Now I know that they cannot be used for the purposes of cover, but in terms of deep striking right by an objective marker, are they impassible terrain? I was playing the other day and my opponent said that they were and that he had to deep strike a short distance away because of it being impassible. Is this right?

There is nothing stating that Objective markers are Impassable.

However under many scenarios you should discuss their status with your opponent. If you are using Mysterious Objectives they might be Impassable.

If you did not discuss the nature of the Objectives pregame they default to not Impassable

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

So you can deepstrike a group clustered around an objective marker? Probably.

Depending on its nature, yes.

But decide this upon starting the game.
