Hello Dakka, long time lurker but my first post.

I have seen Warhammer World is running another Regiment of Renown (RoR) day at the end of May and I am thinking of going along. This is basically kill team for fantasy.

The last set of rules can be found here:

http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3080051a_Regiment_Pack_%282%29.pdf

I am guessing they will change slightly but not by that much.

I don't really play either version of Warhammer but enjoy painting projects and as such kill team/RoR is great for me to work on something new.

I am totally undecided about what to take along so am looking for advice from anyone that has played this before or just has experience with the game and armies generally.

The main contendors currently are:

Skaven - I have Island of Blood unbuilt and could make a core of troops from this. I guess a few night/gutter runners could be good backed up by clan rats and a few stormvermin. Also have the codex for these guys but never used it.

High Elves - IoB gives a good core again - Always strikes first could be amazing in little one on one encounters. Don't have the codex for these guys but imagine a couple of sword masters plus maybe some reavers and a pheonix guard or 2 could be good.

Dark elves - I have always loved the corsair models, just not sure if they are any good! Some of them plus a couple of witch elves maybe a cold one knight or some other fast cav? Are Warlocks any good? What about executioners / blackguard? I don't have the book for these guys either and don't really know much about them rules wise.

Orcs - just cause I love them! I have a small OnG force already so would not need to buy much just paint a few more guys. Black Orc leader, a boar boy for speed, a couple of arrer boys and some standard boys here I think. Only problem is the low Initiative could be crippling. Plus its not really a new project, although with a huge painting backlog that could be a good thing!

These are the main contenders but I am really not sure what will work in this game type, I am not looking for an uber build just something that can work without being tabled every time, not really sure which are the strong factions in fantasy currently.

As it will only be a small team I am happy to buy a few boxes of troops plus a codex book if needed - boxes that make 2 troop types that can both be used are an added bonus!

Thanks for any help you can give.

Tremble.

I've played this a few times now, it's a lot of fun. I've played with Chaos Dwarfs, but I've been working on Skaven and Dark Elves, so I can give you advice on those.

Skaven can be fun. If you make a Jezzail your leader, you can upgrade him to a unit champ. That's huge because it will give him BS 4. If you give him the "Hand Crafted ammo" DoW perk, then he will have no penalty for long range. That is a nasty combo that will take care of many other Regiments leaders (knights seem to be a common choice).

The problem with a Jezzail leader is that he is only LD5. That in itself wouldn't bother me, but the leader has to have the highest LD. So making the jezzail a leader means that you can't take any Eshin choices... which are my favorite. So here's the Skaven Regiment I plan on running:

LEADER & DoW: Gutter Runner, Poison weapons, Sling, Hand Crafted Ammo, Potion of Strength
- Very good shooting and can potentially throw a S6 ninja star, or use the potion in combat. The plan is to pick off easy targets so you can roll higher on the chart.

Censor bearer
Censor bearer
- A lot of high strength attacks for this points level

DoW: Night runner, Sling, The Last Shot: 8
- The last shot is another way to threaten armor. It is a scary moment for your opponent.

Night Runner, Sling
Night Runner, Sling

DoW: Slave, Musician: 2
- With 20 models, I don't want to panic off the board with potentially 9 still on the board. LD 7 isn't great odds, but a rerollable 7 is a little safer. Just keep him far away from the combat... just in case

12 more slaves, lol.

That bring the total to 19 bodies. Just swarm them while your Gutter runners pick off targets. The Censors are there to try and deal with tougher targets. Use the potion of strength and the last shot wisely.

I think the Jezzail leader set up can work also though. I'd still try to get near 20 bodies though, just to feel like Skaven.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
On to the Dark Elves...

I've played around more with Dark Elves because everything is so good. My group banned Warlocks for this, so I haven't even considered them.

Here's probably my two favorite Dark Elf regiments:

LEADER and DoW: Cold One Knight, Potion of Strength, 5+ Regen (the +1 save might be nice also)
- He's here to hit hard and get some kills. The potion is there for turns that I think I'll be charged. He only has one attack, but with ASF and Murderous Prowess, it has very good chance to land. Plus his mount has 2 S4 attacks.

DoW: Shade with Great Weapon, Light Armor, Hand Crafted Ammo
- Much like the Skaven gutter runner... loses poison but has a better BS.

DoW: Dark Rider, shield, Frenzy Flail (forgot what it's called)
- has the speed to reach out and tough someone. 2 S5 attacks with frenzy, asf, and muderous prowess? yes please

Witch/Corsair
Witch/Corsair
Witch/Corsair
- I think Witches are much better because generally there won't be very much shooting in this scenario and with 3 attacks and I6, witches will kill nearly everything they face... but Corsairs make more sense for the scenario and are a "nicer" choice. Your call on which you'd prefer.

THE SECOND LIST:
This one was just to get more bodies so I could have 2 shades mowing down stuff. So I wanted 8 bodies. I just thought of this on the way to work this morning.

LEADER and DoW: DoW: Shade with Great Weapon, Light Armor, Hand Crafted Ammo... +20 points of magic items.
- same idea as above.

DoW: Shade with Great weapon, The Last Shot

DoW: Executioner with the Frenzy Flail
- What a badass. He drops his GW, so now he benefits from the ASF rerolls and he gained an attack. He still has killing blow. He's a threat to anything.

Swordsman
Swordsman
- not great, but points are tight because I wanted 8 bodies

Witch/Corsair
Witch/Corsair
Witch/Corsair
-see above

There you go. Good luck making your final lists. It's really fun and I hope it catches on with more people. It's the most fun my group has had with fantasy in a long time. It's funny too because for the first time in awhile we were all talking about starting new armies! Amazing how we want to buy more when the scale of battle is decreased...

Thanks for the info, it's great to hear from someone that's actually played this!

While I don't doubt the skaven list is good I think I would prefer something a bit more characterful than a mass of slaves.

I really like the Dark Elf ideas. I don't have that army book so don't know the full points and options for them but the idea of a cold one knight leading a couple of corsairs and witch elves sounds cool. Not sure if a mix or just one of those types would be better. Are shades a lot better than normal crossbow elves? You think quality is better than quantity here?

How did you get on with your dwarves? My gut feeling without any actual playing is that high initiative and ASF models are going to dominate, did you find this or was it not that big a problem?

I have come up with an idea for an Orc list but am not sure about it.

Arrer boy boss.
Boar boy shield and spear - impact hits weapon.
Orc big Un hand weapon and shield - ASF weapon.
3 boys hand weapon and shield.
2 boys additional hand weapons.
1arrer boy.
3 night gobs hand weapons and shields.
1 night gob short bow.

Have not decided on the last special rule. Will probably be either the one that removes the negative for over half range or the final shot(?) one. Again not sure if I should put it on the boss or the standard rarer guy.

I have the silly idea of modelling them as Robin Hood and his men, including 1 in drag as maid Marian, though I am not sure if an rarer boy boss is a bad idea! Also if initiative is critical not sure orcs are a good idea full stop.

Any opinions will be gladly received!

Glad to help, it's a great scenario. Hopefully it catches on more. I switched my sig to include it because I don't think most people know it even exists.

Shades are very good. They have BS5 and can be given great weapons. On quality vs quantity (I'll get to this in my skaven list also), you just have to remember that only 25% of your models can have a shooting attack.

So with my first list, I knew I wouldn't be able to get 2 shooters since I was taking a CoK. I may as well take the best shooter I could. It's tempting to upgrade the CoK to a unit champ though (you can do that for a leader) to get the second attack. If you do that, then you no longer have enough points for a shade and you may as well take a Crossbowmen or maybe even a Dark Rider with a Bow.

With Skaven... I really like clan eshin. The problem is that they all come with thrown weapons, so in order to get a lot of eshin, I had to get a lot of bodies due to the pesky 25% rule.

My Chaos Dwarves did okay, we did a 4 player mini tournament and I got 4th... but all the games were surprisingly close. A Dwarf player won, and I was the only one that beat him. I lost one game because my Bull Centaur fled after taking one wound and whiffing all his attacks. Then I lost another game that came down to my Bull Centaur vs a Wood Elf archer. I failed my morale check, so my regiment had to flee. If I had won that game I would have finished first.

I don't know much about Orcs, so I can't really help you there. Some of the best DoW perks are the Frenzy Flail, Hatred, and the Special Ammo. Those are the ones that repeatedly seemed to help out.

I've been working on a TK list for this. TK are difficult because of how bad they are individually.

I'll pop mine up in another thread to keep from derailing yours.
