So. I played a lot of 40k as a kid, and recently discovered net epic. I had some epic scale models as a kid, some of which I pulled out of shoeboxes etc.

I'm very interested in playing Epic. I was too young to play Space Marine at the time, but I've already had a lot of fun just with bits of paper with 'tactical marine squad' written on them and rolling the dice using my computer. Ebay beckons for miniatures.

I face a problem, however, which is that all of the gamers in my area are 'stereotypical' gamers who I don't get on with. Bad personal hygiene, check, excessive interest in Nazism, check, extremely petty personality types, check. I ran with this sort of dude as a teenager – I can't stand them. I guess it varies area to area.

So I've been working on a system to make one side of miniatures behave according to an algorithm. So far it's very simple – they always move towards the enemy and always shoot at the nearest enemy in range. Obviously this primitive AI is very easy to beat. I was wondering if anyone here has any systems they use for playing against themselves.

When I play against myself, I don't really play for the sake of one side winning. It's more to see unfolding carnage on a battlefield. This often leads to ridiculous tactics used for the sake of using them or attempting to make heroic actions with characters (ex. Throwing Sicarius into melee against the Swarmlord). This also means that there are no favorites on who wins or not if you're focussing more on the battle itself other than the victor of said battle. Then again, I don't play Epic so I don't know how well this would work with the Epic rules. Don't know if that helps, but I hope it does!

What Skavenlord said. I also modify the rules as needed - I was trying out my Stormboyz the other day and went "feth it, I know theres no space on top of that building but they'll just knock the enemy back and assault anyway"

LOL. Welcome to the world of gamers.

Bad hygiene, obesity, stench, social ineptitude, mental issues. Yes, mental issues are common with those folks as well. I have seen it.

Where do you people play? I have almost none of these issues with the gamers I hang out with.

That being said, the only time I play 40k or anything by myself is to test out some new unit or whatever. I simply try to do whats best for each side as if I was only playing that side. Definitley not as fun as playing with your buddies, but it helps test out new units and lets you find out their strengths and weaknesses on the tabletop.

It varies a lot, it's really just my local crowd I'm talking about and they're who I'm stuck with because I can't afford to travel very far. I've just 'rolled an unlucky dice' in terms of having a lot of people who conform more or less exactly to the outsider's stereotype of a gamer. And, you know, obviously a guy called 'bloodbath' isn't exactly earth-normal himself, so.

For those who are interested, my experiments with netepic are continuing apace. Recently some buildings (egg boxes and old electronics packaging) were incorporated and two space marine tactical detachments fought over them. I love the mechanic for taking buildings and all the modifiers it gives you. I wasn't expecting terrain (and its destructibility) to play such a big role. Next the detachments will actually have the rhinos they should have according to their army list and I'm going to play with rushing across the battlefield and disgorging a load of marines.

By the way: does this forum have any stock advice (or a thread?) for buying epic minis on ebay? I've spotted what seem to be some good deals, and I'm au fait with the army lists to know that some of the 'job lots' are going to be mostly unplayable.

My advice is to head over to Tactical Command and try their opponent finder thingy and try and attend a few events.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I have restrained myself from writing something on this forum...

Playing with yourself can be fun but only if you have no other alternative desire to play with a partner and try to find the right one.

If all the players in your area are in poor shape and indeed they sound hideous. I would suggest finding someone outside your current field who is experimental and desires to learn new things.

I wish you well lone player...

This post made me giggle uncontrollably

I do frequently play games of 40k against myself when I'm bored or when I want to try out new strategies. It can be a lot of fun, but the best games are still against friends.
I know the kind of people the OP is describing and I can't blame him for not hanging out with them. If I see those kind of people at my FLGS I usually remember that I still have a lot of homework to do
I'm really glad my friends are not like that.
However, I may or may not have a slight obsession with nazism. I have a rather large collection of nazi hats :3
But I also collect soviet hats, so make of it what you want. I just really like ww2 stuff. Some of it is even authentic.

Not sure if you are still looking at this thread but Dirtside 2 used a sequential turn system, and to keep track of what units have been moved, the chits can be downloaded for free of the ground zero games. Or you can make your own .

I hope this helps.
