I'm interested in putting together a modest starting Chaos SM army for a friend of mine who is interested in playing but has little experience and less money. I'd like to put together a decent starting army for him as a retirement gift without bankrupting myself. Using a Daemon Prince, 2 CSM battleforces and the units from DV, I put together a sample list, but as I only play vanilla marines, I have no idea if this is a viable list or not. Please help! I'd really appreciate any insight or ideas on how to do this.

HQ (200pts)

Daemon Prince (Khorne) Wings/CCW

Elites

Helbrute w/MM, PF/HF

Possessed
Possessed Champion - Veterans of the Long War
Icon of Wrath
10x Possessed w/ Mark of Khorne

Troops

Chaos Space Marines
Aspiring Champion w/ Bolt Pistol, Bolter, Power Weapon
9x Chaos Space Marine w/ Flamer, Icon of wrath, Mark of Khorne, Missile Launcher w/ Frag + Krak, Veteran of the long war
Chaos Rhino

Chaos Space Marines
Aspiring Champion w/ Bolt Pistol, Bolter, Power Weapon
9x Chaos Space Marine w/ Flamer, Icon of wrath, Mark of Khorne, Missile Launcher w/ Frag + Krak, Veteran of the long war
Chaos Rhino

Chosen (Troops)
Chosen Champion w/Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon
5x Chosen w/ Twin Lightning Claws x 1, Power Fist x 1, Power Weapon, Veterans of the Long War

Fast Attack

Chaos Bikers
Chaos Biker Champion w/ BP, CCW
5x Chaos Biker (100pts), 2x Flamer, Icon of Wrath, Mark of Khorne, Veteran of the Long War

This comes out to about 1500 pts, give or take, and from what I can tell, it should be a focused close-combat army. Any and all feedback will be most appreciated. Thanks you for looking!

Is this going to be run with the Black Legion supplement? If not, then Chosen aren't troops. I would also slap power armour and the Black Mace on the DP, it's so much better that way, increases the attack and survivability by a large margin. I'd also give the bikes meltas, as aside from the MLs and Helbrute, no anti-armour is there. Stick a power lance on the champion too. Nix the Possessed, too much of a pointsink, and put another squad of CSM in as you kitted out the other two if possible. Otherwise, solid list; it isn't cheese but can give other solid lists a hard fight.

Yeah helbrutes arent great unless you have lots and lots of armor in your army, otherwise its just going to get blown up by all ur opponents AV turn 1.

If you must take them, take them in 500-750 point games or, in larger games, give them a Reaper Autocannon and a Missile launcher and stick him 48" into the backfield and hope his distance will keep him alive till the game ends.

If you want melee CSM, take Berserkers!

Possessed should never, ever be foot-slogged. I'll eat my hat if you play a single game with footslogged Possessed that make it into fighting. Unless you take 20 with the mark of nurgle, then you might have a chance, but still, many will die. Also, rhinos will not do, as the possessed are such a huge threat, and rhinos are so easy to blow up, your opponent will never allow it. seeing as how they cannot deep strike, the very expensive land raider is your only option with possessed. If you cannot afford a land raider, do not take possessed.

If you're going to make CC bikers, you need to give them a Chaos Lord on a bike to give them fearless.

I second the opinion on the daemon prince.

Princes are fun but not a viable warlord they die every game without exception but always demolish anything they attack. You need another lord or scorcerer, otherwise that's a free victory point right there. Of the 2 scorcerer is preferred as he is a psyker which is fun for a new player to use, and a generic lord won't out do a princes body count anyway. Idea is to advance with your army while the prince is slaughtering entire squads. Shooting the prince keeps your infantry unmolested. Ignoring a prince is a very stupid thing to do. Armor wings and axe of blind fury will kill anything vehicle or other that he charges and clocks at 255pts which is cheap as far as princes go and he earns back his points quickly or instantly if a landraider is in sight.

The lord in the dv set doubles as an instant Sorcerer

Brutes traditionaly are hacked to peices and have crude plasma cannons attached.

Cc chosen suck don't field them use the models as aspiring champions and rope the missile launchers into a havoc squad

CSM should be cc tooled so flamers and meltaguns only drive up the board in rhinos and then get out and tank shock e eimies I to tight groups to .maximise flamer hits from the charging squad. Destroyer blades are a nice bonus. Shooty csm are outdone by cultists who can pull off stupid amounts of s3 shots and are better objective sitters. Leave cc to pros.

That's about it realy

Armies
CSM Zenmarine Warband from assorted tratiors and heritics

DARK ANGELS woo woot
the way to win is not to make a grand masterplan, its by making sure your opponents grand masterplan fails

Thank you all for you advice, I very much appreciate it.

As I said, I'm trying to do this on the cheap, so I'd like to use every unit available as effectively as possible. I've revised the list as follows:

HQ

Sorcerer (Warlord)

Daemon Prince
Wings, power armor, daemon of Khorne, axe of blind fury

Elites

Helbrute
TL LC, CCW or ML (the idea is to stick the Helbrute in the backfield and ping away with the ML and LC, but I'd have to do a little conversion work first)

Chosen (These are the DV Chosen, so they're already tooled out for close combat; is it worth taking them as a kill team, or should I just use them as aspiring champions?)
Champion - PW
Chosen x 5 - 1x PW, 1x twin LC, 1x PF

Troops

Chaos Marines
Aspiring champion - pistol, bolter, PW
Marines x 9 - flamer, ML, icon of wrath, Mark of Khorne, Veterans of the Long War
Chaos Rhino

Chaos Marines
Aspiring champion - pistol, bolter, PW
Marines x 9 - flamer, ML, icon of wrath, Mark of Khorne, Veterans of the Long War
Chaos Rhino

Chaos Marines (no Rhino for this squad, so I think a ML or LC for holding home objectives)
Aspiring champion - pistol, bolter, PW
Marines x 9 - flamer, ML, icon of wrath, Mark of Khorne, Veterans of the Long War

Fast Attack

Chaos Bikes (tooled out for anti-armor)
Aspiring Champion - Combi-melta, PW
Bikes x 5 - melta gun x 2
Icon of Wrath, Mark of Khorne, Veterans of the Long War

Thanks again for the look.
