So, there have always been the occasional scratch-build threads in the P&M forum. In the last month, however, just as we've seen an explosion of threads debating the validity and lamenting the overpowering of escalation units, there's been a correlating surge in the number of titan builds. However, where the norm had been to see warhound or warlord builds before, with only the occasional xeno titan, I've noticed a dramatic rise in build logs revolving around the Revenant, both here and on other forums. Anyone else think it's suspicious that the new notorious OP monster is getting a ton of scratch build love?

Scratchbuilds perform better because they're made by hand with love and love conquers all. It's science.

Of course there are plenty of people who are just trying to get D-weapons for cheap.
I hate D-weapons.

Might be the "arms race". Attended a tourney yesterday and both new optional rules sets were allowed. We had a stormlord (I think thats the name of the troop transport one) and the necrom super god show up against the rest of us who had "norl" lists. talking with our TO, he indicated that this will likely be a trend across the board. I hope he is wrong but who knows. This might be a reason as players are just trying to be more competetive and other players just dont wanna lose all the time. lol i know its making me put finishing up my shadowsword on the top of my to do list.

Of all the super heavies titans are some of the simplest to build, and because most people don't have the cash on hand for FW's very cool models they make their own.

It also probably has something to do with pointing at something and saying "I built that."

Might be because titans are Blocky and square.
The big nasties of the other armies are more organic shaped and complicated.

That said I love everything homebrew so i approve of this.

There are some pretty easy conversions you can do that will turn a WraithKnight into a decent looking Revenant Titan. Personally, I was already planning a couple before the new Apoc book, simply because I think they look better than the WraithKnights.

As to the arms war, "God made Man, Colt made Man equal." If you feel undergunned, get a better/bigger gun.

The scratch-built warhound titan that shows up in my FLGS every so often looks better than the GW variant and was built for like $40. I gave the guy PVC pipe to use in the build.

I can't see why anyone would want to pay upwards of $600 for one. It's a toy.

Everyone playing an imperial faction here either has a counts as Thunderhawks or Warhound and all but one eldar players bought extra WK to counts as eldar titans . then only dude that didn't has one that looks like the original one .

600$ + tax +work time is so over the top that no one would ever pay it for a model and those that can don't play with models .

As said above there really are two kinds of scratch builders, those who build for the love of the hobby and those who build for the easy win. And you can almost always tell who is who. The latter will almost always have almost no passion or detailing in their models, while the first usually end up with a work of art.

That said I wouldn't say it's suspicious. Kind of predictable actually... after the apoc book had nothing but beautiful high def pics of these beasts its no wonder everyone wants in on the awesome.

Because some people actually enjoy the modeling and painting aspect of the hobby.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

But you can get the same thing , which will take paint in the same way and which you will model the same way for cheaper.

Not really, you just need to toss up whether the convenience of the real model is worth more than the hobby time lost researching a creating a scratch build worthy of paint and table.

This. Some people would rather spend $500 to buy a titan than spend a year or more building a scratchbuild to an equivalent level of detail. And that's assuming you have the scratchbuilding skills to build a proper titan at all. Many people, even people who are good at painting, don't.
