As part of a christmas gift to myself I ordered in bits from my favourite Forgeworld marines to make up a new Iron Hands captain for myself. Currently only loosely assembled due to lacking my primer/airbrush capabilities again till after christmas I'm really happy with how the bits come together.
Now named Captain Galenos Arkadios, Clan Sorrgol
Here he is in his unpainted glory:
With a head/shoulder pad close up:
Updated 30/12/2013 (New arm and servos)
As always I'm thrilled with the forgeworld detail level that they manager to fit onto a marine model, it needed very little cleanup to be workable and just a little scrub to take most of the mold release off of the model. I'm still working through Iron Hand background to find a suitable Clan to make him a captain of as I'm relatively new to IronHandiness so any advice there would be great. Also if there are specific colour scheme variants for different clans it'd be great to get a heads up.
Thanks for looking.

Looks good although it NEEDS bionics iron hands relish the opportunity to replace the flesh and I am pretty sure a captain would have at least one bionic component
I also believe they are either black or a very dark red

I concur about the bionics. the sword is from the the new van vet kit. love the body and pose though. Edit though if you can get it, an Ad mech power cog axe would look ballen on a iron hand guy i think.. or at least a hammer would be more practical in game than a sword

Hmm, can likely swap the entire of his right arm for a bionic one hopefully holding some sort of axe. A cursory check seems to turn up nothing on the bits market for either an Enginseer or Techmarines axe and I cant find a suitably heft looking hammer (non-traditional thunder hammer)

this guy has one an axe though im not sure you can get it as a separate bit.
as well you can get a decent multi pose bionic left arm from anvil industries i think.
as for the non traditional thunder hammer thats going to be hard one. though if you can scratch build the one to look like ferrus magnus's hammer that be kickin.

cant source it seperately but that thunder hammer is about what I was after, may pick up the kit and sell the rest on as bits to recoup the cost.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Edit:
OK plumped for picking up this guy:
Axe is in the correct hand so will be an easy enough switch over, it also gives me some servo arms to graft onto the model and a servo skull for flavour. Plus I can use the base model for a conversion for my Inquisition.

Just out of interest, i notice you're using the legion champion model, are the head and arms separate like that or did you have to hack at it?
I ask because i really like the Master of Signal model that comes with that set but really don't care for the Champion model. However, the torso and legs in your conversion don't look too bad at all.

You could use the ace from a tech marine this would keep the right scale compared to the marine
Gw also does a iron hands upgrade pack that has bionics in it

I looked at some of the Space Marine techmarine axes but they just dont do it for me (not sure why) its also finding one that is suitable to fit into a right hand (most techmarines are lefthanding theirs)

The Legs/Torso come as a single piece (also attached to the rock he is stood on) but the head/arms/backpack are all seperate pieces that there are much nicer versions of.

Or find a really ornate thunder hammer and give it a short staff so it looks custom made by the captain himself (and look like Thor's hammer lol)

Its a Forgeworld Titan Tech Priest model that I have been eyeing up for bits in the past. That and the titan crew are really nice models that I sadly never had a reason to buy in the past.

Looking very promising, but I'd echo the need for bionics - they really are a must have for Iron Hands.
I suggest, if you haven't already, then a read through of ' Wrath of Iron' by Chris Wraight, would set you on the right track regarding 40K Iron Hands. It really does explore the concept of weakness that the Iron Hands believe flesh to hold and how different their views are to their Primarch's original intentions. As brother marcus has stipulated above, Iron Hand Captains would have at least one bionic appendage. However, this is a huge understatement. Such is the Iron Hands drive for mechanical perfection (Ironic considering the Emperor's Children are their nemesis and crave perfection of the flesh), that it is rumoured that some of the most senior Iron Hands are almost 100% mechanical (See Arven Rauth on Lexicanum) - so that may have an impact on how you decide to develop your model. At the very least, the right hand of the captain should be bionic, as this is part of the marines induction to full battle-brother status.
Regarding the choice of Clan for him to command, having quickly zipped through the Lexicanum article, I'd say your best bets, unless you wish him to represent a specific named captain, would be Clans Avernii (The Morlocks), Ungavarr, Felg, Sorrgol, Atraxii or Morragul. The reason being is that, as far as Lexicanum states, the captains of these clans circa M41 have not been named - thus you can drop him straight in and build around him.
Once again - looking good!

I really like the way you've put together the different armour types. I wouldn't agree for more bionics for this guy as with all that mismatching armour it kind of implies he's been through some tough times. The way I look at it is that his left hand side is mostly bionic with the newer armour being his remaining organic side. I think the Iconography and colour scheme will really set this piece off too. Being painted in Iron Hands colours with that much iconography just screams bionic enhancements. I wouldn't say they always need to be visible. A good example of that in my mind would be the Iron Hand sternguard that GW painted up.

Thanks for the critique so far guys, will be looking into various options for a bionic right hand including the new Iron Hand kits from Forgeworld to see if I can source one (about 3.50 inc postage for one) orwork on the theory that there is a whole lot of bionics going on under the armour at this stage. Adding in some wear and tear to the armour is something I have been considering so far but I'm hoping someone has some tips on doing so without risking unneccesarily damaging the model.
I think I've settled on the Axe ( from Titan Techpriest) and Servoarms for the model, the sword doesnt scream ironhands atm and the weapon could do with being a bit more memorable.

Hehe, that's another of those paradoxical pieces of fluff. The funny thing is, that before the HH, when Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus were still firm friends, they engaged in a smithing contest.. Fulgrim forged a hammer, and Ferrus a sword. However, neither could decide which was the better weapon - so they exchanged them. So the paradoxical thing is that whereas the Iron Hands have since become known for their use of hammers (although not as much as the Salamanders), no doubt derived from Manus's use of 'Forgebreaker' (The hammer Fulgrim wrought), in fact the sword was the chosen weapon of Ferrus Manus - indeed it was a reforged Fireblade (The sword forged by Ferrus Manus) that Manus wielded in his final duel with Fulgrim (As Fulgrim had previously duelled Manus after he refused to join the traitors , but was forced to flee after Manus broke Fireblade). But I guess for a 40K setting, a sword is a touch out of place on an Iron Hand.

For the time being I have removed his entire right arm and ordered in a choice of 2 different new bionic ones from a bits dealer. I'm hoping that the arms, axe and servo arms will arrive early in the new year to make some more progress on them. For now I have nearly finished painting his head:
Feedback welcome as always
