The only review I found degenerated into a discussion about the Stormraven..

What are your opinions on the storm talon in 6th ed? I was thinking of taking two and a Stormraven (so yeah, that box set would be perfect for what I'm thinking of)

I see only two downsides to Storm Talons:

1. No way to give them multi-meltas
2. AV 11

Most flyers are av 11 or less so that's not bad. They make good anti air and anti teq/light armor. With strafing run and potms they make a decent little gun ship.

Stormtalon is solid, but not as good as NightScythe or Vendetta.

AV11 and HP2 is the killer for me. If it was one or the other they wouldn't be that bad. Even the Stormraven is irrelevant when you can just take a Fire Raptor for a couple more points.

good assault cannon platform, taking the formation for space wolves since we can finally use a flier. Plan on magnetizing guns though just for options, I've seen a storm talon get downed pretty quickly before but not before getting shots off and doing damage and there was another one that stuck around the rest of the game.

The AV11 is a bummer but as far as space marine stuff goes it's pretty cheap for the fire power. If your taking a stormtalon and a storm raven, position the storm raven so that it blocks LOS from the primary skyfire platform to the stormtalon. Then at least you'll get a cover save without taking your Jink.

I was already thinking to type, ' if you go with 'talon TAKE 2!!' but you said that, and with stormraven, it will really be nasty, just remember to load something like assault termies in Stormraven, and GL

I think really nasty is overblowing it.

Depends on the meta. My one group uses no flyers currently, although I have them, I have chosen not to up the arms race in the small group and we play 1500 points or less. A talon in this group would be a nasty surprise since no one brings AA(except me but its dual purpose) and in low point games an aircraft this cheap would do well. In larger point games with multiple sources of AA a Talon is an easy VP unless you bring multiple to try and overwhelm their AA. I would prefer Storm Ravens and FireHawks in larger point games just for survivability.

I like the stormtalon. Mine flies solo (only own one) with the skyhammers. It's a reasonable amount of mobile firepower for the points. While fragile against AA fire, the fact that it is a flyer gives it a decent amount of protection against everything else.

I don't ally or use FW, so that limits my AA options. The talon makes a scrappy little dogfighter. And if the skies are clear, can take apart targets of opportunity on the ground. I've never felt that it was a waste of points/space to take it. But if you do use allies and/or FW, and play competitively, you might want to look into stronger options.

One of my issues with it, particularly if you are going to take two, is that each one takes up a FA slot. One of the driving forces against me picking up a second is I'd have no space for it in many of the lists I put together.

While it's outclassed by other Flyers, it can still be a nice little flyer.

I roll with two in most of my lists, they generally work as my anti air (I have a stormraven I'm working on right now as well). I like the little buggers, either they draw an incredible amount of fire from people trying desperately to shoot it down without skyfire, or it ruins some light vehicle's day.

For its points, the Talon is solid. I often take two. Very rare that both die and so far they consistently earn back their points.

I just run them as skyhammers and use them as interceptors and vehicle hunters.

They are extremely versatile units and syper useful if you have a way to manipulate reserves and make sure they arrive t2
The new codex giving them strafing run really made tham excellent fast attack choices

I have been "lucky" in a way:
I am the only one who fielded a flier so-far in my group and it has been fun for all groups.
It likes to show up from reserves VERY late.
It usually appears, blows up an enemy squad, does a victory lap and game over.
They started taking bets that he would show up on turn 5...
I keep saying the new nav computer has some issues.

It is decent but as people get more accustomed to fielding some kind of anti-air, it will die like anything else.

If you are doing that, get the new DataSlate Formation for that. It brings all three in from reserve as a single unit with and enhanced escort rule, gives the Raven Strafe USR, and frees up the Heavy and Fast attack slots in the list. Only downside is you lose Chapter Tactics (only really affects IH)

The pinning check alone from these little buggers are awesome. And that's completely discounting the wound generation and anti air capabilities they bring for a very reasonable price.

I run 2 storm talons and 2 thunderfires so I can put out 4+ pinning checks a turn and let me tell you it starts to frustrate opponents.

Formation is sweet. Lets me do things like Centurions in a Raven with Tiggy in a WS list.

If vs other flyers, come on from reserves, move over enemy, hit it with Wings of Iron (Ld 8 check to autohit with S8 during movement) from Death From The Skies book. Target is likely still alive so rotate assault cannon to fire backward into his rear arc. Which is hopefully armor 10. You're losing the secondary weapon shots doing that but sometimes firing into rear armor makes up for it.

Storm Talons are mediocre, until you consider Strafing Run.

Mostly one takes flyers to deal with other flyers.

Most Flyers are good against other flyers, but do a little bit of damage against ground targets. If you can set up a storm talon in a position where it's not threatened (So, not playing tau) by too much - or there are bigger threats, it can provide excellent supporting fire for your army after dealing with flyers your opponents have lost. 2 stormtalons can toss out 12 S6AP4 shots as well as 4 S4AP6 blasts, all at BS5. This can rip a squad that has minimal (4+ or worse) cover to shreds. You're likely to hit your blasts within 2" of where you want and you should hit at least 11 times with assault cannons.

The other nice thing about stormtalons is the escort craft rule. IT allows you to bring on your flyer on the same turn as something more threatening, like say, a squad of terminators in a land raider or a 6-man centurion squad with grav amps (not recommended but fething scary if you have to face one.) If they intercept your flyer, they don't get to harm your other squad before it unloads on them. If they intercept your other squad, they don't get to hurt the flyer. Either way you're protecting one of your investments.
