Subject: Help Settle a Dispute: Base Size Changing

My brother and I pretty much just play against each other exclusively. He plays Orks at this point and has been doing a lot of conversions. Now the dispute we are having revolves around the base sizes and since we disagree, we decided to post this question to the masses and follow popular opinion.
He wants to convert his Warboss into a model that will end up being as big as a Dreadnaught, so it will need a dreadnaught base. I feel that conversions are great, but for the sack of balance and the rules they need to remain on the intended bases. He feels that I am being too restrictive. What do you guys think? Should we allow conversions that go up in base size? Is that something that is common place in other play groups?
We really do appreciate the input. Thanks!

The bigger base is a drawback for him because you will be able to get more of your models in base to base with his warboss. If he's as big as a dreadnought, then he can be targeted like a dreadnought.

A lot of my Tyranid conversions have been upped a base size because the supplied bases are too small. Same for my Tau stealth suits (new pattern plastic kits).
In most circumstances it is a disadvantage to be on a larger base.

A bigger base is actually worse for him, especially for a melee centered unit since more models can be in base-to-base contact.
For balance reasons? Would be best to keep to a normal base.
In the end it's a game for fun, I wouldn't have a massive problem with it since it seems the conversion will be a big one...but others may. It's not hurting you in anyway, it actually helps you out.

It'll also be harder for him to get into btb in some instances due to the base size, not to mention navigating terrain, etc.
The rules dictate that the models should be based on the base provided for the model. Conversions always operate, in my opinion, on the rule of cool. If its a cool conversion, and not being modeled for advantage, then its all good.
Since you're playing amongst yourselves, whatever you all want to do is the right thing.

Generally speaking, you need to keep your models on the same base they were intended to go on.
That being said, if you're his only opponent, and you okay it, then who are we to stop you?
