So I'm having a proxy battle with a friend in a week or so. All hes told me is that his faction starts with an "E". I'm guessing its Eldar, but it might be some small faction, like the Exorcists successor chapter from the Space Marines.
Assuming he isn't being a riddly bastard, lets go with Eldar.
He said I'll never expect his list, but he has no knowledge of the metagame or of popular Eldar lists, so that has no affect on his list. I'm guessing it'll be spammy in some capacity.
My only requirement is that I take Thousand Sons so I can get some experience with them and their weaknesses.
Suggestions on what to bring, guesses on his list?
Thanks!
EDIT: yes he just confirmed it is Eldar

Thousand Sons:
Weaknesses: Expensive, Vulnerable to small arms fire, lack of overwatch, cannot run, inflexible.
The most significant of these is small arms fire. Keep them away from rapid fire weapons because they die like ordinary marines.
The only way I have found to do this is to screen them with faster units and tie up those units that are a threat to them. Allied Daemons work a treat, as you can throw screamers and flamers at your opponent to tie up those rapid fire units that are such a threat to 1ksons.
Thirdly, only take a couple of 9-man 1ksons squads. Use cheaper troop choices to support them. Pure 1kson armies do not work, even in laid back fun games. They are just inflexible and too expensive.
Good choices are Pink Horrors, Cultists and ordinary CSM squads.
Strengths: 4++, can shoot then charge, come with a psyker.
To play to their 4++ strength, they are best being walked up onto the mid-field, soaking up long range high strength high AP weapons, while keeping rapid fire weapons away from them using your screening units.
Being able to rapid fire their ap3 boltguns and then charge can be extremely useful for clearing objectives. Yeah, once they are in close combat they wont do much, but are surprisingly good at tarpitting units such as terminator squads due to their 4++ invulnerable. People often forget the Sorcerer has a force sword so you can actually luck out sometimes and activate it to take out multi-wound characters. Just save your warp charge point to do this. I have on a few occasions taken out chaplains and librarians doing this lol No one expects it.
Late game Thousand Sons excel. Keep then alive and protect them until then and they can be made to work.
Core of your army might include:
HQ
Sorcerer w/ mark of tzeentch, terminator armour, burning brand of Skullthrax, level 2.
The best build I have found so far. He gets 4++, makes 1ksons scoring, and the burning brand gives him an ap3 flamer, which works nicely when you attach him to a 1kson squad, as it gives them some very effective overwatch (which they lack).
Troops
1ksons x9
1ksons x8
Cultists x10 (in reserve)
CSM x5 w/x1 plasma + Rhino
CSm x5 w/x1 plasma + Rhino
The rest is depending on your play style. Just remember you need screening units, Chaos Bikers, Allied Daemons, Raptors, Chaos Spawns, more Cultists etc. And a Heldrake is always a good idea.
