My Necron Warriors are standing behind ruins. A squad of SW Long Fangs are on the opposite side of the ruins and shoot through the cover with Krak Missiles. I get a 4+ cover save for being behind the ruins. What if the Long Fangs are in an elevated position instead of on the ground like my troops? Even though the ruins are between them and me but they can see directly over them, do I still get the cover save? Would their elevated position matter?

I assume that in similar fashion if there were another unit of troops between my Warriors and the Long Fangs I would still get the 5+ cover save, correct?

I believe the answer is 'Yes' because this is a game and not a real-world scenario but my erstwhile opponent believes that because literally his troops can shoot over the ruins that I should receive no cover save.

Thoughts?

That way,then left

If you're not hidden at all (obscured) and outside of the ruins (area terrain) you won't get cover

Unless you're in area terrain, the rules of TLOS take over. This means that if your models are not obscured by a terrain piece, you won't get a cover save.

So, the change in LOS being elevated eliminates the cover. What if one of my units or my opponents are between us? Same?

If the model obscures the target, the target gets a save. Otherwise TLOS prevents a save.

Thanks for the clarification.

however, if the models at the very front are obscured, they would get a cover save.

You could have 15 necron warriors without cover, but 3 just far enough that the wall obscures their thighs on down.

Those 3 would get cover saves as they are obscured.

If the model obscures the target, the target gets a save. Otherwise TLOS prevents a save.
Further to this, you would also get a cover save if the 'shot' 'travels' between two models in a different unit (Page 18, Intervening Models, middle of the first paragraph).
You would also get a cover save if the terrain in question was a Forest (page 102, Cover Save, second sentence).
Whether either of these two rules is prevented by elevation, I'm not sure (they probably are), but they are cover saves given even when there is clear LOS between firer and target.
