Hello all! I'm getting back into 40K after a long hiatus (the last time I played 2nd ed. was changing to 3rd ed.). I have two lists I'm posting here and would appreciate feedback. This will mostly be for friendly games, although I may join a local tournament now and again. My long term goal is an Imperial Guard army with SM allies, but I'm waiting for the IG 6th ed. codex to arrive. The SM army I'm building is based on the ancient Spartans, and as such I plan to make heavy use of storm shields, especially as the army gets larger.

List 1:
Chaplain (120 pts total)
Terminator Armor

Tactical Squad (160 pts total)
Additional 5 Marines
Missle Launcher
Flamer

Tactical Squad (160 pts total)
Additional 5 Marines
Missle Launcher
Flamer

Scout Squad (125 pts total)
Additional 5 scouts
Teleport Homer
Melta Bombs for SGT
Close Combat Weapons

Assault Terminators (220 pts total)
TH/SS x4

Thunderfire Cannon (100 pts total)

Predator
(115 pts total)
Lascannon Side Sponsons

List 2:

Chaplain (110 pts total)
Jump Pack
Melta Bombs

Same 2 tac squads as above (320 pts total)

Scout Squad (84 pts total)
Additional scout
Sniper Rifles
Camo Cloaks

Vanguard Veterans (271 pts total)
Additional 3 Vets
Jump Packs
Power Weapon for SGT
Storm Shields x8

Thunderfire Cannon (100 pts total)

Predator (115 pts total)
Lascannon Side Sponsons

The unit types I don't want to use are bikes of any sort. I know they're super effective in 6th, but it just doesn't fit my "fluff." Again, this is based on ancient Spartans so SS and CC will be important, especially when they're backing up an IG army! Thanks everyone!

I would also take feedback on which Chapter Tactics to use!

Welcome to Dakka!

Missile Launchers get a lot of flak (no pun intended), so you might be better with a plasma cannon or lascannon.

It's not a bad list by any means, but those Vanguard look expensive for a small list.

I imagine it's all the shields you've got for the fluff

If you like shields for the fluff, have a look at the seige vanguard assault list (free on the forgeworld site). The tactical squads get an option of a seige mantlet which allows them to reroll armour saves for +50pts for the squad (they dont work in assault however). These can easily be modelled as shields and will allow you to equip your entire army with shields (be they storm shields or seige mantlets). Now Im not saying this will be massively competative, but it will look stupendously awsome if thats the way you would like to take it. Just another option for you to consider.

Oh and you can take assault squads (non jp) as troops and give them combat shields (which admittedly are pants gameplay wise) for +25pts for the squad.

I actually like both lists - I like to use storm shields on vets as well, although they are nowhere near worth the points in any recent edition.

Of the two, I would think that the first list is dramatically more competitive.

Cheers,

V

For the greater glory of the Zoat Empire!
