Subject: Bad Moon Walker Army - WIP. Help?

Hello all,
I have finally built up enough courage to share some WIP pictures of my much ignored Bad Moon Walker Army.
Hopefully, with some insight and if I am lucky, some encouragement from here, I might get motivated and start painting these guys again...or be put off for life and never post again, one of the two, hehe.
Time to see if this works, with any luck I will have attached (via the attachments button) a picture of my stompa and three pictures of a Mek that I am using as the base of the army.
As it stands, I have models to cover Three Big Meks, six killa kans, three Deff Dreads, one Mega Dread, one Mekka Dread and one Stompa and this is what I am aiming to get painted sometime soon...ish, with help and support from the people here, or at least thats the idea.
PS: If this does not post pictures can someone please be so kind as to lend me a clue as to how it is done?
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all help.

First off let me be the first to say how awesome your paint jobs are! And that Mek! Not only do I love his stance, but his whole outfit is frickin awesome! I am truely in love with the fade on the powerklaw.
But can I just say your photos could use a little improvement they seem almost misty or foggy! Its a real shame as I think your models have an amazing vibe. So put some more pics up please!
Anyway back to the paintjob Yeh the PK fade is really really nice, I think im gona have to steal that idea as I am about to start painting my horde in the next couple weeks Can I ask how you achieved it? I assume its an airbrush? or lots of layering? I also really like the skin tone you've achieved, the pale look is really nice in comparison to the typically comic green skin classic orks have. Fancy sharing that one too? Infact, fancy sharing all your secrets with moi? )
I love the way you created the ork skull pattern on the stompa, your sparcity (thats a word?) of yellow is quite refreshing and gives the model some nice little eye-catchers.. Only thing would be that the stompa looks possibly a little clean, or atleast that it hasn't seen much killy-killy time.
But you should definitely continue with your BM walker army! ork vehicles have so much scope for play and fun! and with a reasonably low model count with all walkers you can avoid the bordom of mass infantry painting

Wow, thank you for the kind words, I was really scared about posting but you have made me feel very welcome.
To try and answer some of the questions, the powerklaw was going to be airbrushed but then I saw a friend of mine drybrushing some of his ork bikers and I realised that I had not done any drybrushing in years, so I went at it and that is how I got that fade glow thing there. I also feel that the stompa could do with more battle damage and blood and stuff, I added some blood to the klaw / blade thing but I am still unsure on how to dirty up the rest of the model at the moment so I have put it to one side.
I am trying to work on the picture quality but as it stands I am new at it and using an ipad so I am unsure on how much room there is to move.
Today I started painting two of my deff dreads, one in a very green tinted yellow and one using the really bright bad moon yellow. I wasnt sure of the results I was getting so I put them down and decided to paint a killa kan somewhere in between working upto golden yellow but not much further. Then I tried out some rust and battle damage to see how that went.
Here are the results, I think it is border line OTT myself, thoughts?
Also, got bored of painting yellow and metals so I painted up two grots as well to change things up. This is what I got.

Your stuff looks great! I agree about the Klaw, and I add to it that I love the glow on the Kan lens.

Maybe some rust on the buzzsaw. Or any other traces of actual use. looks a little bit too clean, as if the old, rusty dread just looted home depot...

Those again are looking really good
In terms of recommendations:
Build a photobox google it, very easy small box that will give you a good improvement to your photos for not a lot of actual effort needed it will allow us to get a better look at the details and colours, as the light can drastically change what a model looks like
Second, Id say if your airbrushing have a look at the salt and hairspray weathering technique! Its a fantastic way that is perfect for ork vehicles. Its not only pretty damn fast compared to say sponging, but can give you a nice way to achieve a more grainy rusty look I am currently finishing off a last trukk before I use this technique to paint up about 6 vehicles.
If you dont quite like that technique id have a look at say sponging, weathering pigments or any of the other methods available.
But anyways, to the praise
I really love the fade and shading done on all of your yellows, they look pretty damn nice. Can I ask what techniques you used? I love the grots and again the skintone is awesome! the board and diagram is a lovely touch. something id never thought of but definitely a top idea
Keep the work coming! actually making me wana put down my modelling and get some painting done

Hi, back again, today I think I finished off the two deff dreads, one a dull, green tinted yellow and one in the bright bad moon yellow. I also dug up the 'walker' support units that inspired me to start this army and I have taken a picture of them too. It all feels like its starting to come together.
Went to my local Games Workshop store today and chatted to the manager there about a few things and picked up some more paints I was running low on. He saw some of my models in the flesh so to speak and suggested that once I have them all done I should take them all down there so he can put them on display in one of the cabinets...I was very taken aback by this, the whole idea seams very humbling to me. Maybe, if I can get these to a standard I think is worthy, I will, but not sure at the moment.
Anyway, this photo / light box idea you mention Solar Shock, I have just done a quick look-up on it and yes, top idea Sir, it might help as the deff dreads have some wonderful work on weathering and the dull green tinted one has some fantastic bronze work that when I look at it I think someone else must have done as it looks amazing yet you can barely see it in the photos (its front left wrist cuff for example, hardly see it in the pic yet in real life it really pops and looks amazing, everyone in store commented on it). Also, a lot of the colours seem so dull in the photos compared to how they are in real life. Clearly this needs some work and I will be reading up on this further, thanks for the idea, I really appreciate it
PS: As for the salt and hairspray technique, yes, I know about this, use it a lot with enamel paints as it works wonders when I paint the tanks and Robots I normally do. I own a copy of the 'Luca' Video from 'miniature mentor' where he goes over this in great detail, I love it, but I have found it to be a bit less effective when used with water based paints, instead of 'flaking' it tends to 'blend / dissolve' more and does not look quite right to me. Not tried the sponge technique in ages, might give it a go, cheers

Yeh that is one of the major flaws of pictures Only one angle and not always truely representatitive. But thats awesome to hear that they want them on display! hopefully thats a good incentive to get some more painting done
Ive been totally unable to see any sort of damage or wear on your models, but in your latest photos I can begin to see it on the shoulder pads. Perhaps some detail shots of your worn areas?
Can I ask how you achieve your fleshtones on your models?

Right, its the big day, about an hour before the DUNLOP 24H DUBAI endurance race starts. I have my supplies of food and drink in, phones turned off, people kicked out, the house is mine and everything is locked down, just me, a nice collection of models to be painted whilst watching and listening to the race, this is going to be a good 24 hours, I can feel it
Solar Shock: The flesh tones have been painted using Camo Green as a base and then building up and around from there by lightening and darkening the original colour with yellows or reds. The elbow joints, lips, knuckles, knee caps etc have a nice watered down red applied to them in several very thin layers, almost glazes really, mostly with say scab red or red gore. Oh, yes, I am still on GW's original paint names so not sure what they are called now as apparently they have had two name changes since I brought the mega paint set about 8 years ago, sorry.
I also use various glazes and washes that I have made myself
(Example: Antelope Brown by Daler Rowney acrylic artists ink mixed up with some Galeria Acrylic medium flow improver and Galeria Acrylic Mediums Matt Medium or Liquitex's Matte Medium and stored in a nice lock top bottle)
I hope that helps yes?
Anyways, here my desk, ready to go and I hope to get a long way into completing this project by the time the race concludes, its been a mad crazy week of painting so far

Hello Peeps, Im back, more painting has happened
Da Kriimson barun, yes, those two grots are from Forgeworld, they come as part of the "ORK MEK BOSS BUZZGOB (product code : IA-ORK-I-001)" that I purchased to be one of my two HQ choices for this army, the other being a big mek with shock attack gun to which I added a Kromlek head as I hate the GW one.
As for the painting, I lost tonnes of hours and got loads done, here are some quick pics, I will take more (read as 'better') pics when I get some time, right now I got a busy week coming up which is why I wanted to spend all of last week painting.

Thanks for the info on the fleshtones I need to get into using some lighter washes to bring a little more colour to some of models I will definitely give a very light red a go.
As for the rest, looking really sick can I ask what the point of the watermark is? I don't quite get what it is? is it simply an added detail or was it then used later? Also! How the hell is your desk soooo tidy?! I spend hours clearing my desk only for it to be totally covered in crap within 10-15 minutes Think I am in need of a nice big desk like that :(

Hi guys, thanks for comments, really appreciate it, keeping me motivated!
The desk is not tidy, or so I am told, but the hobbyzone Professional Paint Station (centre of pic) does help keep the mess down a tad as does the hobbyzone Large Paint Stand (right of pic), I would be lost without them now, got so used to them
erm....the watermark....I dont know, got bored, didnt know what to do at that particular moment in time so I did something creative and unplanned to add a little something to my model and to get my brain working again as it had stalled. Therefore I made a Bad Moon icon cut out and very lightly sprayed some brown and black mixed paint around the template to create a watermark / some detail to go over the boring metalics that I had spent hours and hours individually shading slightly different colours. None of it really shows when you stand about 6feet back but you can see it when up close and I really do love doing stupid stuff like that, makes me happy.
Anyways, I have really tried hard to get some good pictures done in a vain attempt to actually be able to show some of these little details and colour mixes to you guys...not sure how well it has worked, still looks faded and not too sharp to me...compared to how they appear in real life anyways, but bar going out and bribing a friend of a friend who happens to be a professional photographer to take some pics not sure I can get them much better, sorry :(

Hi, been way too busy to do much and due to a new job I am going to have to move, therefore I think I am going to have to sell some of my models and unfortunately for me I think this Bad Moon 'Walker' army is one of the groups that are going to have to go
If anyone here is interested, I am listing it on ebay along with some other items I need to let go. If I am allowed to post it here, here is the link (if I am not, sorry, I did look around to check for rules but could not find anything that we not allowed too)

Thanks again for all of the support, I really appreciated it. Once things settle down a bit I might be back to ask more dumb questions and pick peoples brains again

WOW!!! Pinky I'm blown away by this beautiful army, all I can say is I would love it if you kept this thread going. I don't know what your future plans are for this army, but I will be keeping an eye out. I was really worried about starting a thread here to, but the DD community is always really supportive and give great feedback. It would be a joy to face your orks on the battle table, any clues on what might come next? Your painting desk is great to, very like mine, my actually painting area gets smaller and smaller as the desk fills up. However I refuse to believe its always that tidy
Once again, great stuff.

Thanks Bronzefish and Brother Ectus, really appreciate it.
As for whats next, got to clear house out and move to a new home for a new job so having to get rid of most of my stuff, gaming and otherwise :(
I am keeping two ork models I love and refuse to part with and I am going to keep my Alpha Legion army but everything else needs to go due to a lack of space but needs must.
Once I am settled I am sure I will work something out and manage to make deals with myself to start a new ork army somehow and I will post here as it has been an amazing experience, so much support and helpful tips etc

Thanks for all the support, I appreciate it.
Quick question, does anyone know of any painting masterclasses, tutorials, meetings etc by skilled painters (definition of skilled is somewhere near the level people such as Karol Rudyk, Ana, Corvus, Ctan, the brush brothers, the cursed monkey etc) in the UK?
I seemed to have reached a certain skill level and got stuck there, I am not progressing or developing, I really feel I need some face to face assistance to grow again.
I have surfed the net and not had much joy. I have watched many videos, been to many painting sites, I have read and watched so much on colour theory and I have been to several art classes run locally but I really feel stuck right now, which is annoying as I really do enjoy painting, it brings me so much pleasure, I can lost in it, but I want to improve.
Any help would be gratefully received.
