Hello All

I have recently purchased 2x Squads of Chaos Cultists 1x Hell Brute and 1x HQ Character (Can't Remember His Name) from the DV Boxed Set and now I'm looking to add to this to get me on the table gaming.

I'm thinking along the lines of a 1x box of Khorne Bezerkers (ELITE) and 1x box of Chaos Space Marines (TROOP) to start with any of you nice guys and gals got any further suggestions I would be really grateful

Thanks

Reece

I chose the Cultists Squads purely on the basis of I liked the look of them lol which I figured was a good a reason as any, they remind me of some of the guys you see in the Borderlands console games haha.

Box of Marines, most definitely. Can never go wrong with a box of CSM. They're going to add a good deal of versatility to the force, and can soak up a lot more damage than the cultists can.

Additionally, welcome to the fold. Chaos for the chaos gods and all that.

First of all, get a HQ that isn't trash, I'd start by getting a Terminator Lord/Sorceror or a named character for some real hitting and support power. Build your CSM and possibly Berserkers up, then start adding some heavier things like the Baleflamer Helldrake, because it gives you an edge against harder Codexes and entrenched infantry.

Cool thanks for the replies really appreciate it I'm going to start by looking for a better HQ choice as recommended then add the CSM and Beserkers am I correct in thinking that the Cultists are a wee bit squishy and therefor it is best to hold them further back ?

Depends on your opponent and how you run them. I typically use mine as a surging meat shield or to keep more elite units tied up in close combat.

I can't think of a situation where I'd want to hold them back, honestly. They are squishy, and typically short-lived, so it's often best to throw them into things and get some use out of them before they get turned into salsa.

Personally, I wouldn't even buy a model for the HQ choice. With a few boxes of models, you will have enough bits to convert one of the squad champions into a pretty generic looking lord that you can field and test without spending a lot of money. I have had great success running lords without terminator armour. Make sure to but some rhinos! Personally, I play without fliers (my group likes it that way), but heldrakes are probably the best unit in the codex.

As sad as it is to say. The CSM in the CSM codex are trash. Go for cultists.

Most armies in the CSM dex go like this:

big scary HQ that unlocks elites as troops, with an escort unit and some form of mobility (land raider, deep striking, bikes, not a rhino!)
the corresponding elite (now troop) squads in rhinos, and some cultists for cheap troops
big scary daemon engines/FMCs to provide target saturation to distract the opponent from your elite troops

So decide on a god, build up a fun army with cool fluff, then slap on 2 heldrakes and make it decent.

You will have fun with Possessed.

You will never have any idea what the hell they're doing, or about to do, but fun will be had.

This sounds very similar to when I started out with Chaos!
Do you have the CSM codex yet? If you dont, get it before you really start assembling modals. That way you can read up on the different units and get a feel for what you really want!

My advice would be:
Dont assemble the possessed modals as possessed. They are a bit sucky, and you really need a bigger squad of them then 5. I would make an HQ from that set, then use the rest as bits for making my other dudes look more chaosy

You might also want to consider using the normal CSM as cult troops (Such as Plague Marines etc) It tends to be cheaper then the normal boxes. Although the Berzerkers modals are pretty sweet!

Last thing, Bikes are awesome.

Have fun man! Thats the most important part of it, and if you think it looks cool do it!

Well I have assembled the possessed and they look cool would it be worth adding 5 more to the force I was thinking of another Battalion Boxed set ? that would then give me 10 Possessed, 6 Bikes and another squad of CSM and the transport of course ?

Just a quick one do I have to add a Possessed Champion to my squad of five and the same for the Bikers do I need to have a Chaos Biker Champion ? Sorry for all the questions it's all just a tad confusing at the moment lol.

Yeah, you do need a champion for every squad. That said, it can just be a normal model in the squad, but you can add extra special wargear to champions like power weapons etc.

Another battalion box would serve you well! 6 bikes makes a pretty good base for your army and will allow you to run whatever else you want.

As someone said, get a nice hq. Named ones are quite nice, personally I like Be' Lakor (digital download), Typhus (makes cultists zombies) or get a lord (nurgle or Khorne) on a bike/juggernaut in a squad of bikers/spawn.

Newer player, but have been stomped enough times to know what works and what doesn't as far as CSM go

I would really look into getting a Helldrake with a Baleflamer. As a Space Marine player they are very scary and are one of the 3 or so units that is the saving grace of your codex

Don't buy a Heldrake if you don't want one, UKSidewinder. Yes they're fun and effective at what they do, but they're expensive, they're ugly, they piss people off, and they can become a crutch. Read up on their hype before coming to a decision. Remember, at GW prices, you can't afford NOT to do research before buying!

Definitely get your hands on a copy of the Codex before you go crazy with models, but once you've read through everything you should have a decent idea which direction you want to take your army.
And you should spend some time reading through the Army List section of the 40K forums here; read up on different Chaos Space Marine lists and see what people are using and why. Plus, read up on your likely opponents to learn what you'll be facing and need to counter.

Personally I find the box of CSM (especially if they've got a ride!) to be a decent addition; yes they're vanilla marines, but they're cheaper than loyalist marines and more durable than cultists. That said, I also field plenty of cultists as cannon-fodder, distraction units, objective grabbers, etc.
I've just picked up my first 5 possessed but have used them in a kill-teams game (200pts) to great effect.
The helbrute is one of my favourite models, and can be quite effective once you learn to use it properly.
Your bikes are effective and scary. Enjoy them!

As for your HQ, CSM have a lot of options and I'd recommend testing them out in different combinations before committing to anything. After playing with 'em for a while I still go back and forth between Chaos Lords, Sorcerers, Typhus, mounted Chaos Lords, Huron, Daemon Prince, recently Be'lakor, and more Chaos Lords.

Try everything and see what fits your play style!

Well I have been reading through the codex today and still a little confused but I will get there I will attempt to put together a list ASAP and see what the consensus is on my army. The advice and help I have received on DakkaDakka is just awesome and I thank you all.
