playing 40k was my all-time favourite hobby and don't get me wrong, I still really like it... But it just doesn't seem as fun anymore. I don't know if it's the new rules sets (I started with early 3rd ed), the attitude of some of the players I come across or some of the new Codexes but the only thing that keeps me into it now is the fluff. And fluff doesn't always translate well into the game.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm pretty well-versed in fantasy fluff (or at least I was until Valten died) and I've had an army or two and played a bit of fantasy (though always under 1000 points and only in 6th edition) but I definitely feel I've never given it a 'real go'. I mean, the last army I looked at collecting (read:LAST) was a Middenheim siege army, complete with Teutogen Guard.

So do any of the old-fantasy-farts feel the same way about their game system as this 40k-fart does about 40k? Are you experiencing the 'not having as much fun' feeling like I am or are tired by the 'X sucks - don't use it, Y is way too OP you're a jerk for using it' attitude? From what I have read and seen from watching games, fantasy seems to be better balanced and there just seems to be a whole lot less whinging. Or have I just not been exposed to it yet?

What I'm basically asking is: is the grass truly greener on the battlefields of WHFB and thus worth a switch?

I'm not a vet that can really answer your question, but as someone who is building a Vampire Counts army and looking to start playing fantasy, here is my take.

Sometimes we suffer from "system fatigue". If you've been play 40k since 3rd edition, you may just need some variety. That's why people play multiple systems. I would say to go ahead and add a fantasy army and rotate it in to your playing days, and you will probably find that when you play 40k you will enjoy it more than you have been.

So you don't have to switch completely, just add it in to "spice" things up.

I've been playing 40k since 2nd ed. Not so much the "x-sucks don't use it" part, but definitely not as much fun as it used to be. A lot of it for me is piles and piles of quick releases, supplements, add-ons, dataslates, etc. makes it impossible to be at least passingly familiar with all the armies. I used to buy every codex for the read, background, and to at least be familiar. I haven't bought more than 2 6th ed codexes yet, and have skipped on some for armies that I do play.

That being said, I find that any game gets stale if you don't like the gaming group or the environment. The guys I play with have the same laid-back approach to gaming, so we don't see as much of the extreme stuff that you read about on the internet (actually, none of it).

I have two Fantasy armies that I use every now and then. I enjoy the game, but again, none of us are really using hordes, steadfast units, obliterating spells, etc. We're playing with lists we used in prior editions, and enjoying the more relaxed movement rules, etc. Still fun games.

I've actually been getting more and more into historicals (of several stripes), and enjoying that immensely, even just the research and painting element.

There's definitely significantly less whinging in WHFB than in 40k, coming from someone who's been playing at least 7 years in both systems, and generally knows his stuff (being arrogant for the purposes of this post, k?)

Don't get me wrong, Fantasy has it's problems, but they're certainly not at the scale or number of the 40k ones and in most cases certain "overpowered things" are easily countered. For example, there's pretty much no disadvantage to taking that 2++ rerollable Daemon unit in 40k, but such a massive deathstar in fantasy is vulnerable to killer spells, which would do as much damage as it would to any other unit, 2++ rerollable or not. Yeah, you wasted tons of points there. And the bad things about Fantasy tend to be pretty easily fixed by house rules.

So, yeah, I think the grass is greener here, but you won't know until you try it. Fantasy's not for everyone, but it undoubtedly has its advantages over 40k.

hello, my name is nutty, I'm a long time 40k player and short time fantasy player (read as: support group therapy)

on a serious note, I was playing 40k from 3d too, my FLG was pretty split for a long time between the fantasy players and the 40k players, about two years ago we all had a sit down and decided we wanted to bridge the gap, with the majoruyt of the players being 40k and a large portion interested in fantasy but not sure where to start we made the plunge to fantasy with a random draw of armies and too it from there to collect build and play leading up to a tournament.

I pulled WoC and have not regretted playing fantasy since, I enjoy both systems, my preferance reamins with 40k becasue I like my space marines, but I do enjoy fantasy.

the best bit I think you can take from this, is that you will join now, not in the past where most of the old rules and whatnot will not effect you becasue you didn't know them.

this actualy led to me knocking heads with one of the longer standing WHFB players as they had all 'just assumed it was this way' from the older rules and haddn't bothered to read in depth as they were all old hats at the game and had not had to read the book in as much detail. (we did get it sorted out in the end though)

pick it up, give it a chance and take your time. when you go back to 40k you'll have a couple of brain fart moments (which is actually a good thing as it will re-afirm current ruleset over past ruleset) and it makes both systems much more enjoyable to play

More people play 40k , so that means more vocal minority spouting on the forums!

@stewy, cruentus and nutty_nutter: splitting my time between fantasy and 40k may increase my enjoyment of both systems and definitely seems like a good idea. I guess if something annoys me about one system, I can swap to the other and vice versa.

@theshadow: that makes me feel better knowing there's less whinging associated with fantasy... After all, that's pretty much my number 1 gripe with 40k. The idea of solid counters to gimmicky builds is also comforting.

You guys have done well to answer my questions (veterans or not) and i feel more confident getting into the system - if not as a replacement, but a supplement to my 40k armies.

Time to buy some skeletons!
