The Organization of the Imperial Angels is nothing like a codex chapter and boasts a massive amount of veterans, due to former ties with the adeptus mechanicum(to be explained via story)

Traditions:
The Imperial Angels' are a Chapter with no clear primogenitors. Due to the lack of tradition to carry them on high, they made their own traditions. Ones such as the Bearing of Light, where new recruits are honored to carry The Sword of Light from the Mountain of Sin to the Halls of Heaven along the Road of Judgement, a journey that lasts over three months, even for the physique of a Space Marine. The recruits are allowed nothing to sustain them, the idea being that The Sword of Light will carry them to their goal. A goal not so easily accomplished, as the nature of Halios, the Home planet of the Imperial Angels is a deathworld. Being highly toxic even to Space Marines, it is a battle of the recruits mind to accomplish their first mission as an Imperial Angel. They are to weigh the importance of their life, over the importance of the most sacred weapon possessed by the Imperial Angels

Recruitment:
The Imperial Angels like any Chapter need to maintain recruits, and for one that recruits so heavily their Chirurgeons' are constantly at work with the steady influx of aspirants. 9/10 will be refused and turned to servitors or slaves, but the ones that pass go through the most unusual recruitment process. Firstly phase one implants are introduced, and the aspirant will be set atop the Mountain of Sin, to wait and see if their body accepts the implants or rejects them. Should the body reject the implants, their body too will adorn the Road of Judgment, a testament to the power of The Sword of Light. However should their body accept them, they are then introduced the remaining organs and the training for the Arisen begins.

Geneseed:
The geneseed of the Imperial Angels is remarkably free of any deviations bar the fact that the geneseed itself matures in pairs. A normal geneseed is a single organ that is used to create a space marine. The Imperial Angel geneseed grows pairs. This ultimately increases the amount of geneseed available to the Chirurgeons.

They seem extremely religious. Do they worship the Emperor like the Black Templars do?

They worship what they remember of the Emperor, which is in fact very little. A part of the backstory which I have yet to post, is the Halios Sub-Sector is entirely non-existent to the Galaxy. Weeks after they'd been created and tasked with claiming their home world a warpstorm opened and trapped them in the Halios subsector for nearly five centuries. So the Keepers of the Light (Chaplains) instructed them on a whole bunch of things they needed to do to until their God breaks the storm and frees them. This is all a part of the backstory/ story I'll be writing. I know it looks a bit confusing now but it should make sense when I've typed it out.

Ezra stood before the Sanctum quietly. The massive obsidian statues that adorned the promenade cast shadows on the courtyard, and as Ezra looked closer he saw that each was a hero that the Keepers of Light had proclaimed about. Sanguinius, Rogal, Corax, Curze, Perturabo, Horus.. all were named on the statues. All were unknown Gods. As Ezra looked closer at each one, he smiled. Maybe one of you can explain our existence.. war cannot be all..

The thought crumbled when the ornate doors to the Sanctum swung open, their inner gears hissed and cranked into action, the hot air brushed over three figures as they embraced Halios. His knee hit the obsidian ground in reverence to the Keepers of Light, whose armour shone like the sun. Such was the ornateness of their armour that every inch had been hammered into a testament to their power and to the Light. Amos, Keeper of the Light smiled graciously and Ezra could feel his unwavering gauntlets on his shoulder pauldrons. The word was like empowerment. The word was like vindication. The word was "Rise."

He stood, before the Keepers, and in Amos' hands was the Sword of Light. "Keeper I cannot " stammered Ezra only to be interrupted by Amos. "You will carry this blade.. War is coming Ezra.. The Stranger has betrayed us.."

With confusion and anger in his heart, Ezra grabbed Light and bowed for his blessing. The Light of the Sanctum bathed Ezra, giving him the strength to carry the sword. With it he turned and marched to The Heavens to gather his Wing. An interchapter war was brewing, and the Keepers of Light chose him to carry the sword into the flames.

Why are there statues of the traitor Primarchs? The second founding that split the legions into chapters (the earliest point that your chapter could have come into existence - unless you're taking the "lost Legion" angle) occurred after the Heresy.

I like where you're going with the religious marines, it seems a bit more subdued and monastic than the Black Templar.

In response to why there are statues of traitor primarchs, the Imperial Angels have devolved in some of their world views. Because of the warpstorm that has cut them off, they no longer view the Horus Heresy as what it was. The Keepers of Light have basically planted their own ideology into the Imperial Angels. They now live in wait of God, when his light will break the storm and usher in a new era. This would be quite heretical to any facet of the imperium. But the imperium doesn't exist in the Halios subsector, nor does Chaos. It is only the Light, and distant memories of the God-Emperor that only the most senior Space Marines can remember.

If you take a look at it, it was the Keepers of Light building their own Utopia after they were trapped in the warpstorm. It is quite monastic in almost everything the Imperial Angels do outside of battle is in devotion to the Keepers. A practice that is soon to be broken by The Stanger.
