Subject: Why don't people like Tyranid Warriors or Ravagers?

With the release of the new Tyranid Codex, one of the things that has been bugging me was all the vocal dislike of Warriors and Ravagers on Dakka. Why is that? I understood why people did not like them in the past: ID was so common due to mass amounts of strength 8 being available. But hasn't the meta changed? We rarely see long fangs, Missle launchers, powerfists, or Assault Terminators with Marines and Eldar, Necron and Tau Armies are mostly spamming strength 6-7 firepower. IA Riptides have access to a powerful pie plate and Sky Rays could be and issue, but it seems to me that this is the best meta environment that t4 multi wound models have had in a long time.
Am I missing something? Because the combination of cheaper MCs and horde units makes it seem like a great chance to give them a spin again.

They're great for taking pressure off of the big bugs, however, they aren't durable enough to stick around. I wish they were. They just cost too many points for their purpose. 20 points each, or t5/2w for 30 pts would be better. Automatically Appended Next Post: And Raveners... again, they're too many points for a 'dies to any shooting whatsoever' unit.

I think with venomthropes movinf to shrouded they got a pretty decent boost. Now they are rocking a 3+ cover reliably(from intervening units).
I Ran them in fifth and did not have many problems with str 8. I just had a bunch of big bugs to draw off the fire and surprise surprise they survived.

I dunno there seems to be less S8 running arround in this edition. maybe they will make a comback
Also warrior spam can be good. I have something like 6 raveners, 6 warriors, 3 shrikes. can be really nice when put all together.

but even t4 multi wound sm char is just fine aparently...
my nobs realllly dont see too much str 8 insta kills, and at least warriors get armour,
I think they are a very undervalued unit, especial when they bring synapse, decent hth, spedd, all in a scoring package
things are SUPPOSED to have stuff that kills them, you are SUPPOSED to have tools in the box to deal with things... warriors have str 8 to deal with them, smaller infantry has everything sub str 6 and blast to deal with it,
its like someone not taking vehicles because str 9+10 exists....
people will be shooting your huge bugs with stuff long before they even make it to the warriors, its all about target saturation

scything talons will no long let you re roll misses in the new dex, and now theyre going to have to walk across the board instead of sporing in.

right so instead of sporing in, with turn three charges,
you walk across with fleet while supporting/snyergising with your army for turn three charges...
its an extra turn of being shot at, but only if your target saturation isnt done right to begin with, as even sporing in, you reduce the stuff your opponent has to deal with turn one.
take everything en masse enough, and if they dont kill all your synapse by turn three, your whole army of guants/fexes/warriors(whatsleft) charges in an rofl stomps them to the ground...
even if the warriors do all die, it means your bigger bugs didnt, and the odd synapseless creature will still make their IB rolls and not derp themselves

As everyone else is saying, they die easily to standard shooting, but are very expensive. Basically glass cannons, too many points put into offense but not into defense. They remind me of Possesed and Warp Talons from the CSM codex, which cost 30-40 points each, but are just Space Marines at the end of the day...(T4, 1W, 3+ save) They'd wreck face if they got into CC but your opponent will never allow that when its so easy to kill them

15 pts per t4 4+ wound isnt that expensive though, they are synapse creatures after all, so they cannot be much cheaper with out making the tyranid synapse limitations a joke...
with +2 to their cover save fromsome synergy with other models, and enough #'s, they will live long enough to do their job, even with just a 3+ cover they are pretty survivable...
namely provide cheap synapse to all the gribblies
my 20-28pt MEQ gk's do ok in the glass cannon role, its just about finding the right "niche" and how to use them in it.

Warriors are a small stat modification away from being really good. (T5 or 3+ saves)
The problem is, that volume of fire and ID weapons are both super effective against warriors.
While the Meta shifted from a lot of the strength 8-9, the shift to volume of fire is just as bad for Warriors. 30' Rapidfire weapons, Scattershield serpents, HYMP Broadsides are all absolutely brutal, and very common right now. This makes it difficult for Warriors to get in range, and do damage, since they have to footslog it across the board. This makes it very easy to pick off warriors without devoting a lot of firepower.
Ravaners have a very similar issue. They are faster, but they come with an even worse save, which even bolters ignore. They are much quicker, and are excellent in close combat (With rending claws), but will never make it there. Between Overwatch, and nearly every weapon in the game ignoring their armor saves.

You don't actually see a lot of T4 multi wound SM Characters around... that is, T4 without EW. You see Chapter Masters on Bikes, or Chapter Masters with the Shield Eternal, or Chapter Masters on Bikes with the Shield Eternal, or Khan on his Bike, or Vulkan who at least has good saves. All of these guys also get to hide in a unit giving them a few ablative wounds.
And as others have said, it's not just S8 (easily available in pie plate form from Riptides) its massed fire as well that hurts Warriors. Missilesides, shuriken weapons, Serpent Shields, any of the forms of firepower heavily prevalent in the game nowadays are good against Warriors.

Its not just the fact that they can be 1 shotted by str8. Its that they are expensive and are easily killed by anything...even guard blobs will lasgun a warrior squad down easily. They needed T5 or a better save. Most T4 multiwound characters are also sporting a 2+ save or have access to an invulnerable save.
There is also nothing they do well that another unit in the book doesn't do better.
If you wanted a CC scoring unit you're better off taking infiltrating Genestealers.
If you wanted a shooty/synapse/support unit you're better off taking Zoanthropes (or if you wanted a scoring unit then a Tervigon).
The new codex didn't improve them and in fact made boneswords/lashwhips worse.

Warriors are fragile, slow and expensive, a better question would be why anyone would like them. As far as Raveners go, they are completely outclassed by Shrikes (which are still pretty mediocre).

Think of warriors as ablative wounds for your gribblies and MCs. But I bet people will see more warriors in smaller point games. Where theres less mass shooting and target saturation has a bigger effect.

Because we are now a footslooging army and having the beast rule and deepstrike make them one of the few things we have able to deploy aor redeploy quickly. Yes they are expensive for what they do, but flyrants need to deal with bigger things and sometimes gargoyles just aren't equiped to deal with it (light mech/skimmers).
Same thing with warriors. IB is a big issue so cheap synapse is required for objective holders and rear units. So I expect to see a lot of 3 man warrior broods sitting on backfiels objectives baby sitting biovores.
This codex makes it so we have to take what we need, not what we want. Going to be a steep learning curve I think.

You can mix weapo load-outs nows. No big changes long range, but CC totally difrent. We now follow all the normal CC weapon rules. We losT almost every to-hit reroll.
In short it so ddifferent I can't say until a few games in.

Unless they are firing str8+ at the warriors it is effectively 10 pts per wound base with pretty close to a marine stat line per wound.
Add on fearless and all the other things warriors do and it looks pretty good. Especially on a scoring unit. Sure would more bodies help in some cases? sure, thats why you would not take just warriors. But 1-2 units of three as counter assault and a synapse bubble in your backfield or back up for MCs on offense. Who typically has massed str 8 ignore cover? Tau and that is about it. And if their riptides are shooting at your warriors then either you have already lost the game(all your MCs are dead) or they have poor target priority. Are they worse per point against wave serpents than gants/gaunts? When getting shot yep, but that is not really saying much. The thing is they have the ability to do something against a much larger variety of targets. If they stay in their serpents they can basically ignore all the gants/gaunts until the end of the game since they cant hurt armor 10.
In addition they are a scoring unit that will beat the pants off of other scoring units in CC reliably for the same number of points. I would take a 3 man unit of warriors over most other troops in the game from other units matched points for points. They got a huge boost(IMO) from being able to get assault grenades.
There is a lot more that can be said about warriors, however I need to really digest it more....God I want to buy my tyranids again(plus the new plastic kit looks sweeeet).
I think as with everything in 6th edition. The amount of terrain on the table is basically what determines how viable an army is. Assault armies need true LOS blocking terrain now that there is so much ignore cover(specifically ignore cover blasts)

I don't know how fragile warriors are...
Crisis suits are T4 too, and how much S8 and above you know is out there that does not have AP3 or better anyway?
And against bolter-type guns, 3 T4Sv4 wounds are the same as 2 T4Sv3 wounds. (both require 12 hits on average)
Only AP4 shows a real difference.
And crisis suits get to the 50 point mark EASY in most cases, and often go a high as 70.
The warriors also gain from the buff to the glands, now you can have a large team of warriors with toxin sacks and rending claws and use them as a credible threat. 4 base attacks, fleet, FC poison and rending in CC for your pre-charge softening can be quite efferent for a single-purpose assault pressure unit. and 45 points a piece is not THAT much for that package. 900 points of these (20 guys, split between 4 squads probably) can give you your decent troop base, a credible threat of CC (they will probably wipe whatever they touch) and enough synapse to whatever else might need it. (like the MUCH improved HS units?)
HQ maybe deathleaper for messing with the enemy, but for troops you can spam "melee threat" warriors, spam the super cheap spore mine clusters to soften up enemy lines, some biovores to increase the bombardment, maybe some lictors to further harass the enemy (or pyrovores, they might actually work now that they are cheaper, got another wound, and hits harder in CC with more attacks if they make it, and the acid maw/blood thingy. not to mention how well acid blood reacts to the added wound.) you dont get ID by S8 ecause nobody has THAT much S8, and your entire damn army is a multiwound T4.
I wont say its the most competetive list ever, but I would not be quick to rule it out. it just might work. and would sure be amusing.
And I dont even play nids, so I'm sure a sane nid player could do a hell lot better with the warriors.

I don't think that saves assault armies because the terrain slows movement as well. Terrain that Wave Serpents ignore.

- What is the warriors role? It is scooring. It ptovides synapse. If you want to runn them shooty the special weapon is not very good. The regular shooting weapon are descent, but when you compare then to the dedicated gaunt unit it shoots worse for the points. If you want to run them as melee they cost to much and your oponent has very good time to shoot them if he has some range and choose to prioretice them. The general melee gaunts are better. If you want a unit that is duo purpose i think gargoyles are better as they have s4 gun and actualy make it to shooting and melee range.
Next bullitpoint is survivabilaty. S8 ruins warriors day every day. During 5th edition S8 was everywhere. 8th edition a bit less. But every time a warrior dies to S8 it is just wrong. If they could soak up 3 shots each it would be different, but they do not. Eveen worse is this when a blast template hits them with 8+ often all the warriors will die. The next thing is the fact that your synapse disaprars. You can not relly on warriora for synapse.
Having covered the problem with role and death we come to cost: The warriors cost to much when you compare them to the cost of S8 weapons. Pay 30 points for warrior vs 25 points for a long fang. Bs 4 long fang vil have 2-3 turns to kill a warrior. Run 4 warriors 120 points vs 4 long fang rockets for 120ish point. The inisiative is with the long fangs. They can kill the warriors any time they want, and they cost far to little compared to how good they are. This is often true for the riptide, demolisher, leeman rush demolisher etc. That they are priced to cheap is the same as saying warriors are priced far to high.
Raveners are sligtly better as they are a dedicated close combat unit and it is faster then the warrior. However it does not have frag grenades. Aditionally they often do not kill enough even if they arive whole. Wich they often do not.
You will find that tyranid lists often is about plasing your on the board. Depending ong ranged weapons your oponent Automatically Appended Next Post: My mobile failed me.
To continue: depending on what ypur opponent brings in the department of long ranged weapons you army is a big shooting gallerey.
I often read that people say that warriors can be decoys for other buggs. This is not only a bad plan, it is also false. They are not decoys, they do not force your opponent to shoot at them. Asuming you play a good oponent who shoot at what is dangerus at that point in the game (and most of them do because it is quite easy prioretising tyranid threats) asuming this then bying warriors as distraction it actually mean you buy bad units. That is what a warrior distraction is, something that is not good enough to be a threat. The best result is that ypur opponent does not kill the unit you should have bought more of.
That being sead. They might have some use, somewhere. If you like eather of the models just play games for funn. I often used ravaners.

All targets are situational to what is the biggest threat there. When a Riptide with a IA can either fire 3 snap shots at a HT or just overcharge and drop a blast on a squad of warriors, IDing them, those Warriors look good. Especially when you look at things like First Blood or now, Synapse. Killing Synapse before simply made Nids like everyone else (non fearless), now it can be crippling. So your entire army can simply shoot at the 6-8 models with Synapse and if you kill them, you will probably win. Even more so now that Nids lost the majority of their survivability with Psychic powers.
