Sorry, my local store's codex got deleyed from GW.

I have 2 qustions about the flyers in the GW codex:

Can they start on the board?
Do they die horibly to grounding tests? (I belive the old harpy had T5 and got instant killed by a S10 grounding test failure hit?)

- Thank you very much.

They follow the standard FMC rules in the BRB for starting on the board, and yes they can be grounded and can subsequently be shot by S10 guns.

I thought if you failed the grounding test you took a save vs a S10 attack, effectively instant killing a T5 MC?

It's only a s9 hit, so they won't be ID'd

Aha. I have not played in a long while.

This makes them a bit more playable. ;-)

but thats not the problem. the problem is that now they can be shot at and killed easily with what, t5 and 4+ armor?

In the Casualty section of a Blood Bowl dugout

The problem is Quad Guns, the most common Skyfire weapon and the one that every army (except, guess what, Tyranids) can take. It's not unlikely for a BS5+ model on a Quad Gun to straight-up kill the Harpy/Crone with one round of shooting, as soon as they come in (thanks to Interceptor). They're hitting on 2s, re-rolling, then wounding on 2s and ignoring armour. You can Jink, which gives you a turn of snap-shooting before being killed the following turn.

This quickly escalates into a tactic thread.

But assuming a lot of your opponents run aegis defence line that can hit 4 shots that wound on 2+ and ignores 4+ armour saves we can sumerice that running just one flying MC might not be so smart.

That being sead they can start on the table, so no free turn of skyfire. I gues we just need weapons to take out that gun or not run flyers our selves. The problem then is that all ouer anti-air is tied up in fliers. (A 12 shot dakka fex might actualy hit and glance, but not much else.)

You are going to need to reserve your flyer(s) and dedicate something like the Exocrine to take out the Quad Gun.

Does something +1 on reserves? Perhaps a mawlock can eat it? Or spore mines can blow it up? I need to find out where the tyranid long ranged weapons are.

The Exocrine isn't going to take out the quad gun first turn...which is what would be needed to make this viable.

Not to mention the quad gun (or all anti-air/other flyers) is not the only thing that threatens these guys. Anything that can land a hit can force grounding tests, and once it's on the ground, 5 t5 4+ wounds do not last long.

I think the Grounding test is such a ridiculously important die roll. Almost makes me feel bad for FMC.

In most games I have been in, fliers don't last more than a turn (some die as the come in!). Harpy/Crone appear to be doomed to the same fate.

Biovores may be handy. Their long range means you can hammer the quad cannon with barrages and even land some mines near them. Unless it's in area terrain, the squad manning it probably won't receive cover, and they may even get pinned (though unlucky. I can't recall the last time I or my opponent got pinned by something :/)

Not to mention the bolter/shuriken etc rounds that forced the test has a good chance of wounding you because it has the resilience of an Ork biker.
