So I'm getting back into the hobby for the first time in many years, and have a built a starter 1000pnt Ork list partially around models I already have.
Advice is definitely appreciated!

Better than most starter lists I've seen. Are you playing casual or tournament style?

Frankly I've not played with it yet as its still a WIP. Only got two mobs assembled and painted. Leaning towards casual though.
I realise that the looted wagon is a big fat AV 11 eggshell, but I've got a leman Russ model that I can't resist looting and using!
I'm vaguely thinking that the grots, cannons, and wagon will form a firebase to footslog forward from.
Included the kopters for some token anti-armour.

1000 points is a good starting point. Who will you be facing mostly?

Mostly Marines - both loyalist and spikey
Also a tyranid player

my $.02 is lootas for competitive or casual lootas are great.

I'm hearing good things about lootas everywhere!
Where would you fit them in the above list?
At the moment I'm saving them for a 1500point list.

If you dropped both deffkopters and and grot guns then that gives you about 200pts to spend on lootas which is enough at this point lvl to pick a target and it dies. I don't like deffkopters in single units also because its easy first blood.

Ehhh, I think grot guns are more bang for their buck. Lootas are good mainly because they are essentially extra heavy support slots

A couple of small units of Lootas would probably work well, they can split fire and can move and shoot snap shots where as your opponent can use terrain to block line of sight and avoid the Big Gunz. If you weren't planning on using the Deffkoptas to Outflank in Turn 2 or after they are going to give away an easy First Blood. With Orks it's pretty difficult to avoid giving away first blood anyway.
Looks like a pretty decent list to me as it is though.
