I'm just looking for people's thoughts on the new beast. It looks pretty cool, but its rules... not so much. Sure, he can dish out some damage, but with only WS3 on what is supposed to be a combat beast is rather disappointing. Even the Feeder-beast rule is disappointing; he could lay down the law and dish out three wounds, but only gets one wound back, though a bonus is that Acid Blood works with this rule, so he can loose and gain a wound before he even strikes. His Rapacious Hunger rule only works when he charges, so Adrenal Glands is damn-near mandatory for this beast (and the furious charge brings him up to S8, which is good too), and the tongue attack has the potential to be a precision shot, so you can swallow a special weapon if you get lucky.

Regeneration is also quite useful on this guy, but a 30 points regeneration is iffy.

Has anyone tried this guy out or seen him used?

Paperweight. 3attacks +1 on the charge with only WS3 ? Thats 2 hits vs most any army which generate 1 more hit. So 3 hits for all those points ?

My best friend has bought one recently. For his sake I hope it's good, but not too good. I'm already struggling with all those TMCs.

I'm gonna need a second Tri-Las Predator anyway...

I second Fragile's opinion. It is pretty fragile without catalyst or venomthrope support, slow as feth with 6" movement and when it does reach the opponent's army and survives the overwatch, the number of attacks is pretty underwhelming. It's pretty much dead weight in your army lists and it takes up a spot for the glorious venothropes or zoans for additional synapses.

The exocrine is definitely the better model to make from the box.

4 Carnifexes and 3 Haruspexes are the same cost I think.

Carnifexes have 1 more Wound, 1.25 more hits against WS 3-6, 3 more Strength, but don't gain a wound back when they cause damage, nor have a gun.

In general, I'd take Carnifexes over Haruspexes.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

Trygon's instead?

Im going to play test one once im done painting it. The bottom line is i love the look of it, so i want to run it. But the low weapon skill leaves it vulnerable, i think it comes stock with crushing claws also? I'd have to look at the rule book, that might buy it a extra 2 attacks. Either way the endocrine seems to be the better option for the points, thank God for magnets.

Tunneling Trygon

A Trygon is 30 points more than a Haruspex. For this you gain +3 attacks, -1 strength, 6 strength 5 shots, higher WS and Fleet... The Haruspex would have to hit a lot to get an equal number of attacks on the charge, and even then wouldn't do as well in later rounds. I hate to say it as the Haruspex looks pretty freaking cool, but it is not the better choice if you have HS slots open. Even then a Carnifex may be better than a Trygon, but that's harder to compare.

A haruspex or two are, in my opinion, more like a "Don't get too close" bubble than anything. Sure, they're slow, but it doesn't hurt to have something relatively durable hanging around any fragile units you may have.

I may try one out, likely as a deterrent near my Biovores (which do move up with the rest of the forces, incidentally.) Who wants to deep strike close to that thing?

First game using a Haruspex resulted in it gobbling up a handful of Wraithguard before getting slaughtered by a counter-charge of Axe-equipped Wraithblades (did kill a couple with acid blood in return though)... Not impressive, but it did make back its cost at least.

Anyway, it seems to me the Haruspex is intended to go after weaker squads that rely on wearing a monster down over several turns with buried special weapons or alternatively small squads with good armor/toughness but poor back-up saves and few return attacks. In particular, I think it would be quite good at killing other Monstrous Creatures since it wounds most of them on 3's (with rerolls if it has Toxin Sacs) and in theory it can keep regenerating away whatever damage gets through, especially given that most Monstrous Creatures only have 3-4 attacks and should only average 1-2 wounds a turn.

The only reason I got one was for the chance of needing another MC in Elites. Its just not that great of a unit, and it has a hard time with anything but blobs of weaker units. Wife and I playtested it against squishy things and steadily upped it. I think its most valuable asset is that it LOOKs like a threat and can sound like one on paper, so it can draw fire that doesnt have to go against MC's that I actually care about.

Looks cool though!

I think, as other people have mentioned, that its main benefit is being an MC in the elite slot. If you have extra HS slots, you probably shouldn't be taking a Hausperex. However, if you've used up your HS slots (especially if you've taken a unit of Biovores or two) and still want to fit in more MC's, he can be a good option, especially if you can afford adrenal glands and toxin sacs for him.

I think it's also one of those units that you really need to see on the board. His stats and abilities are pretty unique, and it's difficult to judge how effective he is (or isn't) on paper.

The model is very nice.

As for the rules there is some though compettition in the 'nid codex for good MC's. What does it do better then the others? Is it harder to kill?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Sometimes less attacks is better, you don't want to overkill those 10 fire warriors only to get gunned down by all thier mates.

I'd just go with 9 carnifexes with TL devourers and 2 minimum units of stealers
