Subject: A N00b Approach to BA
|
 |
Irked Necron Immortal

Hey all! Just started playing, and have chosen the BA as my starting army. I have put together a list that I want to build and was wondering if I could get some thoughts/ constructive criticisms. Now bear in mind that I am still learning, and this is a list I envision but by no means attached to...just looking for some feedback. Thanks!
HQ - Dante
Mephiston
Elite - Furioso Dread (not sure what to outfit him with...advice?)
x2 Sanguinary Priest ( JP, chainsword)
Brother Corbulo
Troops- x1 10 man Tactical
x1 10 man Assault
x5 DC (4 w/ Bolters, 1 powerfist)
x1 DC Dread
x1 Saguinary Guard (powerfist, deathmask, chapter banner)
Heavy- 5 man Devastator Squad
I was also thinking about doing drop pods, or maybe stormraven. I am unsure about effective tanks? Unsure of points because I'm not sure what to outfit, but this is what I envision. I can't remember what the army limitations are for each section (posting this at work ) so my troops may be a bit heavy. Appreciate the time and I welcome your advice!!

Furioso with frag cannon, melta gun and magna grapple in a pod I find best.
Dump Dante and the SG unless you want to go more for fluff than competitive.
Corbulo needs a decent squad to pod in with someone like melta sternguard.
If going for DC go about 10 and give them a pod.
If going devs id advise against mls or hbs.
Im personally not a fan (along with many others) of BA tac squads, but then again there are some that are.
DC dread is nice IF gotten into combat, for which you need a raven, as anyone worth their salt will not allow that thing to get into assault otherwise.
What you could add is a couple more assault squads or scouts for scoring.
Apart from the furioso, mephiston and corbulo, id say our best units are vindis, baals and ravens.
All of this is just looking at it competitively. If you want a casual fluffy army, keep it as it is (with a few pods and getting rid of the deathmasks), as its not too bad if you equip the squads right.

HQ - Dante
Mephiston
Dante is terrible. BA HQs are overcosted, so I usually only use one. Maybe Mephy and a SoS libby.
Elite - Furioso Dread (not sure what to outfit him with...advice?)
Frag cannon and melta/heavy flamer and have it ride a pod.
x2 Sanguinary Priest (JP, chainsword)
Brother Corbulo
This list doesn't need Corbs as there is nothing for him to tank for.
Troops- x1 10 man Tactical
Gear?
x1 10 man Assault
Gear?
x5 DC (4 w/ Bolters, 1 powerfist)
On foot? DC are marginal to begin with but a totally useless on foot.
x1 DC Dread
DC dreads are AV 12. Fail. Never use them.
x1 Saguinary Guard (powerfist, deathmask, chapter banner)
Overcosted fragile unit with only 5 wounds.
Heavy- 5 man Devastator Squad
Devs are a disaster in a book with fast predators.
Unfortunately, the BA have precious few good units. It's almost impossible to make a survivable list on the first try from a codex full of trap units.

First off, thanks so far for the feedback!
I will probably never play this game super competitive. Nothing against those who do but it just isn't for me. Also, I kind of enjoy the fluff aspect of BA so take that as you will As far as tacticals and devs go, in the few games that I have played it seems like shooting is the way to go, so I didn't want to overdo assault marines. I figured the devs and tacs would be my anvil, with Corbulo being used to keep them alive. I love dreads, hence the reason for the two in the list that I have. As far as wargear for the tacs, I'm not too sure what is effective. I play one ten man tac with a plasma gun, and the sergeant has both a flamer and plasma pistol, and one missile launcher. The assaults squad I only have five of right now, so I am running one melta gun and the sergeant has a powerfist and combat shield (this guy actually held his own in CC with a six man squad of necron warriors for three entire turns before he finally died, so I feel an attachment for this guy lol)
All in all I was going for hard to kill and semi-shooty with some mobility for scoring...
I do have a librarian in terminator armor, but I do not have the storm shield for him. I also have a Reclusiarch w/ JP and an Astorath the Grim.
I wanted Dante because I like the hit and run ability he has and I love the Sanguinary Guard, so they seemed to go together well. Plus that precision drop seems really cool for that "It has to die RIGHT NOW" aspect. I have also found in my few games that a 2+ and 5+ FNP can be really frustrating to kill so...yeah.

At what point value are you aiming?
At tactical squads the best gear in my opinion is plasmacannon plasma gun and combat squad them play 3 of them and you have 3 plasmaguns and 3 plasma cannons at different targets(did i mention that plasmaguns rapid fire?)
I dont think you can take both dante and mephiston.
I think you can take either Dante with lots of sanguinary guard or mephiston with the mechanized troops. Since you enjoy the fluff and dante think about that:
HQ DANTE
ELITE SANGUINARY PREIST
ELITE FRAGIOSO WITH DROP POD
TROOPS 4XSANGUINARY GUARD
FAST ATTACK BAAL PREDATOR
HEAVY SUPPORT DEVASTATORS
FORTIFICATION AEGIS

The ultimate goal for points is around 2000 I think.
What is a fortification Aegis?
Also I have read a lot about AV12 being a fail. Why is that bad?
DC would footslog but I planned on using a drop pod or transport for them...

Dante and sanguinary guard look beautiful and are fluffy. But after playing with them you will hate them! Dante is such shame at initiative 6 he is made for killing space marine characters but with his pathetic axe mortalis he is int 1, so basically he challenges a nob with pk in combat and well he's dead. And your sanguinary guard are pathetic at surviving anything.
Imho, ba best units are : vndicators, 12'' move with 24'' range str10 ap2 ordnance= awesome, always play with 2 not just 1; stormravens expensive but can be a very effective anti air and anti armor unit; deathcompany on foot with bolters in a drop pod- decent shooting, survivable and awesome charge!
Added after latest comment, agesis defense line is a 50pt fortification that basically allows you to take 8 barricades that grant 4+ cover save and 2+ when going to ground. They can also be given a gun emplacement or a comms relay. They are ok, but can be wasted for ba as most models have a reliable 3+ save, and we are a moving army.
av 12 is bad, because it is very easy to glance to death.

The Aegis is your answer for the flyers. You put a quadgun and scouts or devas. So you have a very good long range fire supp for the sanguinary and a very good save for almost everything. Because i play BA too and i like playing Dante with sanguinary guard too i can give you a couple of hints.
Vindi is a very good vehicle but now at 6th the enemy has a tons of models to desable it eithe by glancing or by penetrating and because it has an extended side its easy to outflank them so in my opinion you pay a lot of points for something so frigile thatmight do something . Most of the games i played the vindi has survived for 1 blast. I would recomend baals because they can open up pretty much everything(even LR if you are lucky) and they offer covers for your sanguinary. Also i yould recomend land speeders with heavy flamer and multimelta. Its cheap its fast has jink and can kill everything. The sanguinary guard if you want to go for a full out assault with them you must bounce them from cover to cover to minimize casualties and with the new rules of true line of shight and focus fire its easy. Put Dante in a sanguinary guard with 2 inferbos 1 banner and 1 priest with meltabombs and power sword and you have a very good(not the best though) cc unit and you can deep strike them at melta range for the 3 infernus and destroy every thing. Think of it..

The Vindicator is not good unless you have two other tanks constantly blocking its sides. That makes it a very expensive tank indeed.
Speeders are garbage in 6th. 2HP and AV 10 just get hull pointed out too quickly. The only speeders I'd consider are typhoon speeders, as they outrange Eldar and Tau guns in general. Although not serpent shields.
Keep in mind the kind of firepower you can see. Eldar can sling 40+ S6 shots in a turn.
