My buddy is looking to start Cryx and I want to help get him started by buying him his first war caster. Any opinions on a good, simple starter caster?

Honestly the warcaster that Cryx get in their battlebox is really good. pDenny has a great feat, a good spell list and abilities. Without anymore info she would be good place to start.

pDenny or pGaspy is pretty good. He seems simple enough but he does have a lot of depth (and 14 focus on his feat turn with a weapon that automatically hits.)

For Cryx the starter box is a really great place to start. I still love pDenny.

But if you don't want to get the starter box you could get a caster and a box of 2 nightwretches. Then build from there.

Pretty much every caster will want at least one arcnode (usually 2+) and the nightwretches are very solid and cheap.

Some people prefer other arcnodes, but unless you are familiar with them I'd start with 2 nightwretches.

pGaspy.

pDenny is a great caster. But she doesn't help you learn the game. pGaspy teaches all the basics of the game (protecting your caster, using buffs and debuffs), and the basics for spell casting Cryx.

So its a toss up between deneghra and asphyxious huh?

I can't get him the battle box, fiance would probably be mad at me since we are buying our first house. Just want to get him a little something for Christmas as he just got out of an 8 month stay in the hospital. I think I will get him asphyxious and the cryx paint set to get him started. Then maybe my friends and I will go in on the box set for his birthday to expand his options a little bit.

Yeah, as a first caster pGaspy is a good way to go. He really should be our battle box caster since he's much more in tune with the basic mechanics of the game than pDenny is. She plays a good bit differently than most of our other casters and doesn't really teach beyond utterly crippling your opponent. While that's a perfectly valid tactic, there is more to the game than that.

I've been playing on and off for a few years now and Deneghra gets my vote!

pDenny is an amazing warcaster, there's no doubt about that. She just doesn't teach you the core mechanics of the game. One of the guys on the Privateer Press forum has this in his signature: "Learning the game with pDenny is like bringing a baseball bat to a fistfight. You'll probably win, but you might lose. Either way, you didn't learn anything about fistfights."
