Subject: What unit to couple with the Storm Wing? or More Models, More Problems

Hello all, i am the proud recipient of a brand new Stormwing for Christmas! (Shameless plug: via a swapshop trade with Stricknasty: good deal, open communication, quick delivery)
I am pretty excited about this, ever since i started my white scars successor army "The Stormriders" 15ish years ago I wanted some close air support... before i had to settle for speeders, but now the time has finally come, and with appropriately named planes!!
Honestly i think the models are pretty goofy, but there seems to be an abundance of converters online with similar thoughts and a ton of good ideas... so im looking forward to making them both more "plane-like".
The only rules ive seen are snippets online, but the cargo capacity of the Straven makes me question if im missing out in my plan to use them as pure air superiority. How reliable is the Storm Raven as a transport? I dont want to invest in a squad just to have them DIAF as my plane comes crashing to the ground because they never got a chance to deploy. Right now i think a tactical squad or sternguard/death company with bolters are my main options, either for a scoring unit on objectives, or some elite close-range fire support behind the main lines. I know a lot of wild sh!t is possible now; Can i have an allied unit of death company deploy in my raven while its in reserves?

Allies can not deploy in the main detachement transports. You could of course ally the stormraven in as a BA raven and have DC inside. The BA raven is slightly better than the SM raven, so if you have the slots for it, it may be a good option to run it as BA
It is however not the greatest transport. May be nice to have the option sometimes, but in general, it is much better to use it as a gunship.
It starts in reserve, so you get your guys in at earliest turn 2, and if you want them to charge something, turn 3 at the earliest. It is extremely dangerous for the passengers if it dies, it is a gunship that might not want to go where the passengers want to go etc.

Hmm, I think I want to keep it as a stormwing unit as it gives 'strafing run' to the ravne... although I haven't even considered a different option. Why do you say the BA one is better?
Also, I really want to go for a B17 look for my Raven, I'm surprised they didn't go for a more elongated body and a more central wing. The more I look at it the more I want to change :(

The BA raven has AP1 missiles while the marine one has AP2 concussive missiles.
The marine one get`s cheaper extra armour though, so it is pretty close, but I would say the BA one is a little bit better.
Everything on it is twin-linked, so it doesn`t benefit that much from strafing run. The real bonus of the formation is that it doesn`t use any slots.
