The Infantry squads in an Imperial Guard platoon have the ability "combined squad" meaning you can combine multiple units of infantry to form one unit. Is it worth it?

Personally i prefer to keep mine separate. It keeps me being able to spread my fire if need be (hardly ever necessary though) and means the enemy can only kill 1 unit at a time. But combined squads can be threatening in Melee.

There are pros and cons of both ways of running them.

Blob squads:
Pros
- Better effects from orders
- You are more resistant to leadership checks as the enemy needs to kill more models to force them.
- You can get better concentration of special and heavy weapons than single squads.

Cons
- Harder to hide or get cover for,
- Can hit less separate targets.
- The whole squad can be wiped in melee.

Single Squads:
Pros
- More versatility in picking targets.
- Easier to hide.
- The enemy can only kill 10 guys max in melee or shooting.

Cons:
- Individually more fragile
- Less benefit from orders.
- Low special weapon concentration.

There's no real answer as to which is best, so just experiment and see what suits you. Personally, I like to combine them as I rely on orders a lot, but others prefer individual squads.

I`ve been thinking about blobs vs individual squads too and the answer without taking anything from paradigm`s post is what you plan to do with them.

A backfield squad filled with lascans and plasma for a firebase will work better as a blob to get maximum effect from orders. A 50 guard CC blob with a commissar to tie down a death star is useful too.

On the other hand picket units should be always be single squad and cheap to boot, their only mission in life is to screen more valuable targets and then melt when charged so the full might of the IG can be unleashed on the now exposed enemy.

So both types have their uses as long as you have a coherent plan for them, blobbing for the sake of blobbing isn`t worth it in 6th but not as useless as some other posters think.

A medium building can hold 20 people.
So, double-up and that's twice as many able to fire out of the windows. Just check how many windows there are first....

Depends on what you need. If you take some allies like inquisitors and/or allied buufers like Tigurius or Azrael - they can make an attached squad VERY tough so you want as many bodies as possible. I can tell you that 50 guardians + inquisitor with nades + tigurius or Azrael are very good at killing literally anything cept for a 2++ rerollable probably.

I'd actually caution against a 50-man blob. On any board with a decent amount of terrain, it's just too prone to getting bogged down and lacking force concentration. But the above post does have a point, blobs are one of the best ways to take advantage of passive abilities. I'd hesitate before running any blob larger than 40, though.

I use a mix from time to time. If you can get your opponent to assault a small squad and wipe them, then the big blob behind has fun withh FRFSRF.

I wouldnt go as big as 50. 40 maybe. 30 seems about right.

I advise using an inquisitor with prescience and rad grenades and your opponent will second guess charging the blob. My nids friend actually said he fears charging the blob with an inquisitor.

But if you dont want to use an inquisitor then you have to have a commissar, if you dont then dont take blobs they will die terribly.
