So I just finished reading Ahriman: Exile and I'm about to start reading the Thousand Sons book.
Yet, at the same time, from other fluff, he seems hell-bent on revenge on the Space Wolves, so how can he have both of these interests? They seem conflicting. What is going on in his mind? What are his goals?

Too many writers with too many stories is what's going on.
Battle of the Fang can be easily explained though. Several times, Magnus has to "remember" that he's supposed to be an all-powerful primarch. My theory is that the Magnus who led the Thousand Sons against the Fang and wants revenge against the Wolves is an imposter or a doppelganger created by Tzeentch as part of an over-arching scheme.

That's just Amon's point of view. Doesn't make him right. Anyway, I'm not sure Ahriman cares what Magnus wants or trusts his judgement.

If only that were actually true. It would certainly make the story less stupid, lol.

also keep in mind the two desires (even if contridictory as people are people) aren't nesscarily opposed. Magnus could want the space wolves to suffer for putting the 1k sons in their current position, while also wanting his sons to "find rest"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two |

I guess, But then they'd have to do the revenge thing first, of course. Kind of hard to carry out revenge when you're dead

Why not both? Drag the Space Wolves to oblivion with you so that you can finally move past it.

Magnus is a tortured soul. He's so damn smart, so damn self aware, and living with the knowledge that regardless of his skills/powers/intelligence he is a screwup. All he has left is self hatred and hatred for the wolves.
Ever torture yourself for a mistake? I'm not talking cutting or some psychological stuff, but "beat yourself up about it", Magnus has been doing it for ten thousand years. I think Magnus is the primarch that most exemplifies "wasted potential".

Yes exactly. I would love the BL writers to explain why Magnus would "forget" he's a Primarch after the many millennia he has spent as one discovering and exploring his abilities.

I thought it's been pretty well established (two books, one 40k and one 30k) that Magnus can make lesser copies of himself that have odd traits (memory loss and easily distracted being the two we've seen), but still retain a respectable level of power.

"I want my legion to die." "I hate the Space Wolves and want them to die." Where's the contradiction here? If anything, one could argue that by attacking the Fang he was trying to kill two birds with one stone, considering how poor a condition the 1KSons are after that battle.

Gotcha. This makes sense. With the thousand sons broken up into 3 warbands, (the prodigal sons, the warband of Sekthoth, and Magnus's forces) they cant have much of a chance defeating the space wolves without massive casualties.

Well, given the psychic power that Magnus was said to possess during the GC and the Heresy, 10,000 years of practice should mean that he could transform the planet of Fenris into a raisin from somewhere else in the galaxy just by thinking about it.
