If you want to make a Night Lords list, then you're gonna need lots of Raptors. Anything that causes Fear is useful really. The aweesome thing is that Raptors are quite strong and always a good choice to take, either for tank hunting or CC.

In the spoiler is a good 1500pts list with two suitable Raptor squads (The Raptors have MoS, which I know isn't fluffy but can be explained fluffily through sheer amounts of training. I also have some decent anti-air with the Aegis Defence Line with a Quad-gun.

thanks for the list! i like it and will probably try that out. I also have dark vengeance, is anything from that useful? I'm guessing the chosen are good. I read the helbrute isn't really useful, but I don't know about the cultist and I'm guessing the leader is good.

Cultists are always useful. I usually run them in MSU to walk them on in the last turn or two to claim objectives. Running massive blobs of them with MoK is so fun it's unreal, but that's far from fluffy for Night Lords. The Helbrutes CAN be useful actually; depends on how you use it, and what you load it out with. The chosen are situational, not amazing. And the Lord is pretty me, better as a converted objective marker.

Looks like I'm going to be getting some more cultist then
For the helbrute I haven't seen them on GW website, so i only have the one in dark vengeance. Did GW stop selling the helbrute?
So basically the only useful items from dark vengeance is the cultist and the helbrute depending on how its used.

The Helbrute model is only in DV, you pretty much have to convert one from one of the pre-existing Dreadnought models. I prefer that option though, the Helbrute is a horrendous model. All the models are useful (The chosen are better put to use as champions for CSM squads) to some extent, though not what your looking for.

I think it would be cool to take Be'Lakor as well! He's a daemon prince. you could use a model like this for him

http://hitechminiatures.com/null/product/info/91

He fits the night lords theme because he reduces the leadership of everyone by 1 for moral checks. great in combo with fear. Also if someone fails a moral check he gets a warpcharge, so he feeds of your opponents fear! Hes 350 points of ass kicking.

Heres my list suggestion, no better or worse than anyone elses, just an idea:

Be'Lakor (Warlord)

4 10 man csm squads in rhinos with 2 plasma guns each

2 5 man raptor squads with 2 melta guns each

10 warp talons

thats 1700 points

Also make sure you check out FWs new night lord raptor models. They just came out.

Can't really help you making a night lords list, but I can say maybe get ahold of the 2x lightning claw chosen from the DV set. I always feel they would make a pretty cool looking night lord squad all painted up, fluffy too (I think).

As far as you being a new player and wanting a good list, I recommend trying a nurgle-like list. From what learned, they are pretty forgiving of mistakes. Typhus, plague marines, oblits, zombies and heldrake.
Remember, you can always get the models and paint the you want (night lords) and use them to proxy when playing with friends to venture into new strategies and future purchases/lists.

Newer player, but have been stomped enough times to know what works and what doesn't as far as CSM go

I agree with changerofways on Be'Lakor; he's excellent, and as a nice fluffy bonus, knows all of the Telepathy spells. So if you have a large nasty deathstar of raptors, then you could cast Invisibility and laugh your arse off as fire is focused on the deathstars instead of troops.

I also agree with p8ba1141ife; if you want something easy to learn the rules with, go Nurgle. VERY, VERY stron, and hard to make a mistake with.

So does every CSM Chapter have its own set of rules? or is it for the chaos god? becuase i thought all CSM played the same.

There are models for each god, there's a black legion supplement with special rules and wargear for already existing models, and then there's vanilla CSM which can be called anything, like night lords, iron warriors, or whatever you want.

They should have added Legion/Warband tactics in my opinion. But it's pretty much like changerofways said, there's cult troops, the Black Legion supplement and then with vanilla CSM, do what thou wilt.

Sounds like the best place for you to start is by picking up the CSM Codex and giving it a serious read-through. You basically need one if you want to really look at playing CSM, if you don't have already.

ThePlaguedWarsmith's 1500 list looks like a pretty decent way to play it, especially if you aim for telepathy/biomancy with the Sorcerer.
