Altough been a player since around 1996, only recently I have found a consistent wargaming group near me, so I have removed all the dust from my old space marines (and got some new ones) and begun to play again.
It's a tremendous shock to change from 3rd to 6th edition, I must say. I hope to contribute as much as I learn from everyone around here.

Altough I'm not what you could call a good strategist, I make up with my terrain design skills (wich are NOT related to my paint hability...still developing that with the new group)
Here are a pair of examples of what I've been adding to their (our) terrain collection. Some modular walkways and a radar dish. Of course, having a laser cutter means it's easier to do certain things, like repeatable structures and all ^^U

Ignore the white cables, they just hold the curved part while glue dries.

In case you wonder if those hold well enough, well...have you heard of the tetrabrick test?

Sweet stuff!

And, of course, welcome to Dakka Dakka!

Having your own laser cutter must be nice...

Thanks!

I woiuld say that lasercutting at home is, at the least, addictive. Even tough my machine takes it's time to do those detailed parts, the ease of design in the computer is well worth it. However, in the long run, materials are not free, and laser requires maintenance pieces, so one must stop building everything and become more selective of what you really are going to use. (that goes for the radar dish...it looks okay, but does not offer cover or being directly useful at any level)

Who has a radar dish?! It's really cool!! It could be an objective for many many games!!
I'd love to tinker with a laser cutter! Shoot you could probably make a bit of money selling terrain right? Or is it less industrial and more a hobby laser?

The stairs to the upper radar platform are awesome! If you were to lessen the angle, then change the individual stairs angles, it looks like you could actually place figures on the stairs as they negotiate them. Have you made any sci-fi walls that could be fastened together to make buildings etc? Man I'd love to see some sci-fi walls, little keypads next to the doorways, maybe even create sliding doors. I have somelaser cut Ork buildings I purchased from The War Store, these buildings came from an Australian company I think, they made neat stuff and now I can't find them any longer.
Those Ork buildings are in the line up to be completed here soon...They'll make nice terrain for raids on Ork territory.

Just an idea... you could post a do-it yourself terrain thread using laser cutters...

Anyway, welcome aboard Dakka! Keep making cool stuff, and posting the photos please, they are really awesome!

Thanks, I just go along designing.

As for the stairs, I made them so a standard mini base could slot in easily. But I find that most of the time, you either get on top, or don't, but not in the middle. Let's say it's my take on vertical metal stairs you can see in most industrial environments and terrain, looking good, but you don't use them really.

As for walls, I'm working on compatible modules for the already made terrain. They will be covered front and back, so they look solid. Also, unlike the walkways, those wall modules have magnets on the sides, so once in place, they act as a single wall.

And as for selling...well, I haven't given it much thought. There are tons of companies out there already making lasercut terrain and scenery, and I don't know if I can bring something they haven't (or can't) so someone can say "I want that". I just have fun making tons of terrain and especially interlocking pieces. XD
