Hello! I am looking for my first airbrush kit. I do not know anything really about starting. Basically I would be using it for a base coat and infantry AND tanks (but might try to do more detail work) . Can someone help me find one?? I know I prolly cannot get a set for 100-150, but if we can find one I would be grateful!
Thanks!

The Badger Patriot 105 is a excellent starting brush, it will shoot just about anything without too much hassle and last time I looked on Amazon it is about $50 at the time. But for detail work not so much, I am sure it is possible in the right hands but for me I think im just gonna use it for thin coats of primer and basecoating/varnishing.
Then for a compressor you could go really cheap and get one at harbour freight for like $40 I think but if you get the badger and this air compressor you will either need a badger adapter or a badger hose and jerry rig it together.
For how I jerry rigged mine I used a adapter that came with the compressor to hook the hose that came with the compressor to my badger hose.
Like this.

Mate just grab a 20 buck generic .3 or .2 mm dual action gravity feed. Spend the rest on a decent compressor with a tank. You might want to look into a quick release and extra moisture trap as well. You can get a decent setup for a bill fifty no problem.

Forgive me if this sounds like advertising. When I was looking to get into airbrushing, I found that Hobby Lobby sometimes runs a coupon for 40% off one item a day. They put it online and you have to show it to the cashier, but it saved me a bundle. They actually have it up right now and for the next few days.
With the coupon, I was able to get a Windstorm air compressor (with moisture trap) and a dual action iWata for less than $200 total (had to buy on two separate days).

Awesome, welcome to airbrushing!
The patriot 105 is an excellent starter airbrush, - it is sturdy and quality made - it is also does not have a small needle size, which is a precision tool - but can lead to frustration to new users.
There are TONS of airbushing resources already on dakka.
Once ready, do a quick search - you will find HUNDREDS of posts that people have already taken time to type out (and even make videos as well) - so a tiny bit of searching will fine all of this.
You will find posts on everything from paint selection, hose fittings and various methods.
best of luck!

Got to agree about just getting a cheap generic brush first, I got the compressor and airbrush setup posted above for Christmas, and a Veda wd-180 dual gravity feed aswell all in all it came to £102.
The compressor is great, really quiet and the Veda has had no problems yet.
Even had a go spraying metallics with the cheap airbrushes that came with the compressor to great success. Automatically Appended Next Post: Will probably end up upgrading to a badger or iwata in June for my birthday but what I have now is great for learning the ropes

I have a patriot 105 and a hpcs.
Both are excellent. The patriot is slightly more forgiving than the HP, but both are very good.
IN that set, you get three brushes - more than likely those brushes are not of very good quality, plus do you need those three?
I would go with either the patriot or the HPCS.
Also, did you do a search on for "buying an airbush" yet?

+1 for the Badger Patriot 105 as a starter.
You get good quality at a very reasonable price (got mine from Amazon for about $69!) and it is a rather forgiving piece of equipment that is easy to maintain. Just watch out for the exposed tip!
Using a cheapie may lead to frustration...but you might get lucky and score a decently machined one..

Oh and don't forget a cleaning station for your brush and get a respirator, the respirator is your call as it has been debated if it is really necessary but if it were me I would fit that in your budget.
And for a cleaning station I would get the Iwata one that has a little holder mounted on the bottle, with those two you could be looking at another $50ish towards your budget.
Also be sure to get some cleaner and lube =) I just use Windex to clean and I use Paasch's airbrush lube. (Lube might not be necessary but I like the smooth feel when I use it)
I am thinking this is why I cheaped out on the compressor... Because with all the accessories it got real expensive real fast.

Good advice... but actually having what might be considered adequate p.p.e gear in the spray industry is going to cost far more than the airbrush and compressor over time. say you spend £150 on a small compressor and a cheapish airbrush. And then spend £30-40 on a half mask respirator rated for organic solvents, woop good to go... for about 30-45 days then you need another mask, and another and another and another... The replacements is where most people go wrong.
The filter element in the mask is already degrading as soon as you open the sealed package and it comes into contact with the air.
~ now I'm not saying dont use a mask, far from it. theyre good to have hehe. Theyre good enough that you could spray a can of lacquer out in a confined space, and stand there with the mask on not being able to smell or taste it.
But actually possessing a functional one all year round is pretty costly, its doesnt matter if your spraying or not, they wear out anyways... so buying one and using it once in a month or two isnt very cost effective. For those who feel they really need to wear one, its probably best to plan to do lots and lots of spray work in a short time and buy a mask specifically for that.
