Greetings, all.
Woe betide my wallet as I attempt to create a Night Lords warband of some aesthetic appeal and tabletop functionality. Night Lords have always been my favorite legion, from the kickass lightning-warped armour, to the hit-and-run surgical terror strikes, to the crucified corpses hanging above their comfy "I went to Terra, and all I got were these crappy bedsheets" emblazoned beds. Jokes aside, every warrior is an out-for-himself badass intent on murder, pillage, and terror.
Where I come from, armies are typically taken in high points amounts and games take a fair amount of time. I've written an army list that I will cover in another thread elsewhere.
But before I embark on this endeavor, I was hoping for a bit of last minute brainstorming for the last little army tidbits.
Many of my army's units will have MoS, but merely for the game benefits - fluffwise, they have no attachments in favor of any particular god. The main leader of the army is a Daemon Prince, which I intend to do a bit differently: I like the idea of Night Lords being powerful, but wiry. That is to say, for an army of giants, they aren't necessarily bulked out crazily. So, My daemon prince will be wearing mostly power armour a bit upscaled, just on a larger scenic base.
I plan on greenstuffing DE Scourge Wings to the backpack of the Chaos Lord from the Dark Vengeance kit, and in turn greenstuff that onto the unique chestpiece from the Sons of Horus Torso set, pictured in the center on the forgeworld site. I plan on up scaling the bottom of the torso along with the Elongated Running Legs from the Possessed sprue. The head I'm kind of juggling around with. My current favorite head is the Warp Talon Champion Horned Head, but another helmet may look better. I change my mind alot. Which is why I can't decide on weapons; a Daemon Prince just has a close combat weapon, which leaves a rather wide choice. Thus far, I've nailed down 4 choices that I feel would be suitable awesome.
1. Plasma Pistol Wielding, No Cares Giving, Hellfire Raining Gunslinger.
Basically, he will wield 2 plasma pistol, with two leather holsters on his torso, as well as two more slung on his legs. The idea being, he shoots so many times and pwns so many Loyalist punks that he burns out his pistols quickly, leading to a need for another. Or it blows up. Or he throws it and gets 10 points on a headshot. Or he trips and it falls down a chasm. You can never have too many pistols. A somewhat fluffy option, picking this option will secure his place in my fluff as a trained Moritat from the Heresy.
2. "But he has an axe!" ..."But he has Bud Light..."
Dual Wielding Axes. Tomahawk style. My least favorite, and least imaginative of the 4, but could be fun. I've seen dual axe wielders out the caboose modeled before though, and I would only pick this if everything else fails. Or you pay me.
3. Lightning Claws
Cause why not? True Night Lords fashion hunting tools. Oh, you have a sword? cool, I have 10. On my fingers. But, even with the new warp talon kits, I have yet to find a single pair of lightning claws from FW or GW that I like. And then I found Sci Fi Claws from Zealot Miniatures. Good lord, these look great! Forearm mounted, retractable, dual long talons for bunching through lenses, exposed necks, and that one space communist who tripped over his pulse rifle running away. If you haven't seen them, search for them on Google. They're pretty cool. If I go with the pistols, I will probably use the retracted set for his forarms anyway, cause point things.
4. Poseidon is my daddy.
A Trident. Cause why not? Can't you imagine a winged Night Lord dropping into a room of people, decapitating 3 with a horizontal slash, spearing another through the chest on the follow-through, and then launching it, javelin style, pinning the last, fleeing target into a wall? Yeah, you can. I can too. But the lance from the Chaos Knights isn't really doing it for me, so there would have to be a bit of kit bashing involved in this one. Potentially the most fun of the 4.
So I beseech you, slayers of the dogs of the False Emperor, bless me with your thoughts on it.
WIP thread to be raised upon my first round of purchases.
Short Story regarding fluff to be published among the forums soon, currently at 32 pages on Word.

Claws! Super cool right? Google Carcharadons if you want to see them on a marine.

Center one for the torso. May have to change if going Pistol route.
I trust you all can find the aforementioned backpack, scourge wings, warp talon helmet, and possessed legs by yourselves.
Cheers!

Out of the options presented, Dual axes seem the least Night Lordy to me. I mean, we're about speed so on, eviscerating the foe and leaving their bloodied remains to stir fear and terror in the hearts of the survivors. Axes are more... Word Bearers, IMO. Or those yoyos in the World Eaters
Dual pistols? Sure. And those not- LCs are sweet as hell. Trident... ok, I can go with that. I think the first two are more fitting for - let's say, "typical" - Night Lords, but I'd personally love to see what you can do with the trident.

Lightning claws would be the most fitting out of those options, but giving him a Chain Glaive would make more sense than any of those listed options.

@Liquid:
Yeah, dual axes seemed a bit meh to me, but I thought of him just hatcheting suckas in the head and moving on, maybe throwing it to pick off a running enemy and scooping it up again as he keeps his momentum.
Pistols just seems badass. I don't know if you've seen that one Assassin's Creed 4 trailer where he has those holsters on his chest, and two more guns on his legs, but thats where the inspiration came from. I could dig it.
Those lightning claws are a bit fragile looking for my warp talons *GASP* Yes, I'm going to use warp talons, sue me. But, I thought for a Daemon Prince, perhaps they could be bone growths, kind of like Black Dragons? And just spear people. And IDK about the trident, maybe less trident like but more elaborate badass spear, I saw a picture of some video game character, final fantasy I think, with a wicked lance and thought that would look pretty cool.
@Wyzilla: Lightning claws are indeed awesome, honestly I only really like the ones I linked above. All of my warp talons are going to have chainglaives though, as "counts as" LCs as well as being viable for a Legion list, which I am hoping to model these guys semi-after so that I can proxy both without being too unfair to either in terms of modeling. It may work, it may not, but I'll try. But that being said, there is an abundance of chain glaiving going on, and I thought the daemon prince should be a bit more distinctive. Automatically Appended Next Post: It's pretty much between the Claws and the pistols for me now, to which I have several ideas.
1. Moritat (Magnetized)
Just go with the pistols. This makes him interchangeable between being a DP for CSM and a Moritat for Legion. Also, it's badass.
CAN SWAP WITH:
2. Claws
Just claws. Why not? They're pretty awesome looking.
_______________________________________________
3. Claws with pistols.
The claws are built to be modeled on the forearms of a miniature, with the potential of freeing up the hands for other stuff. Maybe these are what actual assault marines with lightning claws use. How else are they gonna throw them 'nades? But seriously, he could be holding the pistols. Judging on the curve of the blades / length of pistols however, this may look silly and backfire. Who's gonna take this guy seriously if he drops his pistols by accident every swipe, or shoots off the tips of his bone growths every time he fires his weapon? Only Tzeentch. Just as planned.
or my new favorite:
4. Incorporate said Plasma Pistols into the Gauntlets.
This would run the added bonus of having him being playable with a Legion list as a Moritat with a cleanliness problem, or just a lightning claw Praetor. But for 40k, he could have some badass name for his double lightning spear gauntlets that also shoot plasma at you. Win win?
If you look at the website's product listing page, the bottoms appear to be flat, for a possible mounting of the plasma weapons. Or in between the blades as well.
or
5. Make 2 models and shut up.
Self explanatory.

I'd say take the Gunslinger. Why? Dual wielded (is it wielded or weld or I dunno?) pistols aren't present enough in 40k compared to how badass they are. Even more pistols are even more badass. Okay maybe I'm spoiled by Tomb Raider.

Nah man.
You take a Space Marine Assault squad, two of the Ppistols? One on the left, one on the right. Dual wielding for all!
