I'm a 22 year old from New Zealand. It has been around a decade since I've played 40K (or fantasy for that matter) and to tell you the truth I never had much success with either (in terms of developing good assembly and painting skills or actually getting around to playing much). In the last 4 days or so I have seen a friends of mine engage in two battles (the same guy playing two different opponents). At first I felt it was kind of dull but part way through the second battle I could see myself starting to gain an appreciation of all the logic and thought processes involved in the whole thing along with the hilarity that often comes with the nature of anything that involves dice rolling.
I've just got my B.A in Anthropology and am currently searching for work. When I have money I think I take the plunge into 40K (but not before I buy new pickups for a guitar of mine). I am thinking of going with a Slaanesh army because I feel a pull towards them visually and conceptually (although I've read that a mono-Slaanesh army can be a very bad choice if you don't know how to use them). For all intents and purposes I consider myself a complete beginner and I am looking to get whatever advice I can from the members of this forum. At present I'm simply trying to get a grip on everything I will need to get all of this underway (when I have a job and money). So far I have:
* Slaanesh's Ecstasy
* 40K rulebook
* Chaos Daemon Codex
* Citadel black spray paint
* Slaanesh paint collection (possibly, I might just buy some paints individually)
* A Warhammer case for models (when I was younger I made the mistake of using generic cardboard boxes. So much more trouble and grief came with them than they were worth)
* Citadel paint station (possibly, it looks like it might be helpful)
* Dice (I don't believe I have enough lying around)
* Glues for the plastic and metal models
* Filers (will probably just buy some generic ones)
* Possibly those damage templates though some of my friends do have them
I'm sure there is a lot more. Yikes, this is all looking really expensive. But I'd like to dive into all the same, you know?
Anyway, I hope I haven't raved too much and hopefully I can get some good advice here.
Cheers,
William.

Thanks for the welcome!
Could someone give me a general idea of the inadequacies that a mono-Slaanesh army would likely have? Automatically Appended Next Post: I should add that I'm actually now gravitating towards playing a Necrons army. I played with them when I was younger and have always liked them. They are also much cheaper in general than Daemons of Chaos seem to be and they will probably be more forgiving of my non-existent painting skills.

Glad to hear! Don't know how easy gauss flyers are to paint though.
If you would like help with you're painting skills, the people in the painting and modeling forum are quite nice people. Feel free to ask your questions there if you need anything.
Good luck with your necrons and welcome to Dakka!
