Dogma just posted something kind of cool:
http://www.tmz.com/2013/12/20/terry-bradshaw-duck-dynasty-guy-taking-scripture-too-literally/?adid=sidebarwidget-tmzsports
From that I got inspired to start this thread up and encourage people to find similar tales in the news or biographies from when well known people stood at a crossroads and took a path that could have easily gone in another direction. Automatically Appended Next Post: This is a huge assed what if:

I don't actually see the difference between what Phil or Terry are saying.
Phil also mentions love in his original GQ article.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed. |

I'm not focusing on what they say but the fact that while Phil was playing football, Terry sat on the bench. It was when Phil decided to quit football in favor of duck hunting that Terry got to play.

There's actually a really cool book about military what if's, called "What If", edited by Robert Cowley. It's got some pretty cool things in it, for example what if the Persians won Salamis, if D-Day failed etc. It's pretty cool, though perhaps in some of its views a bit dated - it was published about 10 years ago.

Perhaps it is best it stays in the past.
An updated version would probably involve speculation of alien invasions or if terminator robots were involved.

Also the follow up book called "More What If". I have both on my bookshelf.

Operation Anvil (renamed Dragoon).
The invasion of Southern France following Normandy. Churchill argued that the invasion should have occured in the Balkans, and pushed to the Northeast to capture the oil fields from the Germans, and to put the Red Army in check, so the West would have better bargaining chips when the war ended.
Roosevelt (and Stalin) wanted to push into southern France. Stalins reasoning is kinda obvious. Roosevelt wanted to go into France because he figured it as a softer target. With it being an election year, he didn't want to throw American lives at an operation that would be a "harder" sell to the public.
Had Churchill won that fight, the possibility of the Cold War not happening could have come about.
