So I've been throwing around the idea of playing Space Marines for awhile and I was very curious: given that the Codex itself includes many named characters, many of which require there to be Chapter Tactics used by the Chapter Master I had a concern or two.
Could I, for example, use Marneus Calgar and Kor'sarro Khan in the same army? What would the implications be?
Would I be forced to choose one set of Chapter Tactics over another? Or would it not be possible at all?
Again, I wanted to create my own Chapter and rename the named HQ units but I was unsure if I had to adhere to the Chapter Tactics of one or the other.
Input would be much appreciated.

It's absolutely clear in the codex - you are only allowed a single Chapter Tactics per detachment and models with a different CT are not allowed.

So even if I decided to use the Ultramarines Tactics, I could never use Khan for say:
-A separate company of the chapter.
-His abilities.
-Anything in relation to the two at the same time as Calgar.

Just pick an SC, you have to adhere to their chapter tactics.
That doesn't stop you from using their model as a captain/chapter master unit.
They're also easy to replicate with equipment in a captain/chapter master unit.
Only models with the same Chapter Tactics can be included in the same detachment.
You can, however, ally Space Marines with Space Marines in order to take a second Special Character without the Chapter Tactics of the primary detachment.
This would be relatively pointless because all of the Chapter Master's abilities are given to units with their Chapter Tactic.

Not in the same detachment in a game, no.

I am not a space marine player so I could be wrong, but isn't there a rule which states the detachment can only consist of models that have the same chapter tactics as each other? I am assuming these two do not share chapter tactics. Do take note that the restriction is on Detachment, not Army, and I do believe there is a rule that allows the Space Marine to ally with themselves if they do not have the same chapter tactics. This would allow you to take both, as long as you meet the other minimal requirements, and I think they are even battle brothers so the end result is as close to 'same detachment' as you can get. As for changing and modifying models, as long as you do not alter the profile itself or model for advantage, most people are willing to a slightly different looking model with a completely different name.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

On the same note of using one over the other:
If I had a Chapter Master from a Chapter other than Black Templars, I couldn't use a Crusader Squad as troops in the same detachment then?
I'm following what everyone's been adding and I appreciate all the help and info. I'm just trying to clear some things up before I start putting things together on my end.

Correct. In order to have Crusader troops, you must be using Black Templars chapter tactics in the detachment.
If you want to use a "Custom" chapter master, modeled off another, I imagine that could be possible .. but it also depends on where you're playing and who you're playing against. If you're playing against your buddies and they are ok with your "Marneus, counts as CHapter Master X of the ABC Chapter" then go for it, but mixing 2 chapters together is not ok (you can ally in a 2nd, different chapter if you wish to do so though).

The rules are clear as day, 1 detachment 1 chapter tactic, and you may take another chapter as allied detachment, now when it comes down to special characters, the rules also state that as llongas the chapter tactics are matching thosof the special character you wwantto use then all is fair, whether it is a counts as or the actual character that is all fine. This being on the grounds of since all home chapters are successors of the founding legion that the founding legion's finest warriors will join in operations by the successors

The one trick I have been doing is having that different part of your chapter represented on the table by using the other CT as your Ally detachment. Personally I run an Ultramarine list with White Scars allies, this allows me to field Tigerius, Telion and Khan all at once.

The rule has been explained, the forum for isn't a replacement for the brb and codices.
I am sorry if you're having trouble with the new rule but it reads like fishing for rules quotes.
