I've been thinking and talking about a heavily Norse themed Thousand Sons army, and it's finally starting to really come together. However, it's been tough building an effective list, while maintaining the theme. I've also got a unit of Flamers of Tzeentch I'd like to add in, but I don't think there's anywhere I can do enough trimming without making them a liability. Here's the list I came up with, I would appreciate constructive criticism, and evaluation. ThanksI
HQ:
Chaos Sorcerer (Loki) - Power Armor, Combi-bolter, Force weapon, MoT, Mastery lvl 2
Troops:
9 x Thousand Sons and Aspiring Sorcerer in Rhino
9 x Thousand Sons and Aspiring Sorcerer in Rhino
10 x CSM - Aspiring Champion, Rhino
Fast Attack:
1 x Heldrake (Nidhogg) - Baleflamer
8 x Chaos Bikers - MoK, Biker Champion (PA, PF, BP)
2 x Bikers (PA, BP, CCW, Meltas)
5 x Bikers (PA, BP, CCW, Combi-bolters)
Heavy Support:
Maulerfiend (Fenrir) - PF x 2, Magma Cutter x 2
Forgefiend (Jormundgandr) - Ectoplasma Cannon x 3
Secondary Detachment: Chaos Daemons
HQ:
Bloodthirster (Surtur) - Warp-forged Armor, Lash of Khorne, Axe of Khorne, Lesser Rewards x 1, Greater Rewards x 1
Troops:
Daemonettes of Slaanesh x 10 (could replace with Plaguebearers)

Looks pretty good! Thousand Sons are a late game unit...so you need lots of scary fast moving things to get up in your opponents face to distract him from your blue babies.
This list seems to have a good amount of scary fast moving things.
Im just concerned about your heavy support. CSM heavies need redundancy. If you have a specific task in mind for your Maulerfiend, for instance, you need to take 2. If you take just 1, its going to get killed pretty soon with only AV 12, so thats why you bring a second one.

Since your sorcerer is in terminator armor, where is he going to go? I would drop to power armor and throw him in a transport, or take a bike/disk to roll with the bikers.
You don't need a power fist and melta bombs on the champ. Sure, they help for assaulting a land raider, but the fist is better in virtually every other instance. A lone combi melta is not going to cut it either when the rest of the squad cant touch heavy armor. Mass krak grenades destroy most tanks rear armor. If you want AT(which I would suggest) take 2 meltas instead of 2 flamers. You have plenty to kill troops with.
A keeper of secrets costs less with the same rewards and fits the theme, while still being no slouch in CC. Pink horrors also fit better than deamonetts, but I am no expert on Chaos Deamons so don't quote me.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

That's, partly, why I took the Forgefiend, though since that will likely sit back and shoot for support, I doubt they'll have to pay as much attention to it. The Heldrake should get some attention, though if they can't shoot it, that won't save the Mauler.

I think you're right about the bikers, at least it makes sense. I'll make those modifications. The intent with the TDA on the Sorcerer is just to make him more survivable. I have every intention of avoiding combat with him and just using him to hurl pain from a distance and support my Thousand Sons. I may still drop the armor, but that's why he's not already in a transport or on a bike. I don't know what I'd do with the points from the Armor though, to be honest.
I'll have to try the Giant out as a Keeper of Secrets, and compare it to how it is as a Bloodthirster. It's inclusion as a Bloodthirster fits Surtur more, and I know first hand how much destruction they can cause. You're right that Slaanesh would be fluffier. I mostly like Pink Horrors, on paper, but from what I've heard, they're not so great on the table top. Can anyone confirm this or give evidence to the contrary? Just seems that while they're characterful, they could be more troublesome than necessary. With the Daeomons, I'm more concerned with fitting them into the Norse theme than 40k fluff. They're really just there to more accurately portray the forces Loki brings to Ragnarok. I've also written up a list dropping the Daemons completely, but adding a Daemon Prince with MoK, Murder Sword (for WYSIWYG), and Power armor, as well as 2 x Oblits with MoT.

Thanks! I got a Dremel for the holidays I hope to return. If I do, I may use some of that to purchase the Terrorgheist model and begin that. Surtur, and Fenris conversions are both well on their way already. Awaiting my first unit of Thousand Sons from Forgeworld. Hopefully they'll ship soon.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

A unit of 11 horrors will pump out a respectable number of ranged shots (which none of the other troops can do), survive anything fired back by going to ground, and can be modeled to look like whatever you want and be perfectly fluffy. I'd go with them over the daemonettes. Heck I'd model/paint them as the literal flames of Surtur along with the Flamers.
For the Sorcerer, I'd say put him on a bike/disc with one of the biker squads. Maybe model him riding another one of Loki's freaky one-night stands.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of having the Sorcerer run around vs having him stay put?
Having the Horrors look like the fire of Surtur is a pretty neat idea. I'll admit that another reason I've not been real excited about them is that I haven't thought of a way to represent them with Norse mythology.
Now you've also got me wondering what freakishly deviant mount I can come up with for him. I think I'll be doing more research there.

I started a thread for the modeling side of it a while back but progress halted on this project so nothing came of it. I'll take WIP shots and such, and post them to that thread when there's a decent flow on some things at least.
