So I'm trying a mono-scheme with my Nids, and after a few test pieces I painted something substantial and I'd like to hear some opinions about whether or not it works.
He doesn't have arms as I haven't gotten around to painting those yet (he's magnetized). I like it so far, but I want to hear what you think!
- Is there enough contrast?
- Will it look bland across an entire army?
- What should I base it with? I'm thinking slate for a dark gray for contrast against the white with small bits of grass for pops of green
Thank you!

I like it! Ghastly and very creepy looking. I think you should stick with it. Original looking for another reason why to keep it. You have a very clean look on the green which contrasts the body, and armor.
What are you doing forthe bases? I hope they will contrast the figure.
Am I wrong, or are you not going much further with the main body, and carapace?

Thank you! I don't think I'd do anything else to the body or carapace, unless someone points out a jarring area where it needs improvement. I was going for ghastly and creepy, so I'm glad that came across!
I'm thinking of probably doing some darker slate, to really give some pop to the whites when I put the army down on a table, maybe with some sprigs of grass here an there to break it up. I just need to find a place to actually get basing materials (If anyone knows a good US based site that I could buy from, I would love to hear it!).

recently I saw the movie Prometheus, I enjoyed it, the aliens were similar to the pale look you have with yours. I thought they did a bang up job with the special effects.
I took a similar scheme meaning just a few colors, I had literally been waiting years to find a color scheme I liked, and actually waited so long my models had all been re-made into plastics I got them painted.. But when I played Heavy Gears I took a scheme similar to their beasties, using gray bodies, and black carapace, with black speckling leading away and thinning from the carapace bits on them. Looks ok. I love the milky white eyes the gene stealers were described to have in the older novels, I have gray and black Nid beasties, haven’t finished painting and now they are redone yet again…
So what I’m saying is your scheme looks fantastic thus far, reminds me of the Prometheus aliens.

I loved Prometheus, and I really hope that they make a sequel to finish the story. I wasn't thinking of that when I thought of the scheme, but I love that it kinda throws back to that.

I remember when Nids first came out... Reds and blues... I was not impressed or creeped out, they are supposed to be terrifying... You're all over it! Because a big purple bug, is just too Barny for me...

My Hive Fleet Kielbasa is done in a naturalistic three tone scheme that matches the desert world theme of my terrain.

Slate chippings for bases can be bought from aquarium centres where it is sold as a decoration for the bottom of fish tanks. You can get large bags of slate mulch from garden centres. They are probably too big for your needs but could be worth a look.

Those look fantastic! Definitely eased my fears of my scheme looking good together as an army. And the aquarium centre idea is great, I'll have to look up if there's any near me.

I found slate in my ditch in Tennessee, crated up a bunch of this crumbly rock and took it with me when I moved, and then I pick a few bits for my base, glue it then coat it with super glue to make it less fragile.
I would suggest picking base colors in contrast to your any of the colors on your mini's in order to make them stand out. Just my opinion. ie. an Ork with a green base just looks blah. Like I wouldn't do a Mars/red planet scheme for my BA's...

Not really sure about this scheme. I think it would be nice to see some pictures of it against a dark grey background.
I think it might just be that it is close to that wall colour so I am not seeing a lot of the pop from the model. Base it in a contrasting scheme. Grey, black or something to make the model stand out.
I like the greens and I think it will look good I just don't think the pictures do the model justice.

From an artistic perspective yes, but i always imagine nids to blend in to their environment.

Things look different IRL to the digital compressed pictures we see in wargaming websites.
Naturalistic models do not "pop" so well on the internet.

I'll try and find a gray background to use (maybe the dark purple of the last page of the codex, haha), as well as a better camera.

I agree about the need for contrast. I keep toying with the idea of using a mist forest as a theme, but it will be very labor intensive to do properly. All the vines and mossy trees, not to mention mist. But I think your nids would look great slinking through those lush greens.

I feel like some kind of blue is needed either on the armor or the muscles underneath to make it pop. It looks good, but there's a lot of empty space.

Meh not my choice of colour. Great application you are a clearly a.good painter. But I don't like it. To pale looks more.sick than scary. But realy with any army a fully painted set of everything the same colour looks great. Automatically Appended Next Post: The.coulors used for the carapace and body are too similar. Tyranid 101 painting typically involves one color for carapace. One for ribs and body. And a flesh coulor. Carapace and body colors look the same.
