I decided that I should start investing in a shooty army, especially since my friends are playing horde armies like Orks and Tyranids.

Since we usually play 1500 pts. with those armies, I decided to think about investing with a Tau army. I got the codex and ended up with a list resembling this.

HQ- Commander w/ Twin-Linked Burst Cannon, Target Lock, Vectored Retro-thrusters- 110 pts.
Troops- 10 Fire Warriors w/ Bonding Knife Ritual- 100 pts.
Troops- 10 Fire Warriors w/ Bonding Knife Ritual- 100 pts.
Troops- 10 Fire Warriors w/ Bonding Knife Ritual- 100 pts.
Troops- 10 Fire Warriors w/ Bonding Knife Ritual- 100 pts.
Elite- 3 Crisis Battlesuits w/ 3 Flamers, 2 Burst Cannons, Airbursting Fragmentation Projector, 3 Vectored Retro-thrusters- 131 pts.
Elite- 3 Crisis Battlesuits w/ 3 Twin-Linked Fusion Rifles, 3 Vectored Retro-thrusters- 101 pts.
Elite- Riptide w/ 2 Shielded Missile Drones, Advanced Targeting System, Velocity Tracker- 255 pts.
Fast- 5 Pathfinders- 55 pts.
Fast- Sun Shark Bomber- 160 pts.
Heavy- Hammerhead Gunship w/ Submunition Rounds, Advanced Targeting System- 140 pts.
Heavy- Hammerhead Gunship w/ Submunition Rounds, Advanced Targeting System- 140 pts

TOTAL- 1492 pts.

I could invest in a neuroweb jammer for the commander, but I'm not sure that it's worth it...

Any suggestions?

Couple notes:

Twin-linked on a commander is a waste, he's already BS5. Also, who is he with? You only need one VRT in the unit to grant those abilities to the whole unit, you've got about a million of them.

Bonding is a waste.

Never, ever buy shielded missile drones for a riptide. Then somebody kills a drone and all of a sudden you're taking a morale check...

Advanced Targeting System = No.

What weapons did you give your riptide? You don't say here. I presume HBC+SMS? If so replace ATS with EWO.

Marker Drones > Pathfinders, Pathfinders = First Blood.

If you're going to take Hammerheads you need Longstrike. Again, lost the ATS. And replace one Hammerhead with a Skyray.

Alright, that sounds good. Let's see...

I mainly took twin-linked so that I could both reroll the few 1's I get and because I was unsure whether to take the plasma rifle or the fusion gun... looking at it, probably the fusion gun. And I didn't know that the entire unit benefited from one VRB. I'll have to edit that.

Why is Bonding Knife Ritual a waste? It's only ten points, and it might allow me to keep contesting an objective or holding a position.

That's... understandable. I don't want my Riptide running away just because his drones were destroyed.

Advanced Targeting System... why not? It gives me a defense against a drop pod assault (or, in my case, a Boss Zagstruk attack).

Alright, that's understandable. EWO's pretty handy, but same reason above for why I picked it first.

Meh... just meh. I never really liked the idea of taking just a squad or Marker Drones. If I end up doing that, I'll probably end up sticking another commander in with them as well with an Iridum battlesuit and a Drone Controller.

My problem with a Skyray is it doesn't default with a weapon- just six seeker missiles. Basically, with markerlight support, three turns. Even then... I would've taken one, but one of my friends was saying that if I get started on Tau, then Hammerheads were my bread and butter.

Bonding is a waste because it only allows you to REGROUP on unmodified leadership. You only would be rallying on modified if you were below 25%...and if one of your units is down to 2 guys...it's already over for them man. Save the points.

Here's why advanced targeting is useless: You need a 6 to get a precision shot, then roll to wound, THEN your opponent needs to fail a 2+ look out sir for it to land on him THEN he still has to fail his cover/invul, which he likely has at least the former.

And a Skyray DOES have other weapons systems. It has a Twin-linked SMS and BS4 networked markerlights.
