Like I said, it doesn't necessarily need to be as competitive as wave serpent spam, but I would like to not lose every game. Could the concept of Dark Reapers and Wraithknight/Wraithguard footslog work?

The Twilight Zone

Footdar can be very strong if you play your cards right, and the concept you are going for does work. 1-2 wave serpents are very useful(and not spammy at all) and worth adding, but I will keep my suggestions to foot units.

The Avatar should ALWAYS take fast shot. No exceptions. Bs10, battle focus and precision shots on a 6 are just too many reasons to take a second melta shot. The avatar won't always get to CC to do his thing, but he can usually fire some fire from his fingers. Night vision is useless since his only weapon has a 12" range...it is useful if you want him on a quad gun or icarus(again, with fast shot) but otherwise chuck it. Crushing blow is OK, but the majority of the targets you need it against are MC's, and monster hunter outperforms. Against bikes or nurgle units it shines, but only then. Against armor 2 melta shots usually does the job, and S6 on the assault wrecks most rear armor-just smash attack if you really need. Monster hunter is OK if you expcet to fight other MC's, the only other power worth considering is disarming strike. Expensive, but is can save your bacon against force weapons, power fists, thunder hammers and other nasty weapons your enemies unique snowflake might be carrying.

Since you have 2 wraithguard units and a wraithknight, I strongly suggest a spiritseer. This would give you 2 more troop units, unlock some psychic support, and give you spirit mark. Spiritseers are dirt cheap, but dead lethal. If you go dual primaris, you get shrouded wraithguard with psychic shriek. Psychic shriek and d-scythes outright erase units, but there are plenty of other great powers like protect, renewer, puppet master, invisibility and hallunication. In CC, your spiritseer provides a pretty decent challenge fighter. I also strongly suggest the iyanden supplement to get voice of twilight and some cool wargear. The only thing more powerful than wraith units are wraith units with battle focus. Battle focus+d scythes(or cannons) gets outright ugly.

5 wraiths on foot are a bit too easy to kill. You could combine into 1 squad of 10, or try 2 squads of 5.I personally use cannons to be cheap and for the S10, but d-scythes are fantastic, so if you really want em I totally understand. Its really a matter of preference and what you want them to do. A 10 man strong scoring unit with either d weapon and spiritseer support is disgusting. Remember, the spirit mark can't benefit the scythes or the suncannon, but it can benefit CC and straight shot guns.

Defenders on foot are OK with the Avatar for an early fearless bubble. The avatar will probably die, and you don't always want to drag your troops along. Sometimes guardians need to sit back and camp, but regardless of use, they need a special weapon on foot. There is no wrong choice except the EML. Lances for AT, starcannon for anti 3+/2+ armor, scatter laser for jack of all trades, shuricannon for cheap but effective. Just beware the range of the shuricannon.

Rangers are pretty good, and have some nice utility, but 2 squads is a bit much for 1500. Consider 1 squad of rangers, and 1 squad of 3 guardian jetbikes. For the price of the rangers, you get 3 jetbikes and another guardian. Keep em in reserve to turbo boost and contest objectives. A bit more durable than rangers, but less sniper power should you want it. One unit of each has served me well most of the time. With rangers, considering outflanking them instead of infiltrating depending on the mission.

Reapers are pretty good, and the EML+fast shot is good as well. However, reapers NEED night vision, as they usually only get 1-2 turns to shoot. Night can hinder their range, and grant cover saves that prevent an early kill. Well worth the points to ensure they work as planned. 2 EML shots are not the best AT around, and without a squad of starshot missiles to help, you are wasting a lot of fire. Consider just giving the exarch starshot, to keep the mass S5 ap3.

I personally like wraithknights stock. Long ranged S10 Ap2 makes quick work of tanks and heavy units alike. The suncannon is nice, and accurate but a smart enemy will space out, and your list needs some long range AT. Stock saves you a lot of points, and the extra dakka rarely matters, unless your up against a draigo/logan/deathwing where you need a LOT of AP2(even then, spacing mitigates the impact)

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.
