Hey.
Hope you guys don't mind me posting about this, but have any of you experienced the fact that even if you want to play with someone, and you know where there's a club and when they're playing, but you just can't imagine being able to find your way out to it?
I'm mostly having this issue, because I don't have a car. And even if I can take trains and busses, I am kinda nervous about taking such long trips, and planning when to take them etc...

Get a car
Get a lift.
Use public transport.
Nervous about trips? Silly. Don't be. I know they're peasant wagons, but there is nothing to be remotely nervous about. I did 4 years of uni and relied hugely on public buses. Even with my wargaming cases. As to planning, just learn time management, and keep an eye on your watch. It's not hard.
There should be no reason to fear going out and enjoying your hobby.

I use public transport to get to gaming clubs and have done for 20 years. If you play your cards right you might even be able to blag a lift home off someone going in the same direction!

Honestly, you're going to need to figure out this kind of travel to function in modern society anyway, so you might as well do it now. The only problem you're going to have to worry about with public transportation is having enough space to bring all of your models safely. If you have too many large cases you might not be able to fit them onto a crowded bus.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Well, I am personally taking a bus to my course, and it's not just a short trip. But I'm just feeling uncomfortable when I'm in a new place, and it doesn't exactly help when it's at the other side of the island. :c

You'll have to try it, at least once, and I bet that it will work out fine and you'll be wondering why on earth you were nervous in the first place
You can check on the internet about the times of busses and trains, a thing to think about with this kind of thing is not to be in a rush, don't rush yourself and then you won't cause unnecessary stress. And just remember that people use these modes of transport all the time to get to places, so it won't be hard and you can definitely do it!
In the unlikely event of it not being a good experience, you could try to analyse what went wrong, and try another trip to the gaming club.

Like anything, if you've not done it before or you've done it only a little, it can be a bit intimidating. That's normal. But the worst things likely to happen on public transport, are still not actually that bad. For example, sometimes people miss their stop on a train. That sucks. Then you have to get off, wait for a train going the other direction back again. But this is the sort of thing that life recovers from. So don't worry about things too much. Just double-check times, make sure you leave plenty of time to get where you're going rather than cutting everything to the last second, and you'll be fine.
And if in doubt on your journey, just ask someone (driver, fellow passenger, etc.). Most people are friendly. Just look at all the supportive replies you've got on here.

You'll be fine! First time can be a bit daunting but seriously give it a try. Once you've done it you'll wonder what you were afraid or worried about.
Plus you'll find a new place to game so not only new experiences, but new people, friends, etc...

I don't know how it is in Denmark , but here if your carrying large cases of stuff which there is a chance that just before the door close someone may grab one and steal it . There are whole gangs of gypsies that specilise in doing stuff like that . If the trip takes more then 20-30min, I would never take more then one case.

Christopher lee wouldn't feel uncomfortable in a new place.
Chuck Norris wouldn't feel uncomfortable in a new place.
Jack Bauer wouldn't feel uncomfortable in a new place.
Batman wouldn't feel uncomfortable in a new place.
Conclusion? Be batman. or one of the others. What's to be uncomfortable about? Strangers? Please. Plenty of them everywhere! You walk into a class of strangers, and you get on with it. These guys? Yeah, they're gamers. The odd one might smell, but let's be honest. Gamers, like folks everywhere, are generally a decent lot. Mention something about 40k or warmachine, or 'hi, I'm new, what games do ye play', or start a conversation by complimenting some one on a great looking army. Yeah, it's not hard, nor is there any reason to be uncomfortable.
Yup. this. Batman would not be a pansy. So be batman

Hehe, tell us if you do it and how it went! And also, about it being a new place, whenever I've had to go somewhere new and find some specific spot, I always check google maps, the streetview, and you'll be amazed at how easy it is once you do that. Once you're there you'll recognise things you saw on the route you looked at on the streetview

The biggest issue I find is getting the right day off of work when there are games played. "Fridays, okay." "wait, now Saturdays..." "Oh, Mondays?" "Now its Sundays?"
I take public Transportation, with a big Sabol bag. Used to have the GW suitcase. And I still don't have room for everything... But it is what we do. I've even had the privilege of having to take 2 subways to the GW Manhattan to try and find games where everyone just wanted to paint instead.

And as far as I've read myself, there's apparently no trains going at midnight, so I would end up being at a station waiting for a train at 5 am. :p

I'm not doubting that people wouldn't be friendly at this point, but it's just the transportation part.
Also, I'm at Herrestrup, and there is a bus terminal right nearby that I can walk to, so public transportation is an option.
Also also, thanks for the further input!

How long a bus ride is it? I used to take the bus/train to one game store that was a good hour away, but so long as I went with a buddy or my headphones I was good. And see if the people there have a forum or Facebook group or something they use to post games. It's easier to schedule games there than it is to try and get pickup games with strangers. It skips the whole "awkward nerds milling about asking for a dance partner" thing.

When taking public transportation, one thing you want to make sure of is that your models are in a decent case. There can be sudden stops, things can get knocked around, or people might kick them accidentally. You want something fully enclosed with padding, preferably one big case everything can fit in.

I caught PT to get to most of my clubs prior to moving to Newcastle 7 years ago (it's a 3 hour trip each way from here - and not viable anymore - so I found more local clubs). Did it for 20+ years. Trains, buses, trains and buses, got lifts with friends sometimes, got lifts home sometimes. Average travel time was 45 minutes (each way) but some were higher and some lower. One was located in the same suburb (but was more of the 'backyard club of mates' ). One of my clubs up here we HAVE to drive to as the PT options on a sunday are not good (Bus service from nearest station). First one gets me there around 10:30am but the LAST bus leaves at 2:30pm. If I didn't have inlaws in that town (or some other friends), I wouldn't have joined that club. The other club is so local that I don't even need to use PT to get to it. It's a 5 minute walk (5 blocks), including 2 road crossings. For ease of access, though, it IS located adjacent to the local railway (direct line down to Sydney) so that others can also get to it easily. As to why I am in both clubs ... Apart from my fellow gaming nerds, we have access to beer. We're all over 18 (legal drinking age) so that's not an issue. The club venue's own rules keep troublemaking non-nerdgamers out, and we get occasional curious people coming in for a look-see, and then they refer their friends to us.

Streetview is very useful indeed...
My club is ideally situated in a town i go to reguarly, its a bit of a walk from the bus station but i don't mind. I usually get a lift but i can get there and back on the bus, if we have an event on a Saturday (the regular day is friday) i nick one of those large seats at the front, pushchair pushers don't tend to be up at something to 9 on a Saturday morning! Though on the way back i try to nick the back seats as there is plenty of room for the 'luggage' at least i catch one bus there and back...
I have the opposite issue to the OP I have several clubs i woudl like to attend but the other 2 require a set of my own wheels, but that is in the future
personally i've never had issues on public transport, you get the odd shifty type later at night but thats about it really, anbd no the shifty type is not me either
