Ok so I was looking through 40k art just today and was surprised when I noticed Mk7 armour in the cover art for The Flight of the Eisenstein. (Shown below)
Now I might be wrong but I didn't think these marks existed at the time of the Heresy...
I know most legions have Mk4 or earlier, some Mk5, but I haven't heard of any later marks being used
Any ideas? Cheers

That isn't MK 8- just him having an additional gorget on his neck. MK 8 'Errant' has a much higher gorget.

I wouldnt pay much attention to the armour or equipment shown n any of the HH covers, the artists have mainly gone for artistic licence over the actual fluff (much like the tabletop models themselves). Many of the other HH book covers also have similar discrepancies, such as the grey armour for the luna wolves on the front of "Horus Rising" or the very M41 looking bolters on the front of "False gods".

Also notice though, the events on the cover never take place in the book either.

I was looking more at the knees actually that's where I first noticed it. But yeah you're right

I've noticed this too. People say the guy on this cover is meant to be Garro, but the only person I can think of it representing is Solun Decius

No, it's not Garro. IIRC, it's that one guy that was infected with Nurgle's Rot who used a power fist or somebody of the likes.

Also, the best way to identify Errant armor- does it look like the Astartes inside is peeking out armor that looks a size too large? Then it's Errant.

Like I said - I realize it's not errant and like I also said - Solun Decius

That pic isn't even 'true' MK8 either!

Anyway, MKVI was certainly in the Heresy, and I think MKVII might have even made it in right at the end.

MKVIII is the only real 'new' mark of PA for the Imperium, but it was quite a ways after the Heresy before it shows up.

Well, that's just the gigantic gorget, which is the most iconic bit of the new armor. Otherwise it has a vastly different breastplate and legs.

I have to say, the cover is rather suggestive of Mk VII being present in that Era - the generator styles on the fallen/prone Imperial Fists, the polyn (kneepad) style of the two Death Guard Warriors and the breastplate of the furthest Death Guard warrior all bear hallmarks of being Mk VII armour. That said, I have to say that it's purely artistic licence. It's firmly established in lore that at the start of the HH, Mk IV was the most advanced armour in circulation, with Mk VI only in it's design stages. Mk V armour isn't a true 'designed' Mark - rather it is the formalisation of a conglomeration of various ad-hoc fixes, adaptations and generally similar upgrades that were applied to the ageing wargear of the Legions (mostly Loyalists from what I can gather). Certainly, Mk VII was only in production during the very final stages of the HH - way after the events of The Flight of the Eisenstein.

Mark VII armour tends to have the Aquilla on the chest plate, and that mark only made it as far as marines on terra and luna during the heresy, and it was the later stages of it.

@endlesswaltz123 - The aquila, at least in post-heresy Mk VII suits, I gather would be mostly decorative. Initially, the wearing of the Palatine Aquila on the chest was the privilege of the Emperor's Children alone. However, come the Horus Heresy, the Aquila was adopted by all Loyalists in an effort to provide a tactical identifier between marines. I'm gathering that by this point, the traitors hadn't spent long enough time devoted to Chaos to have become seriously afflicted by mutations, and had been too preoccupied fighting to have vastly embellished weapons and armour - hence an identifier would be needed.

By M41, IMHO, the aquila is purely cosmetic. The sheer difference between CSM and SM are so manifest that it's obvious which side is firing on you. That's just my take on it though.

Well, there isn't room for the aquila on certain armour types, the MK VII seems to have been designed to incorporate it, having said that, my other point still stand, The MKVII was developed on mars late in the heresy and it really didn't get much further than Terra.

Good point about the use of it for identification though, I never really thought of it like that, though the legion armours were enough in most circumstances to establish the enemy... Though, it wouldn't be such a safe bet if you were dealing with those pesky alpha legion operatives,

I'd say the armored abdomen section and the modified wrist guards and shin guards are all equally important parts of MKVIII armor.

They are, after all, the things that get consistently left out of any plastic MKVIII attempt by GW to date!

Until now. Finally, they have parts for proper Mk VIII Errant- Tac squad sergeant chest now has the armored cables with the gorget. Sternguard have a Mk VIII torso with the gorget and some hip armor plates. Also a set of legs that actually has the armored ankle joint disc.

And the wrists too?

This is, seriously, great news!
