Alright, I have just flushed out my Tau army save for the fire warriors. I have a single squad from a battle box and I have been using blood angel squads to proxy the rest. Much to my (expected) disappointment, I hate gun lines. They aren't fun to play as or against. Now my flg already has two farsight enclave players, it looks okay but maybe not my style. And I understand its grating to play against. I understand there is a lot of tau hate right now, but I started buying the plastic before I started reading, because I always liked the tau and I saw the badarse new model. So I'm pot committed to finishing the army, and I do enjoy playing it. My plan is to run 3 teams of 20 kroot, each with a hound and sniper ammo. Depending on how well it works I may got to four teams. The idea is to leave no template fodder on the table at the beginning of the game. Then once the game is in full swing I should have infiltrated from multiple board edges, giving me a huge and widely spaced presence of scoring troops. All hopefully after things such as template threats, wave serpents, and the like have been mitigated.

The reason I have decided to go with kroot is the sniper ammo, infiltrate (with reroll for board edge due to the hound), and finally their wonderful capability to tarpit. The sniper ammo is just perfect for ruining a monsterous creature's day, or stripping hp off fliers, and my meta is lousy with both. I'll do a basic run of my list.

HQ
Buffmander

Fightmander

Elite

Riptide HBC

Riptide IA

Troops

3x 20 man kroot w/hound/sniper rounds

3 man sunforge crisis

Fast attack

4x 5 man pathfinder

Heavy support

2x skyray

I've allied farsight enclave for the crisis as troops and the extra pathfinder squad.

I'd go less buffing / markerlighting and more firepower. Personally. But I'm not sure what a fightmander is? Is it a buffmander with the gauntlet?

I have 140 pts left to spend before I hit 1850. I'll be adding in another crisis team most likely. A buffmander has no weapons all his slots are filled with buffing equipment. The fightmander has weapons and buffing eq. The point of the thread is more about the kroot. Will they be annoying to play against? Or moreover will they be less annoying than a gun line. I don't want to irk players as I'm new to my flg. And I want to bring some new flavor to the table.

Also 20 kroot with sniper can pop 12 av and is deadly to high toughness models as they auto wound on 4+.

Well a buff mander has all the buffing sig systems, if a fight mander has weapons and buffing then he's illegal as you can only have 1 of each sig system and also weps are pointless as he will need to forgo his shooting to buff.....kroot are ace but I think you maybe going ott on them. They will be wiped quite easily by bolter fire. Also 4 squads of pathfinders is way too much. You losing out on vital fire power.

Why are you so worried about what would be "annoying" to play against.

Play your army how YOU want to play it so long as the rules are correct and you follow FOC. Who cares if someone hates your army. Let them hate it. Not saying to just be a dick and rofl stomp your friends all the time, but you shouldn't have to limit yourself to the point where you come to a forum to request people make your list easier to beat.

As an example, i lost my riptide turn 2 because my friend hit it with a sniper bullet from an assassin that removed his invuln save and then hit it with a deepstrike squad with grav guns and turned him into a fine blue mist. It was annoying as HELL and it made me grumpy, but that's the game. I played through it and almost won.

But kroot are pretty strong. Just keep in mind they have a 6+ armor save and S3, so they're weak.

Ok there's the fighting commander from my list. I thought he had a buffing system but its just puretide.

I know kroot are squishy as the squishiest squishers. But there are 63 of them and gods willing there will be some cover. I am marker heavy but I'm going to try it. If I can't spend em I'll lose a squad and so on. And there will be another crisis squad I have the points left i just haven't gotten to deciding if I want a hammerhead with long strike or the crisis team. I think I'll use the markers, think 20 sniper rounds, 17 hits, 9 wounds, no cover, 4 markerlights to get there.

I accidentally tapped submit on my iPad.

They can also reliably strip hp from av 12. Which answers my flyer/transport woes. My meta is also wraithknight heavy, these kroot will eat wraithknight lunches in one volley every time with only one ml. I haven't thought much past that, I know they suck at a lot of things but the tides and crisis teams are there for those things.

As far as "not being annoying" I really just want to be different but effective. Nobody in my meta runs gunline tau but its boring and sucks and makes me sad, so I won't be doing that either.

Why does no one do mounted Tau? Tons of devilfish, hammerheads, piranhas, etc. I think that would be different, and fun!

Because DF/HH/SR took an arrow to the knee. Unable fire as a fast skimmer really hurt them as rapid transport and highly mobile fire platforms. The DF is over twice the cost of a rhino only a bit more surviable and has lower practical fire power. The Heads while well armed lose firepower when moving and have to move to get the jink save. Skyray is skyfire MLs, but still gets forced to either move or shoot.

Piranha's are actually pretty nice still. Full squad gives you 5 AV hunters and and 10 Infantry killers.

Ah I see, well you can't take empire sig systems on a farsight enclaves hq, so you can't take the pen chip on him, only farsight sig systems.

Let's face it when have Tau not been annoying? I hated them back when I played dark eldar 8 years ago. I hated them when I played CSM 5+ years ago. I hated them when I played SM 2 years ago.

Long ranged fire power, and they typically turtle in a corner, and shoot at you very very effectively.

However that said people have always found Eldar to be annoying. They do a lot of sitting, and shooting and have a lot of gimmicks = hate.

So don't worry about what is annoying play what you want.
