Subject: Black Templars Fluff Army. The Halifax Crusade
So I want to make an effective army list that corresponds to this storyline I have developed around two dreadnoughts and their Crusade to battle Chaos. My plan here is to take the tools that C:SM has to offer to make a single unified Black Templar looking army with their own story.
Spoiler:
Chaplain Halifax was ready for death. He had been waiting for this moment. He would finally be able to honor the Emperor, and with him, the crusade squad he was entrusted. He walked slowly before the row of kneeling marines. His voice was low and somber as he recited the ancient battle rites. The thurible he swung wafted incense over the squad, covering them in the strength of the empire, and protecting them from the stench of chaos.
“When battle is faced, and the enemy met, there will be no hesitation. There will be no fear or doubt, for doubt is the place of chaos. Assuredness…Strength…Conviction. These are the virtues of the Black Templars, and blessed with these virtues we will suffer not the unclean to live. Now, rise my brethren. Lift your chainsword and let us honor the Emperor with our lives, on this our greatest and final crusade”
The first to rise was the most decorated Initiate, Ruud Wilhelm. The others followed in suit, but Wilhelm had taken it upon himself to be the second in command of the squad. He had seen countless battles and if he hadn’t been sent out on this emergency deployment, he could have been promoted to Commander.
“You heard him! Pick up your weapons and get in to position. The enemy is advancing and if they set one foot on this sacred ground, you will have failed the Emperor’s will.”
The sound of screeching howls and roaring flames crept its way in to the hallowed halls of the ancient church. The sound triggered immediate action from the squad and within seconds they were lined at the door facing a legion of marauding daemons. Ruud lifted his chainsword, which in a flash of light resembled the Black Sword. His voice boomed across the field before them.
“Suffer Not the Unclean to Live!”
With that the squad charged in to battle, the lonely 10 faced hundreds of daemons, but their faith did not waiver.

“Everyone’s dead sir. The town is destroyed. The temple is unscathed. Repeat, the Emperor’s temple stands. Oversized daemon found at steps to temple. Chainsword lodged in the back of his neck. *indecipherable* wait a minute. After moving the daemon, we found the chaplain. Limbs lost, unconscious…still alive….*mumbled voices in the background* Another survivor. The owner of the chainsword found…also alive…what’s left of him.”
A great ceremony was held to honor these two while they underwent the arduous process of being installed in to the great war machines. Through their horrific cries of pain, chaplains from several crusades and even two priests from the Ecclesiarch of Terra came to bless the two with their honors for defending a site that was previously thought to be lost, the oldest known temple to the emperor. During the ceremony, legions of imperial guard were setting up a permanent base on the planet to prevent future invasions.
For the great deed, Chaplain Halifax was elevated to Saint, and Ruud Wilhelm was knighted.
The two refuse to accept new positions or often to even honor their new titles. They say they had done what any other black templar would have done in the same situation. But nonetheless, the nicknames stuck and followed them through their crusade. The two were often given command of skirmish battles and sent to desolate locations to help show new commanders what it means to lead a squad in to combat.
Saint Halifax and Sir Wilhelm soon became famous throughout the systems and spearheaded the 39th Holy Crusade. The goal: to eradicate chaos and erect a temple to the emperor at every battle site where chaos was defeated.
So, to make this an army I am going to go Black Templar with an Iron Hand detachment. The whole army will be painted up as Black Templars, but i may just change the bases a little bit to signify which units (for rules purposes) are Iron Hands. I remember that in older editions you could only have one Ven. Dreadnought per army, but I don't recall seeing that in the codex this time around. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
*Black Templar CT*
HQ Chapter Master w/ power axe, storm shield, artificer armor, melta bombs = 185
Elite Terminator Assault Squad w/ 4 TH/SS = 220
Terminator Squad w/ CML = 220
Troops 6 Initiates, las/plas = 119
6 Initiates, las/plas = 119
6 Initiates, las/plas = 119
*Iron Hands Allied Detachment*
HQ Master of the Forge = 90?
Elite Sir Wilhelm: Ven. Dread w/ heavy flamer drop pod, beacon = 170
Troops Sniper Squad w/ camo cloaks = 70
Heavy Saint Halifax: Ven. Dread Halifax w/ plasmacannon, missile launcher = 165?
Total 1478?
I'm not sure on the exact points cost for some of these but I think this leaves me with around 20-30 points leftover. Having the Iron Hands CT on the dreads really gives them the feel on the board that they have been around for hundreds of years and are the true leaders of this army. Anyway, I want an army that has two dreadnoughts at it's center, and uses BT as the primary detachment. What do you guys think of this? I think Saint Halifax is my primary anti-infantry unit, and other than him, I feel like a horde army would be able to put me down pretty easily.
